Some emigrated to Perth County, Ontario, Canada, in the mid-1830s, while others may have come to Monroe County and/or the adjoining Belmont County. I've noticed that there are towns named "Clarington" in both Monroe County and the Durham District of Ontario, but that may be just an irrelevant coincidence. This article was published in the "Times-Leader," a Belmont County paper. http://www.focusonals.com/battlingals.htm I'd like to find out, if I'm related to this Leonard Brunner. Those who settled in Switzerland Township and Salem Township, Monroe County were predominately as you state. Born in the Canton of Bern, Alsace and across the Rhine in Germany. Most spoke German and were farmers or in agriculture related professions in small communities. It is a wonderful experience to visit those small towns. Most don't speak English once you leave Strasbourg, but they are so helpful. We visited two years ago and went to one of the government buildings that contained marriage, birth and death records. One lady spoke French and a little English, she called a gentleman who had the day off to come in because he spoke French but could read the German records and then there were us poor Americans that could only speak English. It was a WONDERFUL experience; don't believe the negatives you might hear about the French. They truly wanted to help us and they did. My mother's name was Mehl and there were Brunners that married family members. But I don't have info to help you determine your relationship. I find no Uriah Barnes in either 1850 or 1860 in Monroe County. In 1850, there is a Uriah Barnes living in Barnesville, Belmont County and that is just a few miles north of Monroe County. In 1860 & 1870 a Uriah Barnes and son Uriah living in Washington County which borders it to the west. Appears to be the same man; born in Ohio abt 1810 ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Andrew Givens and his son James Hineman Givens moved with their families from Wayne District in Monroe County, Ohio, to Union District in Pleasants County, West Virginia, circa 1872. Does anyone have information about the availability of ferries or riverboats to transport families and their household goods? My e-mail address is rgivens@ma.rr.com. Thank you. Their son, William HIldreth Wilson was born in Stafford, Monroe Co, Ohio on January 1, 1861 and married Millie Agness Hartshorn on December 12, 1883 in Monroe Co, Ohio. I believe Thomas and Sarah Wilson (of Virginia) to be his parents and I can find Thomas and his brother, William in Monroe Co, Ohio on the census back to 1840. I think that Thomas and William's father is William Wilson (b@1794-1802 in Maryland). Can anyone help me with information on this family?
