There are at least three households of Kincaids (not certain of the spelling on the census) in the 1850 census of Monroe County. I'll list them below and ask if anyone knows more about them -- the relationship between them (if any), where they lived in Pennsylvania, and their relationship to other Kincaid families researched by members of the list. I don't know if they were all in the same township or not but will list them by the Household Number. #26 -- Joseph, 24, PA; Sarah, 24, OH; Leander, 2, OH; and John, 2/12, OH. #146 -- Robert, 32, PA; Eunice (I think), 19, OH; John, 1, OH, and Mary Farrow, 65, PA. #224 -- Samuel, 77, PA; Nancy, 62, PA; James, 21, OH; and Nancy Dye, 10, OH. Joseph and Sarah of Household #24 are my ancestors and I know they remained in Monroe County through the 1860 census. Four of their first children died before they left Monroe Co. and at least some of them had readable stones in the Antioch Cemetery. Nancy of Household #224 is also buried in that cemetery (with a headstone) and supposedly her husband Samuel is also buried there. If there were other Kincaid families in the 1850 census, please let me know. Any and all help with the relationship of these people and leads to their ancestors will be very much appreciated. I believe my great great Grandmother Mary Hemphill, born in Ireland in 1772 was related to Washington Co, PA, Hemphills, but I have not been able to make a connection with anyone. Mary [Hemphill] married John Steel and lived most of their lives in Dunkard Twp of Greene Co, PA, but was recorded in 1810 as living in Buffalo Twp of Washington Co, PA. Any information you might have on the Hemphills in Washington Co, PA, would be appreciated. I believe they went west about 1840, maybe Ohio. Thanks , Wayne Steel. However, I looked in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Monroe Co, OH-There was no Noble Co, OH until 1851-to see if we can find some clues to your John Steel. There were no Hemphills in the county, but plenty of Steels. So here they are for your consideration. File it away; it may come in handy someday. I do know there is some biographical material on Samuel Steel. I believe he was appointed executor of the Estate of _____ Gray, the founder of Graysville. My oldest known ancestor was a Joseph Price who appeared in the 1790 Greene County, PA census married to Elizabeth Keener (granddaughter of Ulrich #1) with four sons. Two of their four sons were William S. Price and John Price b. 1798. John Price (found at http://www.floop.com/fam00004.htm) married Margaret Hickman abt 1822 and migrated with his family to Monroe County, OH in about 1830. He had seven identified children including a son named William b. 1822. There were also four unidentified children born before 1830 (probably while he was still in PA). Margaret Hickman was the daughter of William Hickman and Margaret Stewart, who also migrated from Greene Co. PA to Monroe Co. OH abt. 1825. Families of interest include Price, Keener, Hickman, Rush, Bowen, Conley, Grim(m), Stewart. John Price [email protected] http://www.floop.com/surnames.htm http://ww.floop.com/genealogy.htm
Dear Dona and Bob: A couple days ago I read that Isaac Williams was 14 when he left Winchester. In the back of my mind, something says his parents were killed by Indians or had died naturally. However, this is not "fact." I have not read a complete biography on Isaac Williams, but his name keeps popping up in my readings. If you give me a week, I will review my books and try to find other material through other sources. Meantime, what other genealogy and history do you have on the family. Maybe that will give me a better sense of where to dig. It is always in some indirect way that I discover ore about these pioneers. Thank you for your interest in these fabled and not so fabled heroes of the frontier. I am looking for info on his brother, John Williams, who lived in the Guernsey Co. area and helped with the building of Zanes's Trace or making the way from Wheeling to Kentucky along with Ebenezer Zane and his helpers. John Williams was from the Winchester area also and members of my family have said that John and Isaac were brothers or possibly half brothers.
