Dear Jerilyn, In your recent posting to the Monroe County List you mentioned a Martha Closson Hensel in Washington County. I am looking for John Hensel and wife Ann Margaret who lived in Washington/Monroe County. He was born about 1780. They had children John, Katherine, Ann Mary, Margaret, Sarah, Samuel, and Nathaniel. Do you know anything of this family? Can anyone else who may be reading this message help me? Here is all I have. John Hensel, born about 1773 in Virginia and died June 24, 1848 in Monroe Co., Ohio. He married Ann Margaret ?. She was born about 1777 and died June 2, 1855 in Monroe Co., Ohio They had a son Samuel Hensel, born March 18, 1810 in Virginia and died December 1884 in Monroe Co., Ohio. He was married to Rue Ann Keck. She was born January 16, 1816 in Pennsylvania and died September 1, 1877 in Washington Co., Ohio. In the 1880 census, Samuel had a granddaughter, Rue Sellers, age 16 keeping house for him. He was a farmer. Samuel and Rue had John F. Hensel, born May 1834 in Ohio. John F. Hensell married Martha Closson States May 15, 1856 in Monroe Co., Ohio, the daughter of Archibald States and Sarah Brewer. John then married Mary Jane Campbell on February 26, 1874 in Washington Co., Ohio. She was born about 1851 in Virginia. John was a stone mason Seemingly, Martha died without having any children - probably in childbirth. Children by John and Mary Campbell are Samuel T. Hensell, born about 1875, Cora J. Hensell, born about 1877 and Zyeruha D. Hensell, born about 1879. There might have been more, but that is all that are listed in 1880 Washington Co., Census and this is not my line so haven't pursued it. I just always put in parents and grandparents when I find them as you never know when they might show up as the ones you need in another line. Hope this helps a little. Jerilyn jlktrees@aol.com
Mr. Whil - Your message to Barry Sherry in Virginia was forwarded to me a week ago. I am a direct descendant of Daniel Brewer States and have been tracing both the States and the Descendants of Amos and Miriam Davis Smith for about 45 years with many breaks in between to raise a family help my husband start a business etc. During this time my mother has kept a constant vigil on the family with letters and research of her own. I have a lot of information on your family. We are presently putting everything we have into a book(?) I don't know what to call it as it will not be published professionally - at least not at this time. We are putting together all we have gathered as far as wills, deeds, pictures and information and will probably print it myself, but is to be finished by next August in time for the family reunion. I would love to include what information you have on your family in the book. We will be selling it only for cost of printing - no profit - as has been a hobby and a labor of love. I want to put copies of it in Wayne Co., Illinois, Monroe Co.,, Ohio, Bucks Co., Pa genealogical or historical libraries so others can use it. I am willing to share what we have at this time. The reason Barry Sherry doesn't have all my info yet is that I am still experimenting with sending FTM over the Internet and haven't had time to follow his latest instructions. Please contact me so I can see where you fit in the scheme of the family. Daniel Brewer States married Sarah D. Smith, brother of Jonathan, in case you don't have that yet. Jerilyn in Illinois
Brenda- I took some information off your Allshouse Family Web and see that you have a Sarah States marrying Albert Frantz and then a Minerva Allen States marrying Cloy Anthony Frantz. Do you know who the parents of these two States girls were? Are they from the States family in Indiana Co. Pennsylvania or perhaps descendants of Mathias States of Westmoreland Co., Pat? I have a large States data base of Archibald States descendants of Monroe Co., Ohio that goes back to the Pennsylvania States. Would be interested in seeing if there is a connection. Thanks, Jerilyn jlktrees@aol.com
