This message came to me from a relative in Iowa. I don't have an email address for the person making the original inquiry but if anyone has a connection to these folks I'll be happy to pass info or email address back to my cousin. Nancy Quite awhile ago, you mentioned a webb page of Noble county cousins or such. There is someone here in Iowa county looking for an Ambrose Elliott b. 1788 in England and coming to the Belmont-Morgan-Noble area. He had Margaret who married J.P. Sivard of that region, David A., James, William, and a Dinah who married a John Wagner. Would you or some of the others have had an interest in these people? Didn't notice a wife for him, perhaps she died in Ohio. There is some discussion about a monument here for him but he was buried elsewhere. He was responsible for the present Millersburg cemetery and the J.P. Sivard was quite a go getter himself.
Sue, R stands for range, t stands for township and s for section; the Monroe, Belmont, Washington county areas plus other surrounding counties was the first place in the U. S. to have this type of land description in use. Ohio was "an experimental" state with these system devised by the federal government; It does making for locating property quite easy. After this trial period in Ohio the federal government used it in all the states west of Ohio--so locating where your ancestor's property was/is quite easy. Each township was divided into 36 sections of 640 acres; one section being reserved for what is called "school lands"--sometimes this was sold to raise money for schools. Exception to the 640 acres is if your ancestor purchased land along the Ohio River--the sections were partial sections with less than the 640 acres. If one knows the R T and S of the ancestor's property from a deed record, one can go to the engineer's office in Woodsfield purchase a map of the township and pinpoint who owns that property today. From there it is easy to ask enough questions of the residents to lead you to the property. The maps are very nominal in fee--less than five dollars. These maps also detail the county and township roads, but I don't think that cemeteries are marked. However, there is something called the U.S. Geographical Maps that list streams, and various other things and I think locations of some cemeteries; these are available in Ohio at the Dept. of Natural Resources. Sue, I forget the name of the road, but Natural Resources is located in Columbus fairly close to Northland Mall or Rte 161--not far from Knox county. These maps are probably the basis for the website referred in another posting, but I'm not sure. Sorry to be so long in my answers, but it is my librarian mind at work and the fact that I have been doing genealogy for 20 years--pre computer. Please someone correct me if I am wrong in my explanation of the RTS system. Regards, Janet Conn
Sandra, Knox Co.isn`t to far from Monroe Co.;this summer I`d like to plan a day in Washington Twsp. to locate where George D.Fogle lived and see if there are gravesites nearby, since there really isnt an account of all Cemeteries,I doubt there`s an account of misc.private gravesites. I found some of my Bradford ancestry in Adams Co. to be buried in a small private Bradford Gravesite. I`m planning on checking it out this summer also. While I`m on here....perhaps you or someone can help me out with a question. This is out of the book "EARLY OHIO SETTLERS" Fogle,William(Z) 1836 July 21 Monroe Co.,Oh 08 06 04 Could someone tell me what the (Z) stands for? 08 listed under R stands for? 06 listed under T stands for? 04 listed under S stands for? I don`t own the book, just copied a page with Fogle`s on it,this was the only listing for a Fogle in Monroe Co. Any Surname between the names FISKETT-FORSYTHE I can do a look-up if anyone`s interested!!! I would like to Sincerely Thank Everyone for all the help I`ve received on this list, you guys are the greatest! I`ve got a good 20 pages of reference between Monroe and Noble Co. What started out to be just a look-up on my FOGLE ancestry kept snowballing- I`ve sent most of it to the FOGLE-L list already, to stir up some action! Janet Conn and Betsy........thanks for explaining how the cemeteries are run in Monroe Co. If a compilation of Cemeteries ever reveal Fogle`s, please keep the Fogle-L list in mind. I`ll volunteer to do typing of lists also. Betsy thanks for the GNIS link, I haven`t had a chance to play around in there, but it sounds like a handy tool once you get the hang of it. I live in Knox Co.,Ohio, and have never been to Monroe Co. but the Wayne National Forest area sounds like it would be beautiful this time of year. Take Care Everyone, Sue Fogle/Sisk Hitti@ecr.net

For those who are not yet familiar with this wonderful resource (the GNIS query site), I want to point out that in my experience, only about half the cemeteries which are still in existence today appear in the GNIS database. I have never been able to figure out any correlation between cemetery characteristics and inclusion in this database--it definitely is *not* size (my maternal grandparents are buried in a cemetery which has at least 40,000 burials but which is not included in the GNIS database). In summary, GNIS is great for locating *some* cemeteries, but the fact that any particular cemetery name does not show up in their listings has no meaning. Rollie
