    1. [OHMONROE-L] Schaub and Lemmon Families of Monroe County
    2. Nancy
    3. I'm hoping someone with lookup capabilities might provide some info on Dr Jacob G SCHAUB (physician) who appears to have resided most of his life in Monroe County. He married Elisabeth Missel in 1849 in Morgan Co and they next appear in Sardis. This was at least a second marriage for him. Children from earlier marriage(s) appear to be Margaret Ann (DENNIS), Mariah, Hannah (WINLAND), Christina (BARRACKMAN), Jacob pos married Sarah FOWLER, and Frederick who I believe is the Frederick Schaub who died at Andersonville Prison. There is another "daughter" Catharine who married Salathiel LEMMON and resided at Sardis until around the turn of the century. Birthdate was near time of Jacob's marriage to Elisabeth so not sure where she fits in. One of their children, Blanch married George TOWLE, a druggist at Sardis, around 1905. I am most interested in Dr SCHAUB and Elisabeth and in the LEMMONS. Info on Jacob's earlier marriage might help clarify things also. Thanks for any assistance any of you can provide. Nancy

    2. I'm trying to find a record of the marriage of Andrew H. BAKER and Nancy STEPHEN (could be listed as STEEN). Undocumented information suggests they were married in 1835, most likely in one of Ohio's southeastern counties. -- Anyone able to do a look-up of Ohio marriages?? -- Thanks Hal Baker Cary, NC

