Hi, Thankyou for your reply Sharon. I am researching both my husband's family and my family in Montgomery, Butler , