    3. This has probably been said before but a MUST for anyone backroading around southeastern Ohio is the Ohio Atlas and Gazeteer published by Delorme. 1. [OHMONROE-L] Rosa/Rose Brown
    2. SUE SISK
    3. Hea All..........Bonnie found my Rosa Brown! Sue Sue, I may have found Rosa's parents. Catherine Fedorchak had BROWN ancestry, I believe. If you tie into her ancestry...this is curious, cause she was my third cousin, 1 generation removed on the Burkhardt line. From "Family Research in Monroe Co., OH", Vol. II, Part I by Catherine Fedorchak: (Newspaper articles written in the Spirit of Democracy in the 1970s) In turn, the first part of this is from Hardesty's History. "JEPTHA DUVALL - Hardesty, pg. 12 - Sunsbury Twp. Came to this county in the spring of 1833 and has since been engaged in farming in Sunsbury township. He was born in Pa., Washington Co. Feb. 21, 1803. His parents were John DUVALL and Lydia MILISON. Mr. Duvall was married in Belmont Co. Ohio Feb. 14, 1828 to Mary BECKETT, who was born in Virginia Oct. 3, 1803. Her parents were John BECKETT and Hannah POTTS. They came to this county in 1831. The children of Jeptha and Mary Duvall are: Hannah J., born March 16, 1829, died May 20, 1850; Eleanor, Aug. 12, 1830, died Nov. 20, 1850; Dorothy, b. Nov. 25, 1831, died Nov. 30, 1862; Elias, Dec. 17, 1833, lives at Keokuk, Iowa; Mary, Oct. 3, 1835, died June 22, 1859; Samuel N., April 30, 1838, lives at Ozark, Ohio; Lydia (BROWN) May 27, 1843, died Jan. 7, 1871; Margaret E., Nov. 2, 1844, died Nov. 7, 1862. Mr. Duvall's address is Ozark." And then Catherine goes on to say: "Additional information - Many of the families in Sunsbury Township were of Quaker origin and Jeptha Duvall falls in this category. His mother, Lydia Millison, was disowned from that sect for marrying "contrary to discipline." That record can be found in W. W. Hinshaw's "Friends Records" for the Westermoreland (Pa.) Monthly Meeting - under date of Sept. 24, 1796 - James and Abigail Millison and children, Sarah, Mary, Lydia, James, Ann, and John were received on certificate from Bradford Monthly Meeting dated 4-17-1795, and endorsed by the Redstone Monthly Meeting Sept. 2, 1796. It seems that Lydia was not the only Millison child to marry contrary to discipline - the records show that Sarah Buffington, nee Millison; Mary Jones, nee Millison; and Ann Jones, nee Millison, all married out of the sect. Also James Millison and wife, Dorothy were discharged in 1816, reinstated in 1817, moved to Plainfield Monthly Meeting in 1817. Hinshaw's books are a must for a researcher who suspects that his ancestors may have been Quakers. Jeptha's Duvall's daughter, Lydia, married my gr-grandmother, Isabella BROWN HAWKINS' brother, JAMES BROWN. James was a Private in Co. G 36th Reg. Ohio Infantry, and enlisted on Aug. 12, 1861, and discharged Sept. 3, 1864. He was sick at Cowen Station, Tenn. from Aug. 1863 to the end of his enlistment period. He was born in Monroe Co., Ohio, a son of JOHN and SARAH ALLEN BROWN. At the time of his enlistment, he was 21 years old, 5' 11" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and a farmer. He married Lydia Duvall on Nov. 26, 1864 at the bride's parents in Monroe Co. by the minister, Perry Orr. They were the parents of ROSE (NORRIS) born Sept. 28, 1870, and Ella M. BROWN, who had died by 1898. Lydia Duvall Brown died Jan. 1, 1871, and James married (2) Margaret E. Mackelroy. By this marriage he had Hattie R. BROWN, born 3-18-1876. James BROWN died Oct. 1, 1877, and his widow married Philip W. HUNT. ROSE BROWN was brought up by her aunt, Isabella HAWKINS. Isabella stated in an affidavit in behalf of Rosa's claim to benefits, that she was 66 years old (Jan. 28, 1898) the sister of James BROWN. James HAWKINS also made an affidavit in this case. Now how many generations back does that take you??? Catherine wrote this article for the Spirit of Democracy May 19, 1975. I was really looking for George Fogle's parents in this book. I found this little bit in "Family Research in Monroe Co., Ohio", Vol. II Part II: "My gr-grandmother SARA ALLEN BROWN (1811-1847) - buried at Moffetts near Jackson Ridge had a brother named Francis ALLEN. " Looks like yours and Catherine's ancestry is pretty close. When you get this all in your database, let me know what the relationship to Catherine you are. In other words, what is Sara to you? From "Family Research in Monroe Co., Ohio" Vol. III: "Matilda BROWN [bb I think maybe John Browns second wife] sued John BROWN for divorce, but June 17th, 1857, the divorce was dismissed by the plaintiff. They probably remained together for a year, as he died in July 1858, and later John's daughter, Isabella and her husband, James HAWKINS, bought up the family farm from Matilda. Isabella's obituary notice had stated that she had been born and died on the same farm, and that was a clue that led me to her father, John BROWN. However, before Matilda dismissed her divorce suit, I also found, merely by hunting page by page in the records, that she had enjoined John from getting his hands on any of her property which consisted of some sheep, saddles, household items, etc. That in itself is enough to lead one to believe that she was probably a widow, and the person to whom her property was entrusted was Amos TRUAX, and in view of the previous record here, he was probably her son-in-law." This is the previous record: Another case I happened onto in the court records, and which is unindexed is dated 1849. Jacob WINLAND and Nancy WINLAND, his wife, sued Matilda BROWN, late Matilda DRUM and John BROWN her husband, et al. The et als included Mary Ann TRUAX and Amos TRUAX, her husband, Margaret DRUM, Elizabeth DRUM, Alexander DRUM, Frances DRUM, and Amanda Jane DRUM. That in itself doesn't tell a researcher very much, but when added to other bits and pieces I found over the space of all those years, I know that Matilda DRUm and John BROWN her husband refer to my ancestor, John BROWN, and his 2nd wife, who was the widow of Henry DRUM, nee FERRELL. The et als were heirs of Henry and Matilda FERRELL DRUM, but this particular record does not spell that out." 3. Does anyone on the list know anything of a Mt. Sinai Methodist Church and Cemetery? Notes I have say it may be near Clarington, Ohio, 4 miles west, on Sykes Ridge Road. I tried to find it two years ago, on a trip to Ohio, but I had no luck. I saw some beautiful farm country and several cemeteries but nothing to identify this cemetery. I have kin who I believe were buried there in 1866 -1870. I'm looking for the burial place of Samuel Green, his wife Elizabeth Cannon Green, and hopefully Samuel's mother and father, Henry C. Green and Jane McGary Green Jackson. Family records say this is where they are buried, but I can't find them. Any help would be appreciated. Mary Nell Green Fowler