Joan Sorry, it has taken me so long to get back to you. My daughter was pregnant and having trouble and now has the new girl and all is well and that with all the other things we do in life caused a big pile up in answers. Michael I am interested in the descendants of William Henderson, born about 1813 in Pennsylvania, who married in Belmont Co., Ohio to Mary Monroe (1821-1882). They moved to Appanoose Co., Iowa about 1850. Would like also to know who William Hendershot belonged to. Does this fit in with any of your information.? Sorry about the delay, but daughter and new baby got me behind. Jerilyn jlktrees@aol.com
I cant help you with that, but I do have the Cemetary Book for Ohio and Lee Twp., and while there are Schaub ... no Catherine. This is probably trivia to end all trivia but never hurts to ask! I have a Monroe Gazette Obituary for Catharine Schaub dated 28 Jan 1892. It states that services were conducted by Rev R W Martin. I assume that Catharine is buried at Sardis but have been unable to confirm this so am thinking I might find something if I can find out what church the Rev Martin was associated with. Anyone know or have a guess? Thanks, Nancy
Meg, Thanks I will write her today. Robert Lappin (1769-1862) married Elizabeth Kirk(1770-1834) (daughter of Joseph Kirk and Judith Knight), a Quaker in Nottingham Meeting House, and for some reason the Quaker's were not happy with the marriage. Another Lappin also married a Quaker and had the same problem. Then one of his daughters married a Quaker and they wouldn't even give her a last name in the records. Don't know what happened. He and his family moved to Belmont County Ohio around 1815. Elizabeth died there and he died many years later in Morgan Co., Ohio where he was living with a daughter, Rachel Todd. If he was in trouble, he probably owed money. They family, at least the ones I have traced, have gone on to be upstanding citizens and known for keeping their word and paying their debts. We have been told conflicting stories of his past. One granddaughter of his said that he was born at sea and sang German songs with an Irish brogue. One note says his mother was a McMullen from Ireland. Another says that his father was Paul Lappin who was in the Revolutionary War - although I think barely as not much about him. If his father was Paul, then he couldn't have been born at sea. Another said he went to Ohio first and family came later and when they arrived he was covered with hair and living in a hut as it was such a wilderness. There were quite a lot of people in Ohio at that time, so don't know if this could be true either. Believe he was a brother of Samuel Lappin who went to Tuscarawas County as they all used the same names back and forth, but can't pin that down either. Only thing we are pretty sure of is that Lappin came from France and were Huguenots who fled to Ireland. There are lots of Lappins in Ireland. It means rabbit in French and one who has big feet in Russian. The ones in Russia were Jews. The family has always been Methodist or First Christian as far as we can find, except for the children who married into the Quaker faith. Just a little more information on this family. Children were Ruth (Wadsworth), Mary (Ogden Gray), Alice (Daniel Montgomery), Ann (John Starbuck), Knight (Martha Morris), Robinson (Phoebe Starkey), Rachel (William Todd), Judith (Joseph Fisher) and Samuel (Eliza Patton). Ruth Wadsworth - have no idea where she went, although may have later married a Kirby Mary Gray- went to northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin - can't find yet Alice Montgomery-went to Wayne Co., and have some on this family Ann Starbuck - stayed in Belmont Co., Ohio and have some early information on family but not much Knight - went to Illinois. Have quite a bit on family. His descendants became well-known preachers. Robinson - my line, have a lot on it. Have a few holes, but pretty complete Rachel Todd - Choquill family traced this line very well several years ago Judith Fisher - last known in 1850 in Vinton County, Ohio Samuel - went to Iowa and have no connections with any descendants. Thanks again, Jerilyn
