The OHGenWeb Archives is proud to announce the addition of an Ohio Migration Database to further research in Ohio. The URL is at http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~marce/oh/migrations.shtml Where did they come from? Where did they go? Ohio had many different routes of migration. The ships come into Cleveland and the Lake Erie ports on the north, the paddlewheelers came up the Mississippi River to the Ohio River into Cincinnati, and folks crossed the state on their way west from the states to the east. View a map of land migration routes and/or visit articles about Pioneer Migration Routes through Ohio. As the population of Ohio grew, pioneer families left in search of more land and opportunity to the west. We hope that this database will help you discover the locations from which they came. Maggie

My great-grandfather, Charles Keevert (Kubbert in Germany) came over about 1851-2 probably with a brother/nephew(?) Jacob Kubbert). Jacob has naturalization papers from Monroe Co. I have been unable to find papers on Charles. Does anyone have any ideas where to go next? The courthouse offices don't seem to have any information but maybe Ihave been looking in the wrong office. Hi Martha, My gg-grandmother was Lydia C. Brown, b. 11 Jan 1833 in Monroe County, married 7 Oct 1853 John Milton Cline, d. 9 Oct 1890 in Tyler Co. WV. Lydia's parents were reportedly John and Nancy Brown, but your Nancy is too young to be her mother. I suppose there could have been another John and Nancy Brown who had a daughter Lydia. Or my information about Lydia's parents is wrong. Lyle's query prompts my own CRAWFORD question. Maybe we can shake something loose that will help us both. I'm interested in learning more about W.J. Crawford, who owned land near Graysville in Washington Twp. in 1869, and was also either a minister or a J.P., as he performed a marriage in 1868. Specifically, did he have a daughter named Martha, who would have been born ca. 1850-60? Did he have a son also named W.J.? Did he come from Ireland, and if so, when? Did he have a sister who married James McNiece? The maiden name of James McNiece's wife was Crawford, according to his son's death record. James McNiece came from Ireland between 1840 and 1848. He owned land adjacent to W.J. Crawford in 1869. The McNieces and Crawfords still lived on the same land in 1898. Can anyone help with Crawfords? Am I right in assuming the publications of the abstaracts and obits from the Spirit of Democracy and other Monroe County newspapers are of Monroe County residents only? I DO have family from Monroe County ( Nancy ( Steele) and John Brown(b. 1807), but the particular person I have been check for now is James Wilson Junkins (1810-1896). I know he lived NEAR the Monroe County line, and many of his people reportedly buried in Bealsville area (Fedorchak Papers). But I can not find him listed in any of the obit books or newspaper abstracts. He died in York twp, Belmont County. I am beginning to think maybe this is why he is not listed. What do you think?

Hi Michael, While researching KNOWLTON, I found this in the 1870 Monroe Co. census, Bethel Twp: Living in the household of William KNOWLTON, 35, b. OH, farmer, and Malissa WILLIAMS KNOWLTON, 26, b. OH, with 6 children 9 and under: DIRTH, James age 74 b. OH retired farmer The implied birth year for James DIRTH would be 1796. I see from your posting that William DEARTH (b. 1780) married Susan WILLIAMS. Do you have any idea whether Malissa WILLIAMS was related to Susan WILLIAMS? Malissa's father was Levi WILLIAMS, who lived north of Graysville in Washing- ton Twp. on the Wayne Twp. line. Is it possible that James was a much younger brother of William DEARTH? The 1869 land map of Bethel Twp. shows James DEARTH's land in the NE corner, with Wm. KNOWLTON adjacent to the west, James KNOWLTON adjacent to the south, and "Barna" DEARTH a quarter section away from James DEARTH to the east. There are no DEARTHS shown in 1869 in Washington Twp, where Graysville is located, but there's an A. WILLIAMS southwest of Graysville near the M.E. Church. The reason I'm interested in the DEARTHs is because my gg- grandfather, Thomas J. KNOWLTON (1846-1932) divorced his wife, Hulda Jane NALLEY (1845-1927) and married Mary Frances DEARTH in 1878 in Tyler Co. WV. Thomas was the brother of the William KNOWLTON with whom James DIRTH was living in 1870. I believe that Thomas and Mary Frances remained in West Virginia after their marriage. Any idea how the DEARTH/WILLIAMS/KNOWLTON connections work here? Betsy

Hello Cousins, I have a special request. The Monroe County Death Certificate for my ancestor who died in 1922 has "American" in the space which is labeled Color or Race. Since I am not familiar with whose responsibility it is to fill in the certificate, I will mention that the Registrar was George E Rose and the doctor was C. A Smith. What does anyone think of this? Was it a common answer? I thought there might be other Listers who would take a quick look at certificates they hold for the same time frame, or signed by the same men. Thanks.
