    1. Re: OHMONROE-ORANGE FAMILY ON CREIGHTON RIDGE
    2. i JUST FOUND OUT ON sUNDAY THE NAME OF THE ROAD WHERE MY GR-GRANDMOTHER ORANGE HAD LIVED. I KNEWMY SON HAD BEEN THERE AND I FINALLY MANAGED TO FIND OUT. HE TOLD ME THEY ALL LIVED IN THAT AREA AND WENT TO A SMALL CHURCH ON THAT SAME ROAD OR NEARBY HE THOUGHT. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS ROAD AND/OR FAMILY? Thomas Sampson ORANGE was my gr-Grandfather whom I never met. He died young because he had been on the roof repairing it after a storm, it started to rain, and he was coming down w/ measles. He didn't know that getting wet and chilled would be that harmful to him but he died of pneumonia/consumption as I understand it. His parents were John Calvin and Isabella LOGAN ORANGE from Fayette Co, PA. John died in the Civil War. Isabella scraped and scrimped and somehow kept the payments on their land going. When it was paid off, no record could be found to give her the deed. Things looked bad until Pres. MOnroe and a special session of Congress took care of it and the poor widow who had so little at least owned her land. I do not know if that was the same piece of land that Thomas lived on Creighton Ridge or not. Isabella raised her family alone. Then, history repeated itself for Thomas's young wife also. She was Mary Ellen WINLAND, d/o of John WINLAND from the line of old Heinrich WINDLANDT of Germany who brought his large family to USA to PA. His wife died leaving many young children. I believe that it was Heinrich who was fortunate enough to find another wife and then, he died. I often wonder who raised the children of that family. A new second wife certainly got more than she bargained for. When you think of the hard lives our ancestors lived under less than the best of conditions, you realize that it is small wonder that wives died young after bearing a dozen children. My grandmother on the GREEN side of the family died at 38 after having 11 children. The oldest sister stayed home, even after marrying, and helped her father raise the huge family. On the other hand, as exhibited in my ORANGE family, the husband died young, leaving the young widow with a huge family to raise and only some land to farm for making a living. So, you see that I have much local color about my Monroe families, but I would like to be able to place them on the map. I remember the house that Grandmother ORANGE lived in where she raised her only son, Leonard, and his five sisters, including my grandmother, Nora. I remember walking that dusty road to a TEE where we turned left and went to an old country store which sold ice crea! Not apt to forget that spot. I am sure all of the buildings are probably gone. I remember family reunions at her house. I know that the country store was own by two families: GREEN and NICHOLSON, long before I came along. My son thought their church was nearby and many of the three families mentioned in this novelette are buried in the churchyard. Would anyone be able to help me identify that church? I would presume that they were either Presbyterian or Church of Christ, the one w/o musical instruments. That would be the church for which Leonard ORANGE and his brother-in-law by the surname of Mobberly wrote/composed hymns. About a month ago, I sent in a query about old hymn books with these songs in them. However, I did not know where they lived or which church they might have attended then. Perhaps knowing Creighton Ridge will help. Now, how does CREIGHTON fit into this picture? Well, I just found out a few months ago that my last gr-gr-grandmother was Sarah CREIGHTON who married Joseph MOOSE. She was born in PA in 1801, moved to Monroe Co where in 1825 she married Joseph She died after him in 1875. I am searching for her parents but have no idea how to find her. I need the name for mtDNA testing. My line goes like this: PETTY (me), GREEN, ORANGE, WINLAND, MOOSE (Maria), CREIGHTON, (Sarah) and there the surnames come to a screeching halt. Does anyone know the early CREIGHTON family who came to Monroe Co and probably settled the ridge? I know there was a MOOSE ridge somewhere near by. OK, all of you Monrovians, I have given you plenty to chew on. I am hopeful now that I have some more info, someone can help me.Grateful for any little hints. Marjory PETTY PECK Austen Incidentally, I have written a book about my childhood memories and many of the people above are discussed in it. 3. My 2xgreat-grandparents were: Thomas DRAKE & Hannah BROWNING. They were married in Harrison Co.,OH.on 25 Jan.1837. I'm looking for information on who their parents & siblings were. Thomas was born 1810 MD. & Hannah was born circa 1815 MD.or OH. I believe now that Thomas's parents were: William DRAKE & Mary?. They moved to Harrison Co.,OH.in 1819 from Bedford Co.,PA. I believe Hannah had at least one sister Cassandra BROWNING. Cassandra also married in Harrison Co. in 1841 to Alfred CALVERT. Thomas & Hannah DRAKE moved from Harrison Co.after the 1840 census to Monroe Co.,OH. where they finished having their 10 children. Their names were: William,Benjamin,John,Thomas Carter(my line),George Washington,Mary,Wesley,Frederick,Cassandra & Esther Ann DRAKE. Circa 1869 most of this family moved to Wapello Co.,IA.where they appear in the 1870 census.I believe Thomas & Hannah DRAKE died in Wapello Co.,IA. but I don't have any proof yet. Thanks for any help! Sincerely, Pam Drake in IN. [email protected]
