Hello, My interest in Monroe Co OH is the FARRA family. I would like to find the burial site of a 4th gr grandfather, Reese FARRA. I also need his death date. He was married 26 Mar 1818 to Rachel BROOMHALL. Any other info on Reese and his family would be welcome. His parents were Samuel FARRA & Hester REESE. I need Samuel & Hester's death dates. Samuel was born 23 Mar 1747/48. They were married 2 Oct 1790. Where are they buried? I need Hester's birth date and her parents. Info may be in some Quaker records. Thank you. Irene ikrieger@seidata.com
Thanks for the speedy reply. Unfortunately, this is not the one I deleted. I think it was the first of the three you sent yesterday. The DAY/JEFFERS information was near the beginning. Date was 1804. Obituaries of Monroe Co., OH March 17, 1926 Clara Elizabeth NORRIS Jefferies, daughter of George G. and Mary E. Norris, first saw the light of day some three miles southeast of Woodsfield, Oh having been born July 14, 1866. She is of a family of nine children, four daughters and five sons. The father died about 15 yrs ago, also two of the girls and two boys preceded the subject of this sketch to the Realms Eternal. The mother now living inthe very shadows of the evening of life is still here as is one sister, Miss Anna S. Norris and three brothers: Charles T., Clement L., and George G. Norris, all of this community. Hence, the mother and four children are here and the father and five children are "at home over there". On April 8, 1888, Clara E. Norris was united in the bonds of wedlock to James L. JEFFRIES. Three children came to bless and brighten this home, all of whom with the husband and father are living. They are: Mrs. Vera Haney, of Adena, Oh; Ray of Martins Ferry, Oh; and Miss Elizabeth of the home. Something more than 25 yrs ago Mrs. Jeffries gave her heart and life to Jesus the Christ and was baptised by Ben J. Elston. From this time on, she has been a member of the Church of Christ, of Woodsfield. Our sister was in nature very reserved, even to the point of timidity, but at the same time was always kind and affable. She was one of those precious jewels that God calls a "keeper of home". She loved the House of God and she loved her home and family. She honored God in gracefully and faithfully discharging her duties in her four-fold relation of daughter, sister, wife & mother. After a long weary, bitter struggle with a disease that baffled the skill of physicians, our sister peacefully "crossed the bar," at her home on Eastern Ave, at 10:45 pm on Friday, March 12th. Had she lived until next July she would have been 60 yrs of age. Of the immediate family she leaves a mother, a sister, three brothers, a husband, a son, and two daughters, a son-in-law and on little grandson, Jimmy. The funeral services conducted from the Jeffries home were largely attended. The regular minister, H.H. Adamson, assisted by Elder T.Q. Martin, were in charge. There was a profusion of floral offerings. Teh body was laid away in Oaklawn Cemetery. Among those from a distance in attendance at the funeral are Mr & Mrs F. W. Schneider and daughter Miss Anna, and Mrs A.J. Eddy, of Barnesville; Mrs. E.L. Shepard and Mrs Morton Wilson, of Martins Ferry, O; James Norris, of Glen Robin, O; Laird Norris, of Salem, O; Mrs. W.H. Rankin, of Shadyside, O; Mrs. William Blowers, of Beallsville, O; Mrs. F.H. Hargraves, Mr & Mrs M.L. Dennis & Dr. J.A. Haney of Adena, O; Miss Martha Hardesty of St. Clairsville, O; and Mr & Mrs. Fred Stover of New Matamoras, O Oct 4, 1947 Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at the Bauer & Turner funeral home in Woodsfield for Henry Holtsclaw, prominent farmer of north of Woodsfield, who died at 7 am Friday following an extended illness. The services will be in charge of Rev. William Miller, pastor of the Woodsfield Methodist church, and burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery. Mr. Holtsclaw is survived by two daughters, Miss Mary Holtsclaw and Mrs. Thomas Miller, both of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Olive JEFFERS, Woodsfiled, Route 5; Mrs D.J. Yoss, Woodsfield; Mrs. E.E. Roth and Mrs. John Claugus, both of Woodsfield, Route 4; four brothers, George Canton ; James, Sardis Route 2; Fred, Belmont; and Willard, Woodsfield; one grand daughter, Janet Miller of the home. The body was removed to the late home Friday evening and will be returned to the funeral home Sunday for services. More to come
Hi everyone, I have been going through the microfilm for the 1860 Monroe Co OH census and have found what I believe to be a large number of families living in close proximity to each other who report being born in Switzerland (that is if my tired eyes aren't deceiving me--the handwriting on this census is very bad and light). I stumbled across a surname I wasn't expecting to find--SCHWAM--in this group of families from Switzerland living in the Hanibal Post Office area of Ohio Twp/Monroe Co. Is anyone else researching families of Swiss origin? Other surnames include: INGOLD, KERNON, SUTHY and SPRING. There may be more I haven't found yet. Thanks, Nancy <jpsnbs@erols.com>

Hello all, This one is about a virus that has not invaded my computer, but my body. I am spending most of my time in bed with a terrible cough, a raspy voice and a sore throat. All lookups are on hold for at least a week. And on March 12th my husband has surgery on his right knee. I will probably be up and typing by the end of the month. I have printed out your personal requests to me, and I will get to them just as soon as I am able. Sincerely, J.L. http://members.tripod.com/~FutureFoods/FutureFoods.html
Jennie Lee, here it is! Thanks so much for this post. There are several references here to William F. Hunter, son of my gggggmother, Mary Ann. Questions: Is there a way for me to get a copy of that will of his? Could the courthouse send me a copy of the entire thing if I pay them for the copying? Is there anyone else on this list who is descended from this man, William F. Hunter? He is not actually my ancestor, but his mother is, and I'm sure there must be a collection of his papers *somewhere* that would give more information about her. > Monroe Co., Oh Will Abstracts Book 1 & 2 > Book 1 > William F. Another great historical place to stay is at the old Well Inn in Sistersville WV. It is over 100 years old and just been renovated. They added an outdoor covered pool that is heated. They have a resteraunt and a bakery also. You would ride the car ferry across the beautiful Ohio river to Fly Ohio. From there you go straight up the hill Rt. 800 to Woodsfield. Takes about 45 minutes. Is a beautiful drive.
for those looking for info lost in the court house fires, try the Woodsfield library. They have a very nice genealogy section with lots of history. I found cemetery records there and was able to where my ancestors were buried. They have will books, census books, land records etc. Go early because it is a good place to "dig"
Hi Bonnie B. and all, Just wanted to keep you updated on our search for BOTT/ROGERS. Called the Monroe Co. Probate office and they couldn't find a death record for Frank, or James, or any ROGERS between the years 1891-1899. Seems he disappeared after he shot himself in the heart. With the technology of the 1890's we can't imagine that he would have lived. Also found out that even though 105 yrs. have gone by, adoption records still cannot be unsealed, if they exist. Can you imagine that?! Then I see in postings today that there have been fires that have destroyed records. Why hasn't anyone at the county offices told us this? It might explain why we can't seem to find anything. We are not sure at this point whether we're ever going to know the truth. Any other suggestions. Thanks a bunch. Pat Owens Can you imagine that!
