Peebles company, Cumberland PA. buried in Ogleby Park, West Virginia, grave marked by the DAR, married to Hanna Mitchell also buried by her husband. Believe his first wife was Mary Hervey, unable to confirm. Josias son, Alexnder is my ancestor, by his son John and Matilda Brown,(nee Ferrel)(1) Henry Drum. John Brown's first wife was Sarah Allen and their first daughter, Isabella was a half sister to John. Isabella was Catherine Fedorchak's ancestor. I was in Monroe County and Wheeling in October, 99 and was able to copy many pages at the library in Woodsfield. Josias's will, at Wheeling listed son, Elijah as the administrator of his estate. I would be interested in any information from the family of Elijah or other lines that might take us further back. I have also had information from William Wilson Brown's family, a brother of Alexander Brown. Alexander Brown, buried in Eggar Ridge Cemetery, Monroe County, was possibly married to a Dorcus Dement, unable to confirm, however several times the names has appeared, Dorcus Brown, also buried at Eggar Ridge. John Brown died, Matilda sold their property to Isabella Brown Hawkins, her step daughter, and bought 20 acres in Monroe County. She sold the land in 1865 and "moved west". We find her with sons Josiah and Albert on the 1870 census in Kansas. John & Matilda Brown had 4 sons, Josiah, b. 1849/50, Lewis H., David and Albert Franklin Brown. Josiah is my grandfather, and I have found the familes of Lewis & Albert. I believe that David may have married Adaline Starky and stayed in Ohio. Matilda also had a son Alexander Drum who also came to Kansas. I am also looking for comfirmation of where Matilda is buried. She may have stayed in Kansas or I found a marriage of a Matilda Brown and a Peter Weber in 1881 in a book at the library in woodsfield. Did not have time to check the age of this Matilda, who would have been in late 60 or so when I was in Ohio. Josiah b. 1850, married Sarah A.Hobbs, 1880 in Monroe County, daughter of John F. Hobbs and Marion Hobbs, Belmont County nee Shotwell, and sister to Judge Thadius Hobbs, Fly, Ohio and Susan Hobbs who married a James Meredith and were in Ohio at the time of Sadie's death in 1935. Lewis H. Brown, brother to Josiah married Josephine Hobbs, sister to Sadie, in 1876. Albert Franklin Brown married Sarah Ross in Kansas. Josiah Harlan Brown, Sr., b. 1850, was a butcher in Severy, and later a builder in Chanute Kansas. He and his wife are buried in Twin Grove Cemetery, Severy, Kansas, just East of Wichita. The house is still standing in Severy, KS, that my father, Josiah Harlan Brown, Jr. was born in 1887. The Josiah Brown, Sr.'s also had two children who died during an epedimic in Kansas, William Oliver Brown, and J. Franklin Brown. Going back from Josias, according to Catherine's reserarch, Josias father was a Samuel Brown, wife, Hannah Rundall, of Cumberland county, PA and in other of her articles, an interview with a Brown said the the first of our line was a Clement Brown. Do not know any port of entry for a Clement Brown, might look in the Carolinas. To sumarize, I would like to find the following information to continue on: Brown families connected to this family especially other children of Josias, b. 1744 Dement relating to a marriage to Alexander Brown Starkey possible marriage to David Brown If Matilda Brown was married to Peter Weber in 1881 The spelling change from Josias, b. 1744 to Josiah, b 1850 is correct, not a typo. Dr. Silas Harlan grandaughter married into the Brown Family in Kansas. For my grandfather to have been named Harlan in 1850, there had to be an earlier connection. I am looking for it. My father, grandfather, myself, my son and brother all carry the Harlan name as our middle name. . I am sending this to all the lists I originally sent to as have had so many queries as to what would be the correct way. I never started these ROLL CALLS, but have gained things from them. Thought the following might be more explanatory. My way serves the same purpose as a ROLL CALL, but I think fits in with the purpose of the mail lists which do not allow ROLL CALL. I sure didn't envision all these questions I have been receiving from new members wondering what is correct. I am not an expert, but am giving hints to help all of us. You can still participate in a ROLL CALL. The idea was for the members to get the names they are researching out on the Internet again and they called it a ROLL CALL. I think you should put the surname of the person you are researching in the subject line with perhaps even an approximate date. Example BROWN early 1800s. Then in the letter you could be more specific if you choose. I would also send an e-mail