To identify the youngest three persons in Edward Nixon's 1870 household, I think that you have to go back to the 1860 census for Monroe County, Ohio, where, in Edward and Margaret Nixon's household, in addition to the 14-year-old Nancy, there is also a Catherine Myers, age 29. I surmise that this was Nancy's oldest sister, presumably Catherine Nixon Myers. She was first listed as a son, but "son" is stricken through with the letter D above it, presumably meaning daughter of Edward, the head of the household. Catherine must have married a Myers who died or otherwise disappeared prior to 1860. In 1870, Francis, age 15 (who was interestingly not present in the 1860 household) Myers appears, and William, now thirteen is listed. The 1900 census of Wetzel County, WVA, finds Nancy Sindeldecker as a boarder, along with her son Edward, age 16. The Cora, age 4, in Edward Nixon's 1870 household appears to me to have been mistakenly listed ! as a "Myers" in 1870, since Nancy Sindeldecker/Singledecker appears to be her mother based on the 1910 census. Cora's West Virginia death certificate (informant was her daughter, Alma Vanaman Swartz)lists her father as Edward Nixon and her mother as "No Record." I think Edward Nixon was Cora's grandfather, and that Nancy Nixon born 1846 was Cora's mother. The identity of her father I do not know, or whether she was born with benefit of clergy. Would love to hear more about Cora Bell Nixon Vanaman's ancestors from anyone who knows. I believe that based only upon census data, five of Nancy Nixon's total of seven children can be identified: Cora (b. 1866), Joseph (b. about 1872), Berthena (born about 1873, Perly (born about 1880) and Edward (b. about 1884. The other Sindeldecker children listed in the 1880 census (Rebecca, Delila and Daniel) must have been from an earlier marriage of Joseph Sindeldecker, as they were born before 1870. There is a Cora in listed in the household as age 4 which could be Nancy's daughter. Mary, that Margaret was born abt March 5, 1843 and died March 20, 1856 and is buried in the Hism Cemetery, Caldwell Township, Appanoose Co., Iowa. I am looking for the maiden name of William's sister-in-law, Rosannah who was born abt March 12, 1804 and died November 20, 1874 in Belmont Co. I can't find her in a cemetery and looked. She was married to Richard Monroe, born abt 1800 in Delaware (probably now PA) and died before March 5, 1850 in Belmont Co. She is the only one of that generation that I don't have a clue as to her last name. Curtis (my ancestor) I am sure was married to Phebe Slusher, but darned if I will ever be able to prove it. Just like I can't find Phebe Starkey's parents and I can't prove that my Archibald States' mother was Hannah Hanna and thus a Brady descendant, but everything points that way. I have been through so many records and nothing yet. Was really disappointed that the records I was using in that old restaurant in Belmont Co have been now hidden again by the Belmont Co people. I didn't get back there in the fall, but I am going to make a stink if I can't get to them later. Helen had them all fixed as to type and year and even tho I had to toss a lot of heavy books around to get to the oldest ones at least I knew where to start. If and when they moved them I am sure they didn't care and just piled them to the ceiling. Must run. we are taking the day off and going to see a movie - our twice a year I guess as there is never enough time. **************Start the year off right. Author: MilfordKirby Surnames: Sindeldecker, Singledecker, Nixon, Vanaman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.monroe/754.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think it is possible that your great (great?) grandmother Nancy J. Sindeldecker was also my wife's 3d great grandmother. I believe that she appears in the 1910 census for Belmont County, Ohio, Mead Township, sheet 16B, in the household of James Vanaman (may be indexed as "Venman") and wife Cora [Cora Bell Nixon Vanaman (1866-1952)]. Nancy is listed as Nancy "Singledecker" age 64, a widow, born in Ohio, who bore 7 children of whom 6 were surviving, and as the mother-in-law of James Venman/Vanaman. This shows that Nancy Singledecker/Sindeldecker was the mother of Cora Bell Nixon Vanaman. You will note that the information particularly on the number of children and surviving children is identical to that reported in the 1900 census for Wetzel County, WVA that you have referenced in your 2002 post below. I think that Nancy Sindeldecker was born in 1846, not 1851, as she is listed in the 1860 census of Monroe County, Ohio, in the household of Edward Nixon and wife Margaret,! as being age 14, and in the 1910 census as age 64. I think Edward Nixon (born about 1800 in Pennsylvania) and his wife Margaret were Nancy's parents. Do you know the names of Nancy Sindeldecker's other six children? I also wonder whether you know who the father of Nancy's daughter Cora, my wife's supposed ancestor, was? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