OK Ken - I finally figured this out several weeks ago. It is muddy water. James Morton Dye (son of John and Mary Hixon Dye) born 3-17-1782 Fairfax Co., Virginia died 3-25-1827 Jackson Township, Monroe Co., Ohio (Unity Cemetery, Perry Township wed abt 1800 in Fairfax Co., Virginia Elizabeth Dye(daughter of Daniel and Abigail Hutcherson Dye Sr.) born 7-18-1782 Prince William Co., Virginia died 3-19-1856 Perry Township, Monroe Co., Ohio(Unity Cemetery, Perry Township Children were George W., John R., Daniel, Mary, Sarah, James, Nancy, Francis, Susanna, Abigail, Elam, Elizabeth and Amelia. John R. Dye(son of James Morton and Elizabeth Dye Dye) born abt 1803 Alexandria, Virginia died 9-21-1844 Monroe Co., Ohio wed 9-3-1826 Monroe Co. Ohio Ary Ridgeway (daughter of Benjamin and Mary Ann Riggs Ridgeway) born 11-13-1804 Ohio died 2-15-1890 Monroe Co., Ohio Children were Bazel Riggs, Isaac, Benjamin, Joshua, Amos, Elam and Mahlon Benjamin Ridgeway - no dates(probably Unity Cemetery but no stones) Mary Ann Riggs 1771-1855 Mahlon and Sarah Elizabeth States Dye's daughter Alice is what I found in the census. She was 1 year old in 1860. That is all I know. I found no marriage for her in Belmont, Monroe or Washington Co., Ohio. I think they left the county, but haven't traced them yet. Too much else to do. All of the information on the above families came from Eleanor Phillips a descendant of the James and Elizabeth Dye line. Also what I could find in the Fedorchak and various county published genealogy books. Next little muddy water. Henry B. States(son of Archibald and Sarah Brewer States) born 12-25-1825 Westmoreland Co., PA died 9-15-1859 Monroe Co., Ohio(buried Drum Cemetery, Wayne Township, Monroe Co., Ohio) wed January 2, 1847 Monroe Co., Ohio Mary Margaret Drum (daughter of Jacob and Sarah Noffsinger Drum) born 1-2-1831 Ohio died 4-9-1882 Jericho, Benton Township, Monroe Co., Ohio (buried Jericho cemetery) Henry and Mary Margaret States had Francis (abt 1848), Sarah Elizabeth (abt 1850), Mary Ellen (abt 1854) and Archibald (June 1857). After Henry's death, Mary Margaret Drum States married abt 1860 Samuel Hamilton Cline born 8-5-1819 Benton Township, Monroe Co., Ohio died 8-6-1905 Benton Township, Monroe Co., Ohio (Jericho Cemetery) Samuel and Mary Margaret Drum States Cline had the following children: Samuel, James Hamilton, Louisa May, Charles Fegan and Christian Sanders. Now before Samuel married Mary Margaret Drum States, he was married to Mary Katherine States (daughter of Archibald and Sarah Brewer States) born 4-15-1833 Westmoreland Co. PA died 9-19-1859 Monroe Co., Ohio(buried Jericho Cemetery) Samuel and Mary Katherine Cline had one child Archibald, born 1858 and died 3-25-1859. As you can see, Samuel married sister-in-laws. It really had me going for a while, but answered questions and at least I didn't have to trace the Mary Katherine line anymore. In our family records it is spelled Mary Catherine States. I am sourcing what I can with the books, films, etc. but a lot of the history I have was given to me out of Bibles up to 45 years ago and old letters. My mother, when she was helping me get things straight while I raised a family, very carefully copied the letters and I am afraid destroyed some. She is a perfectionist and I am sure checked and rechecked the information. They were all from family members who took the time to check with other of their relatives and get the information back to me. Today, I give a family a list I need filled out to get me up to date and I never see it again. Enough for now. Anything you have bringing any of these families down to the present would be appreciated as I tend to bring all my grandparents children as far forward as I can. We also have kept tract of parents, grandparents, etc. as far as we could go so that the information would never be lost. Jerilyn PS If anyone reading this sees any errors or can add to the information, please feel free to contact me.
