This is a personal pet peeve of mine and I'm prepared for the flames that'll come back on this one. But consider for a moment one bit of really basic logic in this fiasco: The same organizations (FTM, et al....) that want these copyright laws enforced, are the same organizations that have been begging for your hard work and research, often referring to as " your contribution." They take your "contribution" and copyright it. Then they manufacture the CDs, publish the books and sell it. Is it me or does this seem wrong? I guess that little dialog box that pops up and says "Thanks for your contribution" is payment enough... In reality, the companies demand enforcement of the copyright law means so that no one will do look-ups, the exchange of information on the Internet dries up (including non-copyrighted info for fear of harassment and backlash), and people will have to buy the CDs and books to get any information at all. I'm not even going to go into the veracity of the information contained on the CDs and in the Books. Marketing Terrorism today is considered a Good Market Strategy. Just so I'm not accused of being off topic, I've written an article on the Hines/Jeffers/McMahon/Norris family. The Hines family includes the immigrant Baltzar Hines. Per the 1880 Census, Baltzar Hines was a Blacksmith from Woodsfield, Monroe Co., Ohio. If anyone would like an article on the rather complex family relationship that ensued, please let me know and I will forward it in a format suitable to your desire (Word, Text, WP, etc...) Regards, R. Jeffers A one-time "contributor" to FTM... My mistake and I do apologize. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Sandra Ferguson" <ferg@wvinter.net> To: OHMONROE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [OHMONROE-L] Fw: copyright Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 08:38:27 -0400 >T he "previous message" referred to below was a comment on copyright laws, and said that it is legal to give another person a lookup of one or 2 names, from a copyrighted book that you own, but what is called a "blanket lookup", (all information on a certain name, or large passages from a specific book) is an infringement of this law. Regina in Arvada, My condolences on the recent loss of your grandmother Ida Jones Wittekind. The date of her death as posted must be incorrect, though. Could you repost it? There is more than one Cline/Piatt marriage in Monroe Co, but one that might be of the right time period for Ida's grandparents is Daniel W CLINE to Elizabeth PIATT 11 Jun 1870 (Monroe Co Marriage Book 1, page 258) Elizabeth is thought to be the daughter of James Piatt and Sarah Mott. Listers, Is there any way to contact author Wes Cochran in Parkersburg other than snail mail? Thanks. Laverne Ingram Piatt Ontario, OH
Thanks! for catching the date of my grandmother's death. Ida Jones Wittekind b. 3/20/1906 d. 12/12/1998. Daughter of Harvey Jones b. 11/03/1867 d. 1/22/1927 and Hattie Cline b. 6/29/1881 d/ 9/22/1951 Hattie's mother was Elizabeth Piatt Cline. Do you know if Elizabeth had a sister named Ida? I remember my grandmother telling me she was named after her grandmother's sister but I am not sure if it was on the Jones line or Cline line. Thanks! Regina
Hello, I'm new to this list, is it normally pretty active? Let's see if I can provide something to chew on... I am a WV Pyatt, but I am told that Monroe County, OH is really the family "home" . I'm stuck on John S. Piatt, born in Nicholas County, (W)V 1840 who married Mary (Margaret Catherine ?) Smith in 1864 in Mason County. I think his Parents were William and Mary, but dont have anything solid on them. Anyone else doing this line? Also working these names in the Monroe County general area: Gorrell, Eveland, Grannon, Whetstone, Throckmorton, Hutchison, James, Watkins and Magee. Let me know if any of you are interested in sharing info on these families. Thanks, Robin
I, too, have been wondering what happened. Maybe we were all too busy with Easter? Shirley
Hello! I am also new to this site. But I hope to find out some answers to my family tree. My grandmother was Ida Jones Wittekind, who just passed away 12/12/99. Her parents - Harvey Jones and Hattie Cline. I am trying to find out who Harvey's parents were. I know that Hattie's mother was a Piatt. But I do not know there names. I would appreciate any information. Regina from Arvada, Colorado.
