    1. Re: [OHMIAMI] Pension Files
    2. Again from all the time I spent hunting files at the Archives. Sometimes I would pull a file and copy a lot of pages only to find when I got home that I had cut off a word I needed - you have a time limit and always trying to get as much done as possible during my turn. Anyway when I went back in 3 months to pull the file again I was told it wasn't where it belonged. This went on for some time and finally a year later it was back there. Now for the reasons: 1. It seems to take them a long time to get them filed back after being pulled. The ones I needed a second time always showed up but it took almost a year. 2. Sometimes they are out with students in the room doing projects. That happened to me one day and I was not real happy. The teacher brought in a dozen either high school or college students and they were given a list of names to pull and copy. They monopolized the machines and they weren't even looking for anyone special. 3. Sometimes a researcher has a lot out as for a project. When you visit the room, you are only allowed one file at a time - yet I think these kids had more. 5. They now only let you have 20 files a day, it might be less. It was 24 and I ordered them and then had 2 days of work so perhaps someone else is working with them that day. I don't think they have the time nor the staff to keep track of files that people are waiting on. You just have to keep submitting your request. Some are truly lost - stolen I think. Others are mixed with someone else's file either from the past or a researcher project. I have found lots of papers in the wrong person's file and I don't know how long it takes them to find the right file and straighten out the error. Then there are the files with letters such as C, etc and not just numbers. Those files are not at the National Archives but at local veteran administrations and I am not sure exactly how to get them, but have to learn as have a growing list I need. The Archives are a very busy place with so many different types of research going on. I love being there and the research room was put on the National Historical Building or something like that and they couldn't turn this gorgeous research room into offices like they intended. Yeah. Paneled walls and carved molding. The did upgrade it with new research desk, lamps and an electric outlet at each desk. Enough rambling. Just remember they have so many files and it does disappear at times. Think of Sandy Berger who walked out with all those papers from the Clinton administration stuffed in his pants and socks. He got off with a fine and a 3 year exile from the Archives. I would be in jail if I tried that. Jerilyn **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards.
