I am in the midst of recarpeting our basement, which is our major computer space as well as my genealogy room. As those of you who have been doing this research for a few years know, moving everything you have collected on your families is no easy job and after filling half a double garage I am down to the final 4 file cabinets and my computers. My husband and daughters are moved out. Carpet is to be laid on Friday so give me a week to get back to answering queries. I will be set up in another area to check mail, but all files are piled high in boxes. This is the result of a flooded basement last November and we are now pretty sure that all leakage problems are fixed so can recarpet before all the children and grandchildren come home for Christmas. I do not ever want to have to move all these files and books again. Have a lovely Thanksgiving and don't eat too much. Jerilyn

He purched as much as 120 acres in the ohio river valley. Wifes name is unknown. Children were Nicholas Hubacher Jr, Frank, George, William, Lucy, Delia, Katy and my G grandmother Elizabth Hubacher Kirk. These Hubachers would eventually settle in Jo Davies County, Galena Illinois. Nicholas Hubacher Sr was in the Civil War. Company A, 15th Vol. Ill infantry. His son Nicholas Jr was in the Spanish American War Company M 6th regiment. Both are burried at Greenwood Cemetary West Galena Township. Elizabeths husband James Kirk Sr. was killed by a train at age 28 while working for the Northwestern Railroad in Chicago Ill. Nicholas went to Chicago to bring the remains home to Galena and to attend the coroners inquest. Feb. 1904. Three days after the death my Grandfather was born to poor Elizabeth who was so upset by the death of her husband she was thrown into labor. James had a huge funeral in Galena which was attended by friends, family and railroad workers from as far away as Milwuakee and Chicago. Any connections to these Hubachers or ideas about how I can find more information from this county please contact Rachel Downing, gembug@hotmail.com Thankyou. The correct spelling of this surname is HUBACHER but have found it with various spellings due to poor writing skills of previous generations, usually written as it sounds.
Rosemary, In your roll call list you have Johnston. I am searching for William Johnston married to Margaret Hickman who was born about 1824. They lived in Monroe, Belmont, Noble, and Washington counties in Ohio. They had a daughter Mary Catherine Johnston/Johnson who had a child, Thomas Jefferson Johnson. Do any of these names sound familiar. If so, or if you have something that might connect, I would love to correspond with you. Mary -----Original Message----- From: Rosemary D. Hogue who taught the Plainview (Rice) School for almost forty years ... The houses and other buildings of our early settlers were of round-log structure being later replaced with hewed logs. Windows were made of oiled papers. The floors of split-log, the roofs of clap-board and the fire place of stone with "tobacco stick" chimneys. Cooking and heating were provided by the large open fire place which would accommodate huge logs as fuel. Cooking and living furniture were of the simpilest. Beds, tables and chairs were home-made as was also the clothing for old and young. The food was chiefly home produced, plentiful and wholesome without regard to vitamin content. There was an abundance of wild game. The streams were full of fish uncantaminated by oil or refuse. Domestic animals ran at large during the earliest era of settlement. Eliza THOMPSON, and aunt of Asher BEARDMORE, told of hunting cows on the Pickens farm one mile west of the school house. She had followed the sound of the bell for some distance until it became early twilight. Upon hurriedly rounding a tree she came within arms length of a large bear which was contentedly eating his supper of wild berries. The cows weren't driven up until the next morning. Eliza was seven years of age when this incident happened. ...
