I forgot the names Egger and Eggeman also. I checked the map of Switzerland and many of the villages they came from are in the general area of Lucerne, (Attiswil, Trub) according to a Swiss guy I work with. Someone posted a message about some of these people being Anabaptists escaping persecution. The guy I work with says there are great records in Switzerland because people have to tell the government when they move etc. Has anyone ever tried to get Swiss records? Lisa Newton

I would like to know who else has Swiss relatives who were in the Woodsfield area? My Rif/Reef family came over in 1866, but I'm not sure when they arrived in Monroe Co. It is possible they had relatives here already, or other families came over with them on the same Ship "Laura" sailing from Antwerp, Belgium. I don't have the entire ship list so I can't compare surnames right now. Some other families that married into the Reef line were Siegenthaler, Gasser, Heiniger, Alleman/Allman and more. Please let me know if you have Swiss Born people circa 1850-1870. Were these people a common religion? Who knows more history? Lisa Newton
Soldiers from Monroe County enlisted in many units such as the 26th OVI, 78th OVI, 116 th OVI and several Virginia (West) units. Note that these units were loyal to the Union not the Confederacy. If you try www.ancestor.com and do a search on a name you will get a free access to a civil war data base that will list muster in and out date and normally rank or even military specialty. You know that would be a pretty neat genealogical project to record the participation of Monroe Countians in the Great War of Rebellion as it was called. I wonder what the Historical Society has on the subject? Along the same lines I am interested in the Underground Railroad in Monroe County. This is a very interesting and worthy thread and I would very much like to see a large response. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Dyer <pmdyer@netins.net> To: OHMONROE-L@rootsweb.com <OHMONROE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, March 22, 2000 10:51 PM Subject: [OHMONROE-L] Civil War soldiers >Posted on: Monroe Co. There is only one soldier listed as being from Monroe County, OH. Most never gave a residence so it would be difficult to track. I understand there is a book on Early Settlers in Monroe County Ohio. I understand the book was in Woodsfield, Monroe County Library. Does anyone have access to it? If so, I believe there is a story in the book on the Dillon family. Perhaps James Dillon. I am looking for information on the parents of William Dillon who was born 1822/1823 in OH. William's wife was Elizabeth (?). Thank you for your help. Perry Adams #2 Tulip Lane East San Carlos, California 94070

A few days ago there was a question about whether the State of Ohio required a woman to be married in the county in which her father resided. Judging from a marriage affidavit I have, I guess the answer is yes, at least in 1874, and if she was still living with her parents. It reads: THE STATE OF OHIO Monroe County, ss, Mr. McNiece, having made application for a LICENSE, for himself and Eliza Smith, and being duly sworn, says that he is of the age of twenty-one years, and has no wife living, and that Eliza Smith is of the age of eighteen years, a resident of said County, and has no husband living, and that said parties are not nearer kin than second cousins, and are both of the same color. William McNiece Sworn to and Subscribed before me this 20th day of March A.D. 1874 (looks like) Jas R. Morris It's interesting that the husband-to-be did all the swearing and signing; Eliza Smith's signature doesn't appear anywhere. Betsy

I have just returned from examining the 1880 census records in the hope of locating the state of birth for the parents of my William Dillon and his wife Elizabeth (?). I was not able to locate my William Dillon & wife in the 1880 census. William was born in OH in 1822/1823, possibly in Monroe County. He and his wife, Elizabeth were living in Monroe County in 1850 in Green township. They had three sons at that time. Abraham age 6, Henry age 4 and John age 3. About 1856 William & Elizabeth sold land in Monroe county and moved to Lineville, Wayne County, IA. Does anyone out there have any information on the parentage of my William Dillon and his wife Elizabeth (?) Dillon. They would have been married about 1843. Perry Adams.

This is a rather convoluted group. I'm hoping someone might recognize some of these people as they seem to be a number of brick walls for me! Sorry for the duplication for those who are members of all three lists but they seem to have bounced between all three counties. Sabina JAMES born abt Dec 1824 married Jacob SCHAUB in Guernsey County on 22 Jul 1844. I believe Sabina was the daughter of Thomas and Hannah JAMES and believe Thomas died abt 1836. Possible siblings for Sabina are Mary, Elizabeth, and Thomas. On 14 Jul 1849, Jacob married Elisabeth MISSEL (MISEL) in Morgan County. A physician, he is mentioned in the 1887 history of Noble County as residing for a short time around 1850 at Crooked Tree which is where Elisabeth was living. I have yet to locate Jacob and Elisabeth in an 1850 census. Sabina is residing with her mother, Hannah age 59, in Wright Twp, Guernsey County in 1850. Also listed are Margaret SCHALB age 5, and Hannah SCHALB age 3. Sabina and her mother both died in 1851, Feb and July respectively, and are both buried at Kennonsburg, Noble County so am assuming that area was previously Wright Twp, Guernsey.... Jacob and Elisabeth SCHAUB turn up in Sardis, Monroe County in 1860 and remain there the rest of their lives. Listed in the census are two sons, Jacob age 21, and Frederick age 17. Obviously these two predate both of Jacob's marriages. Also listed is a daughter, Catharine whose birthdate appears to be about 6 months prior to Jacob and Elisabeth's marriage. At the time of Jacob's death in 1877, his will lists only one son, Jacob, daughters Christina BARRACKMAN (husband Randolph), Mariah SCHAUB (in will 1873, not in probate in 1877), Margaret DENNIS (husband Adam), and Hannah WINDLAND (husband David). The next sentence mentions Catharine LEMMON (husband Salathiel). Obviously Jacob was married at least three times since he wasn't married to Sabina JAMES long enough or at the right time to account for all of the children. Is anyone researching the JAMES'? Who was Jacob's first wife? Jacob filed for divorce from Sabina in Monroe County in 1848 or so but the case was thrown out. When or did they actually divorce? Where were Jacob and Elisabeth and the remaining children in 1850? Where were the other children in 1860? Where does Catharine fit in? Where and when did the various children marry? What happened to any of them? Do I sound irriated with this group? Nancy
Am seeking info on Aaron and Elizabeth Gray Tichener who lived in Monroe Co., Union Twp., Ohio. He was born in 1780 in Poland and came to Ohio from the Monongahala Co. area (Morgantown). His wife was born 1788 in Ireland. Aaron fought in the War of 1812. Aaron and Elizabeth were in Monroe Co. as early as 1830. According to land records Aaron owned 41 acres in Union Twp. (which later became Noble Co.). They had a daughter Easter, born in 1817, who was my great-great-maternal grandmother. Aaron died in Noble Co. in an unknown year. Any help would be gratly appreciated. Thanks! Alice Gordon poohnsnug@1st.net
In checking the 1840 Monroe County census, I found a James Dillon whose age was between 60/70 and his wife between 50/60. They had a son between age 15 and 20. Could this son be my William Dillon. Is anyone out there tracing James Dillon from Monroe County in Perry Township? If so, could he have a son named William? In case anyone is interested I found in the 1840 Monroe County, OH census search the following information: Hugh Dillon in Franklin Township age 20/30 James Dillon in Perry Township age 60/70 John Dillon Franklin Township, age 50/60 Thomas Dillon, Franklin township age 20/30 Vincent Dillon Franklin township age 30/40 Perry Adams
