Woops! I forgot to "paste" the petition I mentioned in yesterday's posting. This was a petition of Pennsylvania government to provide protection against the murderous incursions of Indians from across the Ohio River in the Northwest Territory into the frontier settlements. I assume "Middle Wheeling" was Middle Wheeling Creek, flowing through Ohio Co, (W)VA and Washington Co, PA. HISTORICAL DOCUMENT "Memorial of Inhabitants of Middle Wheeling" Petition, 1792 As indicative of the feelings entertained by the settlers on the frontier in the year 1792, and their exposed and dangerous condition, we submit the following memorial of the inhabitants of Middle Wheeling, which is a copy of the original in its orthography and style. It is headed, Memorial of Inhabitants of Middle Wheeling ": - "We the inhabitants of middle Wheeling Now in a distressed and dangerous situation Have embodied ourselves and we are two weak to make a stand without assistance. Date: 3/20/2005 6:41:49 PM Pacific Standard Time From: BettiAuer To: [email protected], [email protected] I had a delightful time reading an autobiography/family history listed below. These Millers lived in Greene or Washington Co, PA, at an early date. The author, Morris Miller, was a convert to Quakerism, and the family, along with other Quakers of the area, moved on to Ohio, where they seem to have settled somewhat closely. Once he converted, he spoke condescendently about the rest of our folks who were unapologetic heathens. Reading his first-hand story and comparing it with the 1880's county history gave me a conflicting picture of the people we descended from. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Greene or Washington Co, PA, history or to those with Millers in their genealogy. I do not remember if he mentioned his neighbors by name, but he certainly presents a sorry picture of them. A good and long read for those that like such stuff. Samuel and his wife Rebecca (King)--d/o John King) were both born in Maryland. There was a George Snyder and a Michael Snyder in Belmont Co at a very early date and are mentioned in Lorraine Indermill Quillon's "Will Abstracts, Belmont County, Ohio, Vol. A, B, and C (1810-1827), Willow Bend Books, 2003. They would have been adults during that time period. File away the information; it may help in putting clues together at a later date. Something else. I have included all the Snyders in the 1850 and 1860 Monroe Co, OH, Censuses. However, we should look closely at Guernsey and Belmont Co's for Snyders born in MD. At the moment I do not have those censuses at hand, so I have not extracted them below. But without them, we do not have a clear picture. Hopefully, someone on the Lists will be able to help us find out Snyder ancestors. Will Book Vol.-Page A-221 Estate of Joseph VanLaw 21 Mar 1815 Appraisement Report presented to court. Interments to Sep 27, 1889 were taken from The Democratic Advocate, a Carroll County newspaper. This has been the most difficult one to do as the print was set in extra-small lettering in order to squeeze it all in the allotted space. Even with the help of scanning and enlarging or with the assistance of a magnifying glass, it has been very difficult. It appears the stones were removed and replaced in rows, back to back, so it seems unlikely the tombstones are in the exact location of the graves. Daar Pat: This is my FTM Notes on Joseph Hines: GEN_WELLS_KING_FRANKLIN TWP, MONROE CO, OH_ CLEAR CREEK VALLEY PIONEERS OF THE VALLEY OF THE CLEAR FORK OF THE LITTLE MUSKINGUM Swazey village, Swazey Chapel, and the Clear Fork in Franklin Twp, Monroe County. The old town of Swazey was located in Section 18 of Township 6 and Range 7. "JACOB WISE, grandfather of Mrs. V. FARLEY of Summerville, Ohio, and of SAMUEL WISE, moved to the farm where the latter now lives on Will's Creek, two or three miles west of Lewisville, in 1820. "JJACOB WISE came from Pennsylvania. Some years later, about 1830, his son JONATHAN WISE moved to the neighborhood where he remained several years, removing finally to Jackson County, West Virginia, where he died. "Further down the valley a MR. [RICHARD] WELLS from Virginia bought land on which he settled his sons-in-law, SHADRACK KING, WILLIAM MORRIS, and SOLOMON FORSHEY. "Below here about the line between the farm of MILES MALLET and the HUGHES farm was buried the first man who died in the neighborhood. His name was JOSEPH HINES and his coffin was made of puncheons, slabs split from a tree and hewn down