    3. Hi Mal, I just got the 1880 Census on George D.Fogle`s family and there is another son CHARLES C.FOGLE b.abt 1872. Does anyone know about a Fogle Law Firm "Fogle and Fogle"??? It was supposedly started by a Charles Fogle, but it may have been from one of his descendents named Charles Fogle also. Any information on this would be most appreciated. 1. [OHMONROE-L] CHAFFEE, PEARSON, JAY, PATTY
    2. Ellen Bisson
    3. I am new to your list--very new, but I'm jumping to identify the families of interest to me. All of these families connect to Luther Chaffee of (Wyandot & Miami) through his daughter, my gggrandmother, Harriet Matilda/Mary Chaffee b 4 Aug 1813. Luther CHAFFEE went from CT (or PA) to Wyandot Co., then in 1850 to Miami County. His wife was Rebecca PERKINS or PARKER. They had 12 ch b between 1809-1834. Luther & Rebecca's dau Harriet m Harley Parker Cutting in Crawford County on 1 Jan 1837. When Harriet d on 13 Apr 1850, her husband, Harley, placed their 3 little girls with three different families: 1. Levi JAY & his wife Phebe Patty took my ggrandmother, Zerelda Maria Cutting. Phebe was the d/o Charles Patty and his 2nd wife Phebe Pearson. Charles Patty's 1st wife was Mary Ann Jay, a likely aunt to Levi. Levi & his family went to Rice County, KS, where Levi died. 2. A family named PEARSON took Mary Ida Cutting. There is a connection betweent the Pearson family and a family named Acton. Mary Ida m Joseph Perry Acton who was a relative of Mrs. Pearson's. 3. One of Luther Chaffee's brothers, William Morgan Chaffee and his wife Mary Eliza Smith, were foster parents of the third daughter, Harriet Matilda Cutting. I am hoping you can help me find more info abt these three foster families. There is no record in Wyandot's Probate Court for guardianships, but I have not yet checked Miami's records as this Miami connection surfaced only this week. It's too long a story, but thanks for listening. Regards, Ellen Knowles Bisson

