Spirit of Democracy November 23, 1911 Sardis The date has been set for the Alumni reception for December 26. Great preparations are being made by the home town alumni to entertain those who will be home for the holidays. Fred Moser arrived Monday from Winkler's Mills and has taken charge of the restaurant which he bought a few weeks ago. Miss Mary Bowen and June Elliott of New Martinsville spent Thursday evening here with her cousin Maude Ryne. William Busche and bride arrived Thursday evening from Pittsburg for a visit with his parents above town. Mrs. E. D. Moore has returned to her home in Parkersburg after a few days visit here with her sister. Miss Lura Bennett of Los Angeles, California, was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boetticher last week. Mrs. George Case of Parkersburg is here at the beside of her father J. M. Goodwin who is very poorly. Mrs. W. L. Knapp of Sistersville spent Friday here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Cunningham. A. E. Griffon, one of our prosperous merchants, was a business caller in Wheeling Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Witschy of Dairy were business callers here and at New Martinsville Friday. E.E. Campbell and Charles A. Eisenbarth of West Union were business callers here Saturday. About thirty from here went to Sistersville Monday night to hear the Victorian Serenaders. Mrs. Priscilla Farmer has returned home from a month's visit with her son at Martins Ferry. Mrs. John L. Harman and son Gordon of Marietta are guests of her parents here. George P. Goodwin is here on account of the serious illness of his father, J. M. Goodwin. E. W. Litten of Ellwood city, Pa., is spending a short vacation here with his family. Miss Ada Knight spent Sunday in Wheeling the guest of Elva Anderson. George Case was up from Parkersburg Sunday at the Goodwin home. Harry Theiss of Steubenville is the guest of his parents at this place. Lester Griffith ad sister Lucille spent Thursday evening in Hannibal. Dr. S. C. Griffith was a professional caller in Sistersville Thursday. Miss Elizabeth Garden is able to be out after a few days illness. Jacob Yoss, sr., of Morton was a business caller here Friday. Prof. W. J. Gorrell is teaching class in music at West Union. George F. Moffett was transacting business here Thursday. Eugene D. Thompson was a Sistersville visitor Thursday. Miss Margaret Dunn was shopping in Wheeling Saturday. Clyde Paden left Friday for a short visit at Alliance. Miss Ina Dunn arrived Tuesday from Woodsfield. Spirit of Democracy October 19, 1911 Sardis (crowded out of last week) A party of 25 young people enjoyed a spread at the home of Miss Jennie Litten Saturday evening, it being Miss Litten's twentieth birthday. She was the recipient of some beautiful presents. Games were indulged in until a late hour when all went to the dining room to enjoy the feast that had been prepared by the fair sex. A meeting was held at the school house Wednesday evening for the purpose of organizing an Alumni Association. Miss Hattie Thompson was elected president, Miss Ethel Winland, Secretary and Evert Busch, treasurer. Walter Stewart of this place and Miss Tillie Lohr of Trail Run were married at the home of the bride Monday evening and left the following day for their future home in Akron. Mrs. W. D. Webb, Mrs. Geo. H. Martin and Miss Evelyn Nesbitt attended a card party at Sistersville Thursday afternoon given by Mrs. E. W. Talbott. The Ladies' Aid Society celebrated the seventy first birthday anniversary of Mrs. Nancy Goodwin Wednesday afternoon at her home on Mound street. Melvin J. Paden, jr., left Friday morning for his school work in Louisville, Ky., after a months visit with relatives here and at New Martinsville. Mrs. Lizzie Gatts returned to her home at Captina, W.     3. I am researching the Hines family of Monroe Co. Va. Many say they came from Washington Co. Pa to Marshall Co. WV (Ohio Co. Va.) eventually into Monroe Co Oh. My search did not net me anything. No Hines listed in the 1810 or 1820 Federal Census I did find a Naturalization in 1841 for a Jacob Hines number after his name were 0-28 467 Does anyone know who Jacob Hines might be? Pat

Spirit of Democracy September 21, 1911 Sardis One of the most enjoyable social affairs that has been of late in Sardis, was a house picnic given Wednesday evening at the home of the Misses Lena and Clara Hess in honor of Ralph and Paul Goodwin, who leave shortly for their new home in California. Music and games were the chief diversions of the evening and the bountiful feast that has been prepared for refreshments could not have been surpassed, and to say that the Misses Hess were ideal hostesses would be putting it very mildly. All regret very much to lose the Goodwin boys, but the best wishes of all go with them to their new home. Those present: Miss Ruth Case and Russell Paden of Parkersburg, W.Va., Dr. Melvin Paden of New Mexico, Carl Denbow of Woodsfield, Herbert K. J. D. Kaho Spence Wallace John E. Sole, jr., an eight year old lad, was drowned Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the bar below town, while in bathing. His body was recovered at 8:30 Friday morning. The funeral services took place Saturday morning at Mount Olive. Dr. C. S. Griffith and wife and children left Saturday for Jerusalem to attend the funeral of his father Joseph Griffith. Misses Edith and Mildred Renshaw of Mannington, W.Va., are visiting at the home of the aunt, Mrs. Frank Renshaw. The young son of Mr. and Mrs. William Frohme, who has been so seriously ill the past week, is slightly better. Races, contests, good speaking, entertainment, music, two brass bands, two ball games and refreshments on the grounds. Spirit of Democracy June 15, 1911 Sardis (crowded out of last week) Decoration day was observed by the people as usual. This year the program consisted of patriotic recitations, songs and flag drills by the children, which were excellently rendered and received much applause. Prominent among them being the song: "The Blue and the Gray" by the girls of the intermediate room of our public school. "One Country, One Flag" by pupils from the primary room, and a flag drill by pupils of the grammar room. Rev. J.D. Kaho of Hannibal then gave an address in which he spoke for a time on the heroism of the soldiers of '61 and '65. Rev. Schultz of Sistersville then gave an address in which he vividly portrayed the scenes of the sixties, the causes of the rebellion. J. M Goodard of Woodfield, but formerly of this place, spoke briefly of his admiration of the true soldiers. The Cornet Band of Benwood furnished music. Col A. E. Boon of Zanesville, railroad promoter, was in town Thursday making arrangements for a public meeting to be held here in the near future in the interest of a proposed railroad connecting Pittsburg and Cincinnati via the Ohio valley rout and passing through Sardis. The date for the meeting has not been announced but it is understood that it will be in the very near future. Miss Nelle H. Martin, one of our most popular young ladies and Donald J. Martin of Brooksfield, Mo., were married Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian parsonage at New Martinsville. They will make their home in Brookfield, Mo., after September first. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Baxter and daughter Viola of New Matamoras spent Tuesday here with her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Watters. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schaffer and daughter Francis of Wheeling were guests of his parents here Tuesday. Mrs. W. L. Knapp and two sons of Sistersville spent a few days here last week with her parents. The commencement exercises were held in the auditorium of the M. Progressive flinch and crocinole were played, first premium being awarded to Miss Neva Gano of Wheeling and the consolation to Mrs. Anna Martin. After the games a course luncheon was served.