    3. Obituaries of Monroe Co.,Oh Carl Marshall Romick, youngest son of the late Edward & Nancy Romick, was born near Sardis, March 3, 1901. At the age of 48 years, 3 months and 23 days, he met his death Monday, June 27, at Youngstown, Ohio while working as a lineman for the Ohio Edison Company. He went to Youngstown 25 years ago and had been employed for the same company during that time. He was a member of the Western Star Masonic Lodge #21. Masonic services were held Tuesday evening at the Hofmeister Funeral home. Wednesday he was brought to the Rush Funeral home. On June 29, 1925 he was united in marriage to Anna Winters. He leaves his wife, also five brothers: Charles & Lawrence of Cleveland, George & Paul of Youngstown & Floyd of Sardis; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Bourne and Mrs Harry BAKER of Cleveland. A brother Ben and a sister Laura preceded him in death several years ago. Carl had many friends and he will long be remembered by his fellow employees. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Mt. Olive Church with Rev. Clyde Willis officiating. Burial was made in the church cemetery. March 17, 1926 Mention was made last week of the death of Merritt Baker, son of Clyde Baker, and a former resident of Woodsfield before moving to Peace Dale, Rhode Island. From a letter to Mr. & Mrs. William Schwall, we learn that Merritt was a foreman on a big pile-driving boat on which is a mast or derrick about 60 feet high. On the day he was killed, the crew was handling an extra large pile and the two men on the second platform were unable to pull it into position for receiving the first impact of the three-ton wieght that set it. Merritt went aloft to help put the pile in position and had started down the mast. When the engine started, a slack line stiffened suddenly and hit Merritt, knocking him against the mast. he lost his hold and fell about 30 feet to the deck of the boat, fracturing his skull at the base of the brain. His right arm and several ribs were broken and apparently he never knew what happened. The accident occured at 6:45 Friday evening and he passed away at 6 o'clock the next morning without regaining consciousness. June 35, 1942 George Baker, aged 81 years, died Tuesday morning at the home of his son, Harry, east of town, following a several months illness. Mr. Baker's death occurred on his 81st birthday anniversary. Short funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at the home of his son followed by final obsequies at 2:00 o'clock at Mt. Carrick church, Interment will be made in the church cemetery. As immediate relatives he is survived by his brother, M.W. "Doc" Baker and a sister, Mrs. Jere Jackson, both of Woodsfield. A more complete obituary will be published later. October 1, 1931 Mrs. Lucinda Baker, aged 71 years, died Friday morning of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.L. Hine, of near Woodsfield. She was stricken with paralysis about five weeks ago and gradually grew weaker thereafter. Mrs. Baker was born on September 1, 1859 and died on December 12, 1930 being 71 years, 3 months and 11 days of age. She spent practically all her life in the community where she died, loved and respected by all who knew her. Her husband, who was George F. Baker, died 1914 and since that time, she made her home with her son Alton who survives her as do two daughters, Mrs. George Christman, of Lewisville R.2 and Mrs. Hine above mentioned. She has also one brother and one sister living, Mrs. Sarah Jane Briggs, of Miamisburg, Ohio; and one brother, Madison Gray, of near Woodsfield. Mrs. Baker was a member of the M.P. Church at Moose Ridge for many years. Funeral services were held at the Hine home on Sunday afternoon, in charge of Rev. JF. Cash, of the Woodsfield M.E. Church. Interment was made in the family lot in Moose Ridge cemetery. Dec 17, 1930 While on a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Oci Baker in New Martinsville, Mrs. Ethel Rea, 85, of Clarington, died at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. Surviving are four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Baker, in whose home she died; Mrs. Fred Bruney, Clarington; Mrs. Robert Thay, Akron; Mrs Harry Goldblatt, Los Angeles; Jarrett Rea, New Martinsville; Robert Rea, Clarington; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Hogue Much evidence has been discovered that the Indians occupied our district to some extent. Many arrowheads have been found, especially near the natural cavern of the Dougherty, Pickens, and Charles Foraker farms. I have been told that a stone stove and stone hatchet were found in the Foraker Cave about fifty years ago. I am told that recently, while road workmen were excavating near this cave they discovered many arrowheads, one almost whole stone hatchet, another half one, and what they believe to be a stone scalping knife. I have not seen these articles as yet. They are in the possession of Homer BAKER and James Ward, two of the workmen. Mrs. BAKER told me today that they would display them at our program together with some interesting war relics which he has in his possession. However, I do not have the entire CLINE Family Tree on my data base. I do know that John was a favorite name of my branch of the CLINES. However, every John that I have a record of also shows someone else as their wife. I will keep your query and will do a lookup when I get some reference material back from a friend to whom I loaned it for two weeks. In the meantime, I did a quick query on http://www.usgenweb.org working my way through to Monroe County and I did discover that your inquiry for this info is not the only one going on. The only one that I didn't address was the Ice connection. The only Ice that I have any documentation on is my ggrandmother, Sarah Ann ICE b. about 1825, married Gideon CLINE about 1850. The only child of theirs that I have any information about is my grandmother Mary Ann CLINE who married Thomas A. DIXON. I have not explored the ICE connections as yet, so I can't really tell you anything about her family. As far as I know, I have no WILLIAMSONS or POWELLS in my family tree. However, as you have surely learned by now, the geneology ball game tends to throw a lot of curves - so who knows, we may be cousins and not know it. As far as the Halls in my research are concerned, there is only one thus far; M.J. (Mattie) Hall, who married my maternal ggrandfather James Owen Wakefield McElroy. They were married in Franklin, TN on 13 Jun 1876. I have no other information on her except that family tradition says she was a full blood Cherokee Indian that refused to be associated with the Indians (or enrolled in the rolls) because of the stigma attached. As much as I would like to say yes, unless you can tie in with one of these individuals, my response has to remain - I don't know. Have you checked out Joanne Barber's sites that were included in my response to her query yesterday? She also has several of these family names in her trees and the URLs are included in my response. What are the dates on your Samuel Newton Dixon? Where was he born? What are the dates on his parents and where are they from? I know quite a bit about my Samuel Dixon's descendants, but absolutely nothing about him except where and to whom he was married and the fact that he lived some years in Monroe County, OH because my grandfather, his son Thomas, was born there 7/6/1855 and lived there all his life. He was married to Delilah Figley on Jan. 1 (or 3), 1839, in Harrison County, OH. Family tradition says that Samuel was born about 1815, in Richmond, VA - whether Richmond the city or the County, I don't know. I am currently looking at land transfers in OH for that period of time. It looks like there was at least two Samuel Dixons living in OH at the same time. If you can give me any more information on your Samuel Newton Dixon, we might be able to clear up this mystery. I certainly hope you have more information on your ancestor than I have been able to find on mine. I have several Clines in my tree and have traced them all the way back to Northern Germany to George Cline Sr. who was born in Northern Germany in about 1740. His son, John Cline Jr. was the father of Gideon Cline. My paternal grandmother was Mary Ann Cline, daughter of Gideon Cline. John Cline, Jr. was married to Elvira McVay. That makes them my gggrandparents. Thus the two lines in my family tree. However, John and Elvira had 17 children and I don't have the descendants for all of them. 1. [OHMONROE-L] Andrew Dixon
    2. Regarding 82/7/99 posting on Andrew Dixon (Rev War). Shirley, I have an Andrew Dickson/Dixon but he had no daughter, Massie. He is the father of Scott Dickson from Monroe County. He was born in Ireland, lived in Pa., Jefferson and Monroe Counties in Ohio, then ended up in Ottawa Co. Kansas. These are probably different Andrews, but I'll keep my eye open for something on your line. Milton McWilliams

    1. [OHMONROE-L] Scott Dickson/Dixon from Ohio
    2. Regarding 2/6/99 post for Samuel and Scott Dickson. My gggrandfather, Alexander McWilliams served with Scott in the civil war. Alexander, Scott and Robert Armstrong, who I believe was a half brother to Scott, enlisted together in the 116th Ohio Vol. Inf. At the battle of Winchester in June of 1863, Robert was killed and Scott and Alex were captured. I understand that Scott died in captivity. Alex escaped and later returned to his unit. Scott's place of death was Georgia, he may have been at Andersonville but I have no documentation. After the war Alex returned to Monroe County and married Scott's sister, Harriet. They moved to Nevada Mo. and then about 1868 joined Scott's sister, Margaret in Sedgewick County Kansas. Margaret married Alexander Garrett and were among the first settlers in what is now Derby Kansas. In 1874 Alex and Harriet moved to Texas. The Dickson and McWilliams families were together in Jefferson County Oh. then went to Monroe on land grants in the 1830's. I have some research done by Margaret Garrett, granddaughter of Alexander and Margaret Garrett. I would like very much to exchange information with someone from the Dickson family. MIlton McWilliams