As near as I can figure, my great-grandfather William McNiece died in Monroe County between 1908 (when records at the courthouse end) and 1913 (when the Ohio Death Index begins). I need his date of death so that I can then try to find his will, which purportedly was contested by his widow, the result being that most of the estate was devoured by attorneys. William had amassed his wealth during the oil boom around the turn of the century and owned subsurface mineral rights. Apparently he also, within three years of his marriage, had an out-of-wedlock child by another woman. Perhaps his wife chal- lenged the will because it made provision for this daughter? He had nine other children, for whom I have names and birthdates for only six. I'm hoping the will will help with this, too. Can anyone tell me how to access the death records for 1908-13? Betsy French
I hate to be a disappointment to you, but number one I don't know much about Tuel either. Hear that Lucy went by Dicey. We weren't even sure she was a Tuel, but have heard from others that she is, but they also are having trouble. I have to find the address of a woman doing Tuel research. What do you have going back on this family? The children I have for David and Lucy Tuel Dye are as follows: Jesse; Abigail (born about 1808) married Samuel Swartwood; Matilda married Levi Headley William (born 1807) married Maria Mitchell David (abt 1812) married Elizabeth. I do not have all my Dye information in the computer at this time, so know I have more and haven't sourced it yet either, but will in the future. Reuben was a son of Daniel Sr. and Abigail Hutcherson, a brother of David Dye. He was married to Mary (Polly) Tuel April 7, 1811 in Washington Co., Ohio. They had 3 girls and that is all I know at this time about this family. Will share what I have, but need to enter it in yet. Jerilyn
See you listed Huffman in the Tuscarawas Co., Roll Call. I am trying to locate any descendants of Margarette States, born 1831, who married Levi Huffman, born around 1829. They were living in Washington Co., Ohio in 1870. Children included Isadore, Lafayette, John, Dawson, Robert, William and Edward. Margarette was the daughter of Archibald and Sarah Brewer States of Monroe Co., Ohio. Any help would be appreciated. Jerilyn Lappin Koskan
My Davis is really found in Bucks Co., PA. A. Davis and Rachel Green are listed as the parents of Miriam Davis, born 1803. Miriam married Amos Smith and moved with their family to Monroe Co., Ohio. Don't know if any connection with any other Davis in the area. My Dye is William Dye (1807-1880) and Marie Mitchell (1809-1876), married in Monroe Co., Ohio and moved to Wayne Co., Illinois. They supposedly had 11 children but we have only been able to find 4 and they all went to Illinois. Believe some might be still in Ohio. William was the son of David and Lucy Tuel Dye. David, the son of Daniel Dye Sr. Another Dye is Mahlon Dye who married Sarah E. States, Feb. 13, 1868. They had one daughter, Alice, and have lost track of them. Trying to finish the descendants of the Archibald States family as well as the William Dye family. Hendershot - William Hendershot, born around 1813 in Pennsylvania married Mary Monroe, daughter of Nicholas Monroe of Belmont Co., Ohio. This family went to Appanoose Co., Ohio. A brother of Mary, John, married Matilda Lambert and lived and raised their family in Washington Co., OH. I also am hunting this family. Don't know if there is any connection, but always willing to help and share. Jerilyn
I am searching for William Johnston and Margaret Hickman who raised their family in Monroe County. Both were born in the early 1820's. They had 10 or 11 children born in Guernsey, Noble, Belmont and Monroe County. He was from either Pa or Oh and she was from Pa. Can anyone help? Mary Flegel
Looking for Truex, Asa (39-45?)OH wife Susan Bowman (45) MD children: Mary E. (abt.9) Rachel M (abt 7) William (abt. 4) possibly infant Alfred J. I found all of these in the 1880 census Salem Twp trying to go back 10 more years. This information would have been their approx ages listed in the 1870 census. This family could not read or write very well so assuming the ages might be somewhat different. Thanks in advance for any help or direction. If salem twp was not established then, what twp would it have been in? Thanks again Donna from WV
I am down from Daniel Dye Sr., born 1747 in Middlesex Co., New Jersey. We eventually end up at Hans Laurens Duyts. Do you have any of that information? Jerilyn jlktrees@aol.com