for the purpose. His funeral occurred in 1820. He was buried so near the creek bank that by 1848, it had washed away the earth. "JOHN ANTLE [Antil/Antill] came into the valley about 1831 and took up 80 acres of land not far from the church, Swazey Chapel [at the village of Swazey in Franklin Township, in Section 18 of Township 6 and Range 7. "JOHN B. KEAN whose children and grandchildren are to be found in the country came here about the same time from Philadelphia. He was a cabinetmaker and subsequently removed to Stafford, where he lived to a very old age, dying only a few years ago. His residence while living here was near the church. "WILLIAM CASEY joined the settlement about 1837, living here till 1862, the time of his death. "These families formed the body of the colony of pioneers in this beautiful valley. They and their families have made it what it is. This handsome church did not arise in a moment out of the ground. The wilderness was not subdued and made to bloom with beauty without many sturdy persevering blows." ___________________________________________________________________________ The Pioneers: John B. Kain: Born c1788 in South Carolina; moved to Pennsylvania; married Patience, born c1793, in Pennsylvania; then moved to Franklin Twp in Monroe Co, Ohio. Son John N. Kain lived on adjoining farm. [1850 Census, household #64/64-- Davis, p. 163]. John Antle: Born c1790 in Virginia; moved to Pennsylvania, married Elizabeth. At least four children were born in Pennsylvania. At least six were born in Ohio. Shadrack King, brother of Meshach King, son-in-law of Richard Wells. William Morris, son-in-law of Richard Wells

Surnames: Casey, Farley, Wise Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SWB.2ACE/961.1.1 Message Board Post: I haven't worked on this line for some time so I am a bit rusty. From my notes, I have William b to 1830 in Franklin, Monroe Co OH. He lists his birth as PA on 1850 and 1860 census. Samuel Casey is listed on the next page of the 1840 Franklin Twp, Monroe Co OH Census, but I have not found a connection. ********************************** Here are some other possible clues I have collected although I have not worked out how and if they are related: --Going back to 1820 John Casey and Samuel Casey are in Union Belmont Co OH. Then in 1830 there is a John Casey age 30-40 (same age as Samuel and William) in Union Belmont Co. I couldn't find Samuel in 1830. --Mary Casey b 1812 OH marries William Farley in 1832 in Monroe Co OH. He could be the brother of William Casey's wife, Nancy Farley. I also have a transcription of some info on the history of Swazey from "Nine Communities of Monroe County Ohio, A History. It mentions the "Wm. Casey joined the setlement about 1837 living there until 1862, the time of his death." --Also from the same source "Jacob Wise, grandfather of Mrs. W Farley of Summerfield, Ohio, and Samuel Wise moved to the farm where the latter now lives on Wills Creek, ? or three miles west of Lewisville, in 1820. Jacob Wise came from Pennsylvania."---so IF this Mrs W. Farley is Mary Casey that m William Farley then her grandfather was Jacob Wise, but that is a big assumption with present evidence.. Thought you might be interested in another quote from the same source "Further down the valley a Mr. Wells from Virginia bought land on which he settled his sons in law, Shedrick King, Wm. Morris, and Solomon Forshey." Would love to discuss any additonal evidence or clues that you have and see if we can make a connection. Chris
Doug, I have your Garrison Conley in Monroe County, OH and married to Rebecca Sole. Garrison is at: http://www.floop.com/fam00540.htm His father is William Conley at: http://www.floop.com/fam00181.htm William's father, Isaac is at: http://www.floop.com/fam00073.htm All are in Monroe County, OH though William and Isaac were probably born in Greene or Fayette County PA. When Monroe County was created about 1825 a whole slew of folks left Greene County, PA for Monroe County, OH where they obtained land patents. Your Conley's married into my Price, Dennis, and Hickman families, all of which migrated from Greene County, PA between 1810 and 1830. There are 21 Conleys in my files going back to 1787. Just keep clicking live links at these URLs and you'll find them all: http://www.floop.com/surnames.htm http://ww.floop.com/genealogy.htm BTW, I even show a Mozena in your line, which is very interesting: 1. JOHN2 MOZENA (NICOLAS1 MOUGINOT) was born July 04, 1749 in