I was interested to see your query. My Burkey line came from Switzerland Twp, Monroe Co. also goes back to Canton Berne, Switzerland. The name was originally Burki. Does someone know the history of the Swiss migration to Monroe Co? I heard that a small group came directly from Switzerland and then others followed. I read that many were Anabaptists escaping persecution. I would love the hear from others. Gail
I saw your note concerning the disappearance of various family members and to where they may have moved. My own lines (Lemley, Burkey, Cain, Riley, ) went to eastern Washington (Whitman Co.) in the late 1800's. They heard about the excellent wheat farming area and one family after another went there. I also noticed Babbs living near my greatgrandfather's farm. I saw that someone had posted that name in Monroe or Belmont Cos. Gail

Alright, I have more information on her family. If anyone can help me with this one, let me know: Maude Eulah Tisher b. 23 March 1894 in Ohio township, Hannibal, OH d. 12 June 1969 in Wheeling, WV I do not know her parents' names, but I do know that her mother was a HOWELL. She was raised by her aunt, Anna Howell and, when she became 17 or 18, married a FOX. They had 2 children, Elizabeth and Charles. Now then, her aunt was Anna Howell. I have more information on this family: Jacob Howell b. abt. 1843 d. abt. 1875 in Hannibal, OH md. Matilda Henthorn b. 11 Nov 1838 d. 1905 in Hannibal, OH (Matilda was a daughter of Dr. Nimrod and Nancy Durkee Henthorn) Their children: (1) James Howell b. abt. 1864 (2) Anna M. b. March 1866 (3) Nimrod b. March 1868 (4) William b. March 1870 (5) John b. April 1872 (6) Edith b. abt. 1874 (7) Jane b. abt. 1877 I suspect that Eulah's mother was either Jane or Edith. I have no idea who her father was. If anyone can help me with this family, please let me know. Eulah lived with Anna Howell, her aunt, from at least 6 years of age through age 16 (1900 census & 1910 census). Thank you, Rob Martindale
Sometime after 1854 my gr. grandfather disappeared. Without a trace. Along with him we lost track of most of his family. His name was Samuel Dixon, bn. about 1814 in VA. Samuel Dixon md. Delilah Figley 3 Jan 1839 in Harrison Co, OH. They had the following children Albert, Joseph. William, Elizabeth , Adam, John, Samuel and Thomas bn. 7/6/1854. All of their children were apparently born in OH with the possible exception of Albert and Thomas. Albert is reported in the 1850 Census as born in VA. (Is it now WV?) Where? Who knows? I don't and have found no record of a Samuel that even looked promising from Va. Since he so mysteriously disappeared about the time of his youngest son's birth - also reported as happening in VA, I have wondered about epidemics in the area during that time frame. Is there a record (other than the one listed at: Epidemics or http://people.delphi.com/pamyates/epidemic.htm ) that specifically lists the epidemics of Monroe, Harrison, Meigs and Washington Cos. during this time frame? Since we have been unable to find a grave, or other record for him after his son's birth, this seems possible or even likely. We have the 1850 Census records of him and his family, but can find nothing in 1860. By 1870, his wife was living with her brother Robert Figley and his wife Canzayda Woodyard Figley in Meigs Co. His youngest son (at 16) was living with the Clines in Monroe Co. After the 1870 Census, even the Figley family disappears along with Delilah. However we have traced some of that family to the OK/MO area in later years - but no trace of Samuel. If you have any ideas or suggestions, Please, please help! We are desparate for some kind of information that will help us to break down this obstinate brick wall. Dear List Members, Would anyone know where I might locate an unpublished copy of the Cowen genealogy by Louise Dana ( Cowen ) Breckenridge. The family story pertained to the community of St. Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio. Louise, prior to her death, lived in Montrose, Baldwin County, Alabama. The family came to Ohio via MA first and NY second. Your suggestions, advise, assistance will be appreciated and I remain, Respectfully, Chester H. Hi! I have copies of the Civil War pension file for the brother of my g-g-grandmother. In one paper, he lists that he was a resident of Monroe County from approximately 1867 until 1877. I would like to locate him in the census during this time, but I understand that there is no census index for the whole state of Ohio for 1870, although some counties were indexed separately, not all of them were. I wondered if Monroe might be one of those counties? I have no idea of what town or township he might have lived in and I hate the thought that I may have to go page by page thru the whole microfilm. Does anyone know if this index is available? I plan to be in Ohio soon, for business and to visit relatives, so if I find there is an index, I may be able to look it up myself. I would just like to know whether what I need even exists. Thank you! -- Cherie Atkinson Clark chersfmly@aol.com http://members.aol.com/chersfmly/ Looking for ATKINSON in Ohio Co.