I have not been recieving any mail this last three days ( April 2-5 ) Is something wrong or did I get bumped off thanks? Lorraine

J.L. In your 3/26/99 posting you asked for information on the siblings of Scott Dickson, son of Andrew and Margaret whose children on the Monroe Co. 1850 census were: William age 21 David age 18 Rebecca age 18 Scott age 14 Harriet age 12 Margaret age 9 William born 1828 in Pa, died 1912 and buried in Bennington Ks. His first wife, name unk. died in childbirth in Ohio. Had a son, Albert. His second wife was Elizabeth Gilmore Huffman (widow). Their children were: 1. Sam. Married Emma Rhinehardt. Children were Roy, Ralph, and Vera. 2. Belle. (Sam and Belle were twins) Married Eric Olson. Children Walter, Gilbert, Florence and Chester. 3. Sade. Married Edd Brady. One child, Julia. Rebecca was born October 4, 1832 in Pa. Died March 20, 1904 in Derby Ks. and is buried in the Garrett cemetery plot. She married a man named Williams, no other information. David, Rebecca's twin was born October 4, 1832, no other information. Scott, born 1835 in Pa, died as a Prisoner of War at Millen Ga. November 8, 1864. He married Hannah J Ferrell on June 24, 1858. Their children were: 1. Samuel N. born May 12, 1859 (my notes show a son, Scott but I have no other family information. 2. William Allen, born May 30, 1861 (poisoned in 1900) 3. Minerva J. born February 17, 1863. Married Chris Lallathin with children John, Herman, Amos, Miles (adopted daughter Lizzie) John was killed in Chicago in 1932, Amos died 1936, and Herman, as of 1966 was married, four children and was living in Woodsfield, Monroe Co. Oh. Pension application information by Hannah Dickson show Scott wounded at Battle of Piedmont, Va. and was left in hospital at Stauton Va. where he was captured. A certificate of marriage from Monroe Co. show Hannah married William Piatt on March 17, 1866. Harriet, born 1838, married Alexander McWilliams in Monroe Co. around 1866, they moved to Nevada Mo. then joined Alexander and Margaret Garrett in Derby Ks. in 1868. They had two children, Robert Oliver, and Lester. In 1872 Alex and Harriet moved to Texas. They later separated and Harriet moved back to Derby. Margaret, born 1843, died 1917 and is buried in the El Paso Cemetery, Derby Ks. Married Alexander Garrett and had two children, Anna and Herman. Anna married Sanford Burnell and their children were Myrtle, Margaret, Lawrence, and Mary. Herman married Mary Etta Rogers and had one child, Margaret Lucy. All the information I have given here comes from Margaret Lucy Garrett. Her family stayed in the Derby Ks. area. When Andrew Dickson died, Margaret Orr Dickson moved to Derby and stayed with her daughter. She brought many of the family letters with her and it is from these that her granddaughter started researching the family history. Some of these dated back to Monroe Co.Ohio and the Civil War. In a letter to my grandfather, Margaret Lucy Garrett said the grandchildren of Scott Dickson had written many of the letters to her grandmother from 1900 to 1914. Margaret Lucy has since passed away and I don't know what happened to her research and records, she was unmarried and had no children. I'll see if I can find anything on Margaret's next of kin, some may still be the Derby area. Also there may still be some of Herman Dickson's family in Woodsfield. Hope this will help, I will pass on anything else I can find. Milton McWillliams Omaha, NE
Can anyone help with my gr gr gr grandfather Alexander Cline? He was born in Monroe County possibly Washington Twp. abt 1829-1830. Even with all the other Clines in Monroe County, I have not found a connection to any family. He left Monroe County with his three children after his wife died. Their youngest son Thomas was born 7/6/1855 in Va., but they are in the Census in OH in 1850 and 1860. By 1870, Delilah was with her brother Robert Figley and his wife Canzada Woodyard Figley in Scipio Twp., Meigs Co. and Thomas was with the Clines in Monroe Co. By 1880, Delilah and her brother's family were gone. My questions still are: 1. Where was Samuel born in VA? 2. Who were his parents? 3. What happened to him between 1860 and 1870? 4. Where is he buried? 5. What happened to Delilah after 1870? 6. Where did her brother's family go and did she go with them? I know that part of the Figley family went to KS because I found a record of a Canzada Figley graduating from High School in Miami County KS in the early part of this century. Probably a grandaughter of Robert and Canzada's. Too unusual a name to be in common use. In 1859 Scott Dixon m to Hannah Jane Ferrell there children were: Samuel Newton "Newt" William Minerva "Sis" Samuel married to a lady named Ella Stephens but it seems Ella Stephens was the lady's adopted name. Her real name could have been Nancy Ellen Baker. Her adopted parents were Marion & Rachel Stephens. On death certificates of her children sometimes the name of the mother given is Nancy Ellen Baker and sometimes it is Ella Stephens (She and Newt had 7 children) Their daughter, Bessie Jane Dixon, b November 1890, was my great grandmother. I would like to discover where her adopted parents lived and died - quite probably in Monroe Co. Also, could someone advise me on how to proceed to discover her birth parents? Thank you, Sincerely, J.L.
