"Pappy" as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was a friend to all he came in contact with. From his childhood to his last hour he always manifested a sunny character. His last years were spent listening to his radio of which he got all the church services he was able to dial. His great ambition was to drink deeper from the fountain of God's love, so when his master called, "It is enough, come up higher," he could sing with the Angels his favorite hymns, "On Jordan's Stormy Banks," and "Home At Last." The events of his entire life can best be eulogized in these few words of the poet. He lived in the house by the side of the road, And was a friend of man. Then shill I reach that happy place And be forever blest, Then shall I see my Father's face And in His bosom rest. Minnie Marty Harrison, daughter of Randolph and Mary Kurtzman Marty, was born January 21, 1868, and passed away in the Wetzel Co., Hospital at New Martinsville, at 2:30 o'clock on Jun 8, 1940, at the age of 72y 4m & 17d. >When you say you store documents in "archival plastic sheets," do you mean >they are pH neutral or pH-negative to absorb acids? Are they porous? And >do you have them stored upright, or flat? Tightly or loosely packed? Thanks, all, for such a quick response. I think I knew the answer, but really appreciate your feedback. James, I'm just assuming that these "archival plastic sheets" (sleeves, really) are whatever pH necessary to keep the documents from deteriorating. I don't know whether they are pH-neutral or pH-negative, or porous, for that matter. Right now, I'm going back and forth between files and 3-ring binders for storage. And I haven't been particularly careful about them all, and I'm just beginning to realize how precious all this paper is, and how I really need to think carefully about preserving it. So, I will stop considering laminating, and will go to the Texas State Archives and Geneology Library, just a few blocks from where I work, and get some tips on preserving these wonderful old documents. Thanks, all!

Okay, I'll probably sound like a real geneology newbie here, but what opinion do y'all have on laminating documents? It seems to me it would stop the disintegration of the document, but would allow it to be handled. Currently, I am generally storing documents in the archival plastic sheets that can be stored in 3-ring binders. Any feedback? Thanks! Ruth Rinehart
Jeff, I have been going over your last posting and my notes on the Garretts. You are right, I don't think Alexander Garrett took Ella Piatt to Kansas, but I'm convinced she went with someone from this family. Some of these families were closely associated with each other before coming to Monroe County and stayed together when they migrated to Kansas. I would like to thank Laverne for posting the 1850 Monroe Co. census information on the Joseph Garrett, Andrew Dickson, and Thomas Ferrel families, this has been very helpful. It helps to refer to this list when going through these names. After the Civil War the Dickson and Garrett families moved to Kansas to an area just north of Salina in Ottawa County. I don't know the exact date they arrived, it was probably 1866 or 1867. While there a man named Perry Eaton was a guest of the Garretts and persuaded Alexander Garrett to move to land just south of present day Wichita. Alexander and his wife, Margaret Dickson, were the first settlers in what is now Derby Kansas, arriving there in March 1869. Eaton became a notable pioneer around Wichita Ks. If my memory serves me, his name was on a hotel in Wichita, this hotel had a bar which was the one Carrie Nation later chopped up with her axe. (just a bit of trivia) In 1966 one of the Dickson descendants was driving just east of Salina and came upon a cemetery with a large stone at the entrance marked "Joseph E. Garrett" Joseph and his wife were buried there. Next to this lot was a stone marked "Andrew Dickson, died 10-25-1869. After Andrew died Margaret Dickson moved to Derby, joining Alex and Margaret. They are all listed on the 1870 census for Sedgwick County Ks. and most are buried in the El Paso cemetery in Derby. I have a copy of some newspaper articles about the Garretts as early settlers in Kansas. There may have been other members of the Garrett family in this move and maybe they are the ones which settled near Topeka. Topeka is about 100 miles east of Salina. They would have had to pass thru Topeka on their way to Salina. As to Hannah Ferell-Dixon, she married Scott Dickson, son of Andrew and Margaret, in 1837. They had three children, Samuel, William and Minerva. Scott served with the 116th Ohio Vol. Infantry during the Civil War and died as a POW in Georgia, it may have been at Andersonville. Hannah later married William Piatt. As if things weren't confusing enough, I'll throw in some members of my own family. My gggrandmother was Harriet Dickson, sister of Scott and Margaret. She married Alexander McWilliams just after the Civil War. The McWilliams and Dicksons came to Monroe County from Jefferson Co. Ohio on land grants. Alexander and Scott served in the 116th OVI together. Alexander and Harriet first moved to Nevada Mo. but later joined the Garretts in Derby. I have some information on the Garretts and Dicksons from Derby which was given to me by Margaret Garrett, a granddaughtor of the Garretts. I hope there something here that is useful, I'll do some more research and pass on what I find. Milton McWilliams Omaha, NE

I just want everyone to know that I have the following sources and I am willing too do look-ups on info in these books:Abstracts and Extracts of the Legislative Acts and Resolutions of the State of Ohio: 1803-1821, Atlas of Noble County, Ohio 1876, Ohio Guide to Genealogical Resources and the Ohio Genealogical Guide, 6th edition. My interest with Monroe Co. is in the Robert, Thomas and Joseph Dodds families. Also the Rev. Alexander Bell and John D. Bell families who resided in Monroe Co., or alond the border in Grandview Twp., Washington Co. I am also interested in any info about the2nd WV Volunteer Cavalry from Monroe, Co. My G-G Grandfather Joseph Dodds was a member during the Civil War and it is my understanding that most men in that unit came from Monroe Co. I have already seen the book that was written about the Second but if anyone has any familiy stories about it I'd like to hear them. Sincerely, Lucy A. Starting a new thread here if no one minds... I've been pursuing The Tyner/Tiner/Tener family from 1840's Woodsfield area, Sunberry township with little to no luck. Often, the ancillary information you pick up turns up some good news and this has happened to me. I located another couple of Tiner's in nearby counties. More importantly, I found a town in West Virginia just below Monroe County called "Tyner" near Parkersburg in Wood County. My quesion to you all: In your studies of migration routes from the East have you identified the primary roads that were used? While Parkersburg is south of Monroe County it is the end of an old trade route used during the 1700's and the terminus of the first rail line to the Ohio River (If my memory serves me). However, some old maps have shown "roads" that appear to strike the river near present day New Martinsville WV. Is anyone aware of the principle routes into early 1800's Ohio out of Pa and WV? Do you know which paths your ancestors took to get to Monroe County? This information would be enormously helpful as I blindly try to retrace the hidden path of my ancestors from wherever they landed. I'm pretty certain that they came by way of either Philadelphia or most likely, the Richmond VA. area where nearly all with my surname seem to have origins, namely progenitor Nicholas Tiner who landed at Isle of Wight County, Va in the 1670's. This might be my first or second posting..... Anyone know of a printed list for cemeteries in this township? I am researching DISTLER, YOUNG/JUNG, BOTT/BUTT, FEIOCK and STOFFEL in and around Lewisville. These were mainly 1840 Lutheran settlers from the Pfalz (part of Bavaria at this time) between Pirmasens and Bad Bergzabern, Germany. My website below has alot of info on these families, but I need some more! Dave Distler Ohio River Valley Families http://orvf.com p.s. Hate to read email with a lot of anger in them. Enjoy being on Monroe Co., list. Maybe we can all step back, take 3 deep breaths and get back to "digging" into the past, especially Monroe Co, where records were lost and we all need a little extra help.
