    3. Spirit of Democracy March 21, 1895 Deferred from last week Sardis Mrs. Bertha Dally entertained her Sunday-school class at her home Tuesday afternoon in a very delightful manner. A little crowd gathered at Floyd Gano's Tuesday evening and had a lovely time. The boats are out again and the Lexington is to run in place of the R.E. Phillips. Renting houses are scarce, and those desiring to rent had better look in time. Charles Dally was at Hannibal one day last week on business. Herald Gouding is with friends at Texas this week. Mr. Louis Stoehr came home Saturday. transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter

    3. Spirit of Democracy March 14, 1895 Sardis Prof. Walton will teach a normal this spring beginning in April. The Prof. is an excellent instructor and we take pleasure in recommending him to the teachers throughout the county. Mrs. E. McGrew and niece Miss Adda Cline will move here from Powhatan. Miss Cline is a first-class dressmaker and will follow the trade at this place. We are very sorry to state that Dr. McComas, who is well known in this county, is lying very low with consumption at his home in New Martinsville. A great deal of interest is centered on the Nesbitt well near town, which is now being pumped. They have almost enough gas to run the engine. Mrs. Mattie Martin is taking a trip to Pittsburg this week with her husband who is mate on the steamer "Keystone State." The election to decide whether this is to be made a special school district or not will take place on the 23d inst. Schools at this place will close in two weeks. A very interesting program will be given on the last day. Quite a number of K. of P.'s went to Matamoras last Thursday night to assist in organizing a lodge. Miss Lizzie Skinner of Toronto has come to spend the summer with her sister, Mrs. Henry Thompson. All the lots in the Bridgeman addition are sold. Who says Sardis is not going to boom? The trial between the Gas company and L. E. Bowen will take place Wednesday. "The Ariel Sextette" will furnish the music for the commencement exercises. Rev. Wilson preached a most excellent sermon at this place last Sabbath. Miss Ola Wetzel of New Martinsville is visiting Mrs. Dr. Haudenschield. Miss Mary Enlow of New Martinsville is visiting friends in town. The total eclipse of the moon last Sabbath night had many observers. Mrs. Phillips has returned from the oil fields and is quite indisposed. Transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter

    3. Spirit of Democracy February 28, 1895 Sardis Very interesting exercises were held in Miss Adda Knight's room on Thursday afternoon, concerning the life of the "Father of Our Country." The literary part of the program reflected great credit on both teacher and scholars. Prof. Walton gave us a good address on the beauty of the character of Washington. The Aeriel Sextette furnished the music, which was by no means the least part of the entertainment. The oil fever is getting pretty high and if there is any oil found in the Nesbitt well, which is now being tested, it will soon reach "blood heat." There has been quite a good deal of leasing in the neighborhood lately. Sardis has some lovely building sites and persons desiring to make homes for themselves will do well to investigate our advantages as regards healthfulness, excellent water, gas, and good moral people. Tom Hess has sold his property to Peter Gilman and has bought a lot in the Bridgeman addition, where he is erecting a new dwelling. Sardis now boasts of a string band "The Aeriel Sextette." Their music is quite a treat to the lovers of the same. A great quantity of ice is being taken from the river and stored. It is said to be of very fine quality, too. Our schools were closed Friday in honor of the wonderful "George," who could tell a lie but would not. Since the "backbone" of winter is broken , Sardis has taken on a little more activity. The new store room of A.C. Vetter is almost completed and is quite a nice building. Mrs. A.C. Vetter and daughter Emma are visiting at St. Marys, W.Va. Dr. Haudenschield is going to build in the Nesbitt addition. Miss Dora Nesbitt spent Sabbath with friends in Sistersville. We hear of several new houses to be built this spring. Prof. Walton spent a few days at his home last week. Quarterly meeting at Mt. Moriah last Sabbath. transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter

    1. Re: OHMONROE--A STRANGE REQUEST
    2. I HAVE A strange request for the readers in Monroe and Belmont Counties who happen to have an old hymnal hanging around the house somewhere. What I would like will not take long but it would mean so much to me if anyone of you could come up with a representative sample of a hymn written by one of my ancestors. I have several hymnbooks but none contain the hymns written by my Grandmother's brother Leonard ORANGE or her brother-in-law Leonard MOBBERLY. i AM NOT SURE THAT THE GIVEN NAMES FOR mobberly IS ABSOLUTELY correct, but if you find a hymn written by one by that surname, it will be he. My Mother who was raised in Monroe Co, when she was not in TX, was the d/o of Nora ORANGE GREEN and James Frankin GREEN and they all attended the Church of Christ which did NOT allow musical instruments orf any kind in the church. I do not remember the church name, I just remember that the song leader would get and pitch the song, start it where he thought it was a comfortable range, and soon you would hear four part harmony from every corner and bouncing off of the rafters of the church. Beautiful singing. Litlle was i to know that i would grow up to become a vocal music teacher and wish for that abiity to harmonize many times over. I knew that I could harmonize, hear a counter part, as a little girl and sang at home w/ Grandma Green and my Mother. But, I grew up thinking everyone did that. Not so! Then my grandparents moved to Ashland Co. and I attended the same kind of church back on Third and Church St. in a small community church where the song leader did the same thing as they had done in Monroe Co. Does this type of denomination still exist?? Since I was a keyboard major in college, I never attended a piano free church again. I am off of the track however. What I want is a copy of a a hymn from one of those old books that an ORANGE or MOBERLY composed. I looked in Grandma's books and I do not have any w/ those hymns in them. If you have an old hymnal, sometime could you take five minutes and look for the composer's name? I would dearly love to find a sample of their writing if any still exists. Thank you. 3. A list member ask me to look for this obit --am posting to the list in case anyone else is interested. If anyone wants the hard copy send me your snail mail and I will send. Spirit of Democracy Sept. 6, 1894 page 8 Died--Sarah M. Pratt, wife of Elmer Pratt of Bellaire, and daughter of George and Lydia Huffman, aged 32 years , 6 months, 4 days. She died at the home of James Barker of Jackson township, August 30, and was interred in the West Union cemetery August 31. Sister Pratt was the mother of two children, a boy and a girl. She has long been a victim of that dread disease consumption, but perfectly resigned she patiently waited for the summons to come that would call her from her sufferings to the "rest that remains for the people of God." She leaves a father and mother, brothers and sisters, a husband and two children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her premature death. She was a kind obedient daughter, a loving wife, never once forgetting her plighted faith to the companion of her bosom; she was a kind and attentive mother, a true christian and a zealous worker in the cause of Christ. She was loved by all who knew her and it seemed that those who knew her best loved h! er most. A noble record was hers and I would say to sorrowing ones, "dry your tears; weep not for Sarah; she has gone to her rest in peace with God and mankind; she has gone, but not lost." The funeral services were conducted by the writer assisted by Rev. Mr. Ward of Antioch. I spoke to a large audience from Psalms 30:5. May Heaven's blessings be with the bereaved companion and God's watchful care and protection be over the motherless children. D.W. Harkins hope this helps Sara Richardson Kelly

    1. Evelyn Huffman
    2. Evelyn was the daughter of Morris & Elsie Huffman. She was born in Sardis 31 Jan 1911. Her parents moved a few years later to Marietta where she was a telephone operator in 1930. I know she was married later, but do not know his name. Can anyone help? Thanks, Gene Huffman