Mont-le-Vignoble, Province of Lorraine, France, and died February 03, 1830 in Monroe Co., OH. He married HANNAH (ANER) FOOTE March 04, 1784 in Newtown, Fairfield Co., CT, daughter of ELIJAH FOOTE and EUNICE PECK. She was born Abt. 1764 in Newtown, Fairfield, CT, and died Aft. 1805 in West Virginia or Ohio. Notes for JOHN MOZENA: John Mozena was born and baptized as Jean Mouginet on the 4th day of July 1747 in Mont le Vignoble,(Mount of the Vinyard) Lorraine, France. His parents were Nicholas Mouginet and Elizabeth Longer. His Godfather was Jean (John) Hassoux of Jeune De Choley and his Godmother was Donna Laine Longer, the spouse of Jean Hassoux. Jean (John) began his military service in France on November 20, 1773. He served under Viscounte de Cuistine (1780) and Viscounte de Rochambeau (1782) in the Compagnie Baron de Ferrete, Regiment de Saintonge which was under the command of Comte de Rochambeau. Rochambeau's expeditionary force arrived in Connecticut in July, 1780 and was put under General Washington's command. The Regiment distinguished themselves at the Battle of Yorktown, which was attacked on September 28, 1781 by French and American forces. Yorktown fell and was surrendered by General Cornwallis on October 19, 1781. This was later determined to be the turning point of the war. Jean was also listed in Philio Schuyler's Regiment of the New York Militia. His name was recorded as John Msene on a Receipt Roll. It is not known what the circumstances were or why he joined the New York Militia and remained in America instead of returning to France with his troops in 1783. After the war ended, he settled in Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut where he married Hannah(Aner) Foote, the daughter of Elijah Foote, who was also a Revolutionary War veteran. He bought two parcels of land in Newtown in 1787 and 1795. In 1800 he sold his property and set out for Virginia (which is now West Virginia) and settled in West Liberty, Va. (Now West Liberty, WVa, just east of Wheeling, WVa.) When the U. S. government granted land warrants to the Revolutionary War veterans, John moved his family to Monroe County, Ohio and took a half section of land on a ridge west of Buckhill Bottom which was approximately two miles north of Bares Landing, later renamed Baresville, and presently known as Hannibal, Ohio. The ridge he lived on was called Frenchman's Ridge, named after John, (Who was called "Frenchy" and "Frenchman") he was the only Frenchman that lived in the area. This ridge is presently now known as Long Ridge. The Mozena name became well known along the Ohio River after the family entered the business of building boats at Clarington, Ohio. Several of the boats built there that later having meaning in history were: Avalon, Ruth #2, City of Wheeling, Liberty, and the Louise. There were at least another 20 ships that John's business built, most of them were packet and tow boats hauling freight and passengers on the Ohio River and its tributaries. The "Liberty" was one of the most famous, towing a showboat with the Major Bowes Amateur Hour aboard. The "Avalon" was famous (locally) for it's 5 A.M. wake up whistle and daily trips up to Wheeling, Va. (WVa) The longest known existing boat that John built was the "Louise", she was known to be still in operation in 1969! Note: Various records show John's family name spelled a number of ways; Mysener, Msene, Mozene, Mozeny, Maginet, Maginot, Mogenot, Moginot, Mozeney, Mozseney, and lastly Mozena. Birth records of eight of John and Hannah's children were found in a church record in Newtown, Connecticut." John Mozena's grave site is located in the Ollom, (also spelled Ollum and Ullom) - Opossum Creek cemetery located south of Clarington, Ohio (Salem Twp.) on Monroe County Road 26, approximately 1.2 miles west of State Route 7. His original gravestone is engraved as follows: "In memory of John Mozeney Who departed this life Feb. 3d, 1830. In the 83rd year of his Age." His gravestone had been restored by the Ohio Historical Society and has his surname spelled "Mozena." This is the spelling that has been carried on by the modern day family. Note: Buckhill Bottom is now called Fishers Hill, it is Ohio Township Road 418. More About JOHN MOZENA: Burial: Unknown, Ollom Cemetery, Monroe County, Ohio (County Road 26) Notes for HANNAH (ANER) FOOTE: Although there is only John's grave marker in Ollom Cemetery (also known as Opossum Creek Cemetery), Hannah is reputed to be buried along side her husband.