Sue, The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) will give you the names of 15 cemeteries in the vicinity of Graysville. Unfortunately, these are located by latitude and longitude only; Low Gap Cemetery is not on this list; perhaps it has another name. This site will also give you a small map showing each loca- tion, but unfortunately again, there are no road or stream names on these, nor can you generate a map showing all 15 at once. Still, it's better than nothing. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisprod The one commonly called Graysville Cemetery is actually a Church of Christ cemetery. It's located south of Graysville on Long Run Road east of Rte 26 ( the main road through Graysville). Possibly the Church of Christ might have some burial records. There's another small, neglected cemetery on Long Run Road just west of the Rte 26 intersection, next to some farm equipment. Here I found the grave of my ancestor, Calvin P. Knowlton, with a tombstone erected by his grandson Elmer E. Knowlton. I hope to make another trip to the area this summer; if I do, I will try to record all the names in this cemetery. Betsy
My maternal aunt was Agnes "Peg" GIVENS b/abt 1905 in Marshall/Ohio Co. area of WV married Pete GRAY. When I was a child they lived at Fernwood, Jefferson Co., Ohio. There has been a hint that Pete's name was William Peter GRAY and that he was born in Graysville. I had no idea where Graysville was until today's messages. Does any one have info to share on Graysville and especially on Pete Gray. Any assistance appreciated Audrey

Please indulge me a minute--I need the break... This has been my first attempt at offering lookups to others. I can tell you that the handful of connections I have made so far for folks has filled me with almost as much satisfaction as when I find my own ancestors. And that when I cant find something helpful Im just as frustrated. Yes I am COMPLETELY overwhelmed. I cant tell you how many requests I have received so far--BUT THAT IS OK!! I love doing it and I will get to them all. Please be patient. Please also remember to send me your requests personally instead of to the list. If you should recieve something useful in reply and wish to share it thats fine, but for everyones sanity, please lets do this off-list. The last thing I have learned (so far) is that everyone who ever lived in Virginia has a relative on these lists! (grin) What fun this is!! Please, If you own source materials or you have the priviledge of checking them out at the library like I do, PLEASE VOLUNTEER! It is the most rewarding thing I have done genealogically since I tripped over my great great grandmas grave and 'discovered' her! Hugs all around--what a great thing these lists are! Hi, Yes, I am sure that some cemeteries are cared for by township trustees. In Jackson Township, both Witten Cemetery and Tuel/Mehrley Cemetery are considered township cemeteries although both began as private family cemeteries years and years ago. The clerk of the township holds the records of the cemeteries. Several years ago when a number of tombstones were toppled by vandals the trustees had these stones uprighted and replaced on their footers. Luckily none were broken. There are other cemeteries in the township which are nnot cared for by the trustees--one being Locust Grove which is located by a church. My husband and I purchased a burial plot in Witten Cemetery about five years ago and the deed is from the trustees to my husband and myself. Perhaps we can get a discussion going about who is "care taking" various cemeteries in Monroe County. Recently I have been wondering who is "care taking" the Pioneer Cemetery in Woodsfield. Does anyone know? Also in reference: the Monroe County Commissioners don't take care of cemeteries; these three elected officials are different from the three individuals who are elected in each of the townships as trustees. The commissioners are elected by the entire county. Regards, Janet Conn HBaker1432@aol.com wrote: > > Monroe County Trustees do not and will not care for cemeteries in their > county. I am interested in the Graysville cemeteries as well. I believe my great great grandfather, Jesse BATTIN, who settled in Monroe County around 1834 and lived there until his death in 1888, is buried there. ----- Original Message ----- From: jconn <jlconn@lex.infi.net> To: <OHMONROE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 28, 2000 2:28 PM Subject: Re: [OHMONROE-L] Cemetery In Graysville > Sue, > Much of Washington Twp. lies in the Wayne National Forest area. Need lookup on 1850 or 1860 Monroe County records for ASA W. ROBINSON ( wife Mary Jane ). He is believed to have died early 1860s in Monroe County altho no record of his death date has been found. A son James was married to Eliza Winland of Monroe County and then remarried after her death to Diana Powell also of Monroe County. I know there was a courthouse fire that caused the loss of much info; does anyone know if the fire was a total loss to the courthouse? I was hoping to find property deeds or other documentation during his residency. Thanks Cathy Robinson Wilmot