for each name. This way each name you are searching gets undivided attention. I don't think that a ROLL CALL with just a list of names serves much purpose as we never know what years are involved or anything else. The ones I benefited from were the ones who had a list of surnames in the subject line and then a few more details in the body of the message. Roil Call tells us nothing and when you are rushed or as busy as many of us are, we tend to delete and never look and you are cheating yourselves as well as others because the answer might be there, but no one opens it to find out. There is room to do 2 or 4 names in the subject line. Perhaps Brown, Jones, Smith 1800s. This tells everyone a lot. As has been pointed out to me, this is also a problem for the Archives. Can you imagine going into the Archives and checking to see if in the past several years someone was searching your name so you can contact them, and there you find 1000 queries titled ROLL CALL.? Would you open those or skip them? Just think you might miss that connection you have been searching for for years. Hope this clarifies my thoughts and does serve everyone's purpose. Jerilyn

Many times I have opened a query that says UNSUBSCRIBE and find a query. We need to be more careful in our reply. Most times when I see UNSUBSCRIBE I just delete, but now am afraid to. Those of you sending your mail this way are losing a lot of potential help. J This goes along with putting names in Roll Call and not Roll Call. Taking a little more time and sending your query correctly will not only same those of us on several lists a lot of time, but more importantly will get you more help. You are wasting your time with your queries when you aren't careful in how you send them out. Jerilyn

My wife's great-grandfather, James Kaldoo Shaffer, was a Methodist Episcopal minister in Stafford between 1882 and 1885. His obituary states that he had been seriously injured in a "runaway" ten years before he died (which points to the summer or fall of 1884 as the time of this incident). Although the obituary did not state the place of the accident, I am assuming it occurred somewhere near Stafford. (Although he had been a "circuit" minister early in his preaching career, I think that by 1884 preaching circuits had largely disappeared. The relevance of this comment is in figuring out the likelihood that the runaway actually occurred in or near Stafford.) The obituary I have for him was printed in the 1895 annual minutes of the East Ohio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (which I believe would now be the North-East Conference of the United Methodist Church). The obituary states in part "Ten years ago he was seriously injured in a runaway. For a time it was thought that his injuries would prove fatal, but he slowly recovered strength, beginning a protracted meeting before he was able to walk without crutches or to stand during preaching. This meeting was wonderfully blessed of God. He told his wife, as health slowly returned to him, that he asked the Lord, if it should be his will, to spare him for ten years more of service. That was the time granted. Saturday evening, October 27, 1894, on his charge at Richmond Center, O., he retired in his usual health, planning to preach the next day. The morning of Sunday, October 28, they found him at rest, with a sweet smile on his face, the bed undisturbed by any sign of struggle, as though in some pleasant dream he had been called home." Right now that comment in his obituary is the only information I have about the accident, but I am very curious as to further details of what happened. If someone on the list can lead me to any resources (such as newspapers) which recorded this event, or to details of his three year stint as a minister in Stafford, I would gladly trade for research at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. For the person who inquired about this surname, In the mid 1830's, several Monroe Co. families migrated west and became pioneer settlers in Olive Twp. of Elkhart Co., IN. In Olive Twp., there is an old cemetery referred to as the Bell-Shutts Cemetery. There are only 14 identifed graves that contain the bodies of the following Monroe Co. surnames: Archer, Inks (probably Enochs) and Morris. There are also a few SHUTTS listed in the 1850 Elkhart Co. census at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/in/elkhart/census/1850/pg0002a.txt A pre-1850 searchable database for Indiana marriages can be accessed at: http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/tango/marriage/s-t.qry?function=form The SCHUTZ surname is also somewhat common in that area and may be a spelling corruption of SHUTTS.
