Yes, the Toothman Funeral Home was first established by Willis Lawrence Toothman - a nephew of our Great Great Grandfather Alvis B Toothman. Willis was the some of Ellis Calvin Toothman and Ida Olive Cross. Willis handed down the business to son, William "Bill" Toothman, who I believe is still running it. His son, Wilson Toothman is also active in the business. Ellis' & Alvis' parents were Golden and Mary Clark Toothman and they are buried in the Jacobsburg Cemetery. As a side note. Ellis, Alvis and Ellis' young son Kinsey Lee Toothman were all killed in a car/train accident near Manington, WV in 1915. William Ernest Bumgardner was the son of Marion and Rebecka Easton Bumgardner. I don't have dates for these two. Marion was the brother of our 2nd Great Grandfather, John M Bumgardner (1818-1897) who married Mary Anna Scott (abt 1824-1910). I only have William's birth year - 1854. I have no information for Robert Palmer. The Toothman's are also related to us. Willis Toothman, the original founder of the funeral home, was a nephew of our 2nd Great Grandfather on the Toothman side. Has anyone ever heard of the first name of Theodate for a female? I have run into it for first time. Does anyone know if this first name would be more popular among certain religious groups - Quaker? Mennonite? Does anyone know what it means? Thanks. Nancy, I can send you some of the information via email attachments but can't send it to the whole group since it doesn't allow attachments. Also, check here: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ and look under patent searches for Ohio and your ancestor's name. Monroe County was created in the 1820s, so many of the land owners of the 1830's were actually the first owners of the land, having bought it from or been granted it by the federal government. I'm looking for a Thomas Hall who married Eliza Jane Bumgardner probably around 1912-1915. She was born 1892 and passed away in 1920 - shown as a widow at the time of her death. Which means, this Thomas Hall would have died before 1920. She was the daughter of John Wesley Bumgardner and Massie Dailey Sherman. She died in Martins Ferry, Belmont Co., OH. If I give any mis-information here, hopefully someone will correct me: If I remember correctly, when I was in Woodsfield in December, the clerk at the Recorder's office told me that deeds were hit or miss from 1836 to 1840 and non-existant before 1836 due to a fire at the courthouse (the earlier of 2 fires). Sometimes these earlier deeds were re-recorded much later. She told me to check two particular volumes, as she had found several in them, but I can't remember now which ones they were. In my case, I didn't find any I was looking for in those volumes. It is also possible that your ancestor lived there, but did not own land until the 1842 purchase. You may want to compare the land descriptions from when he sold the land to when he purchased it to see if they are the same land. Tax duplicates are available for 1818-1838 (as well as all the deeds/indexes) on microfilm. If you are not close to Monroe County, your best bet is probably to order the film from your local family history center. A listing of the Monroe film is available here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitydetails&subject=196526&subject_disp=Ohio%2C+Monroe&columns=*,0,0 I would assume that the tax records between 1838 and the time Ezra left in 1849 are available at the courthouse, but don't know that for sure. Can anyone confirm that? Chris Staats Danraydesc@aol.com wrote: My 2great grandfather, Ezra Camp Ray, was in Monroe Co from 1840 [according to the census] until 1849. My dad--in 1990--researched Monroe Co Land records, which show Ezra owning property in Monroe Co from 1842 to Apr 1846. Then he reappears in Washington Co, buying land there in Nov 1849. Does Monroe County have a buyer/seller index for land transactions for that period? [Maybe my dad missed one transaction?] Or perhaps a tax roll or voter roll that I could use to locate Him? {His wife, Alvira Selby Bloor, was from Belmont County.} **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Martha, as far as Sarah's death record, when you tried the math from the death to the birth CD info, did it come out right? When I tried it, it did. That and the Clarington location pretty much indicates it is your Sarah. betty -----Original Message----- From: ohmonroe-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohmonroe-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Nancy Albritton Sent: Sunday, February 17, 2008 11:33 AM To: ohmonroe@rootsweb.com Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] Re: [OHMONROE] Martha Buskirk White (or Wise) And thank YOU, Betty. Yes, I do think the 1870 finding is our Martha and I don't have a middle name for her, so it could have been Mary Martha. Martha herself wasn't German - born in Ohio, but you're right, so many people, not just Germans, used their middle name. I believe you've found my John/Elizabeth marriage. As for Sarah White death record - not sure what to think. My original source for Sarah, a grandson to Martha's brother, shows her as dying before 1870 - although, he could be wrong or I misinterpreted his data. I will keep this note. I do have that death record CD and missed it entirely. And no, I did not know that Sarah and Anna were twins. I don't have any Birth record CDs - but think I'd better get some! Poor Martha - she seems to just have disappeared into thin air. I thank you much for your time & effort in finding these records for me.