    1. [OHMONROE-L] Early Ohio Settlers
    2. jconn
    3. Hi everyone, The following is just to say don't be discouraged when you receive a lookup and your ancestor's name isn't there. Without seeing the book and its preface it is difficult to know just what the informatin covers. When using a reference it is helpful to know the "scope" of the reference. This is a librarian term for "what information does" the book/reference cover or contain. Early Ohio Settlers; Purchasers of Land in Southeastern Ohio, 1800-1840 is " A complete alphabetized listing of ORIGINAL purchaser of land sold by or from the Marietta Land Office, Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, under the Land Act of 1800" Key to this is ORIGINAL which in this case means this is a list of people who purchased the property directly from the U. S. Government. Example: My Philip Witten ancestor purchased property that is now in Jackson Township in 1790; however he does not show up in this type of early owners list as he purchased the property from a "land spectulator" who was the orginial owner from the government. The land spectulator's name would appear. Also there were sales of this land prior to the Land Act of 1800. In the preface of Early Ohio Settlers, is list of spectulators--Archibald Woods and Nathan McFarland being two that purchased land that later became part of Monroe County. Also this book in its preface gives a discussion of the range, township, section method of describing land. Reading a preface is just as boring to librarians as to anyone else, but it tells you if the book will actually benefit you and cover what you are trying to find. Regards, Janet Conn

I gotta get to another library for better resources! Sue

    1. [OHMONROE-L] Dating Tombstones - info
    2. SUE SISK
    3. Got this info on dating tombstones from another list. Sue DATING TOMBSTONES One way to help find the era your ancestor was buried is to examine the material from which the tombstone is made. If your ancestor has a stone made of slate or common fieldstone (except wood used by pioneers), chances are the stone dates from 1796-1830. * If the stone is flat-topped hard marble, dates are about 1830-1849. * If the "mystery" stone is round or pointed soft marble with cursive inscriptions, look for a date of 1845-1868. * Masonic four-sided stones began in 1850 and are still in use today. * Pylons, columns and all exotic-style monuments are usually dated 1860-1900. * Zinc monuments date from 1870-1900. * Granite, now common, came into use about 1900. If the writing is too faded to read, use a 75 watt black light bulb in any lamp that casts light directly on the written message. The writing will miraculously appear.

Sue and list, While searching for some other Monroe Co Record, I found a list of Monroe Cemeteries listed by township; 193 cemeteries are listed; I'm sorry I don't have the citation of where I found this; However, at the beginning of the page it states: "the following list was taken from a W.P.A. list and map located in the Recorder's Office in the court house at Woodsfield." W.P.A. records are always considered excellent sources.
