    3. Spirit of Democracy October 3, 1895 Sardis Quite a number of neighbors and relatives met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Harmon on the evening of the 25th ult. to make festive their silver wedding. The string band furnished the music for the evening and the occasion was a very happy remembrance of a wedding twenty five years ago. The presents showed the esteem in which they are held by their friends. All returned to their homes hoping that the benedictions of the same kind Father will be over them always as in the past. Sardis was well represented at Woodsfield last Saturday on account of the suit of Tom Bowen against the New Martinsville Gas company. The suit was postponed, however, till next term of court. The Jr. Epworth league will hold a Harvest Home entertainment in the church next Thursday evening, October 10, which no doubt will be a very unique affair. Everybody invited. Mr. Peter Thompson, who has been visiting his aged parents here after an absence of eighteen years, will soon leave for his home in California. Rev. Mr. Wilson has been returned to this charge for another year, which we think will accord with the wishes of this community. Our public schools will open next Monday with Robert Martin as principal and Misses Adda Knight and May Harman assistants. Dr. Vosburg of Jamestown, N.Y., is quartered at the O'Neill house. We do know whether he has located permanently or not. The work on the Goddard oil well is being pushed as rapidly as possible. No doubt Sardis will yet be "in the oil field." The "medicine show" which has been here for the past two weeks disbanded Saturday and scattered to the four winds. Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Griffith are the happy parents of a lovely little girl. transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter

    3. Spirit of Democracy August 15, 1895 Sardis When we received the news of our defeat in our local option election two weeks ago our hearts cried out "how long O Lord, how long must we be cursed with a curse!" but since we have heard of the grand victory of Perry township, we feel like throwing our hats in the air and singing the doxology. Oil is the topic of conversation. Although our people have very little invested, we realize that it has been and is of great value to our business interests. Quite a number of our townsmen have found work in the field and business in general has received a stimulus on account of it. We understand that there is to be a prohibition picnic over the river in Paden's valley some time in September. Ex Governor St. John of Kansas is to be one of the speakers if he can be secured. Everything is booming in our little town. New houses going up, merchants busy, landlords happy and the livery business taxed to its utmost. Miss Emma Hotchins, nee Davenport, of Des Moines, Iowa, who was visiting friends, has gone to Matamoras as the guest of her aunt, Mrs. John Hare. We are astonished at the amount of travel through Sardis, but when we remember that all roads lead to "Dogskin" our wonder ceases. Our pastor, Rev. Mr. Wilson, has gone to Mt. Lake Park on account of asthma. His son Ernest will fill the pulpit in his absence. We now find Mr. and Mrs. Will Goodwin "at home" in their elegant new house which they recently erected. A number of our people attended the funeral of the late W. Musser whose sudden demise we deplore. Mrs. John Goodwin, jr., and two children, are visiting friends in Belmont and Cumberland, Ohio Misses India Witten, Adda Knight and Erma Vetter are spending a week at Epworth park. Mrs. Abbie Bercle and children of Wheeling are visiting relatives here and at Trail Run. The heavy rains of the past week have made the heart of man rejoice and be glad. Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Litten of Sistersville called on friends here yesterday. Miss Ella Richardson has gone to Pennsylvania to visit her son Eugene. Mr. D. W. Mozena and wife of Martins' Ferry are visiting friends here. Frank Knight is clerking for Hubbard & Witten in the oil field. Miss Mattie Anderson of Wheeling is at her home here. transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter

    3. Spirit of Democracy July 18, 1895 Sardis The storm Monday evening was quite a scare, especially to those that took a buggy ride up the road, and go caught in it, but we were very thankful for the rain. This year apples are so plentiful that we bite a dozen before we get one to suit us; last year we would have been glad for any kind. Mrs. Jesse Davis and two charming little daughters of Woodland, W.Va. are guests of her parents. Mr. Deiter is having a fine residence built, which will be an improvement to our city. We are glad to say that the river has raised, and some of the large boats are out again. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hall, a bouncing baby boy. Sammy is so very proud. Ed Fry has some very nice watermelons. Girls, do the boys know it? George Soals moved his family in the Thompson house this week. Samuel Hofer is having a fine fence put around his residence. Mrs. James Watson and children of Parkersburg are here again. Judge Driggs of Bridgeport was here a few days this week. Will Stoeher was at New Matamoras one day last week. Miss Carrie Heartleap, who has been the happy guest of Mrs. Flora Goodwin, returned to her home at Hannibal Friday.
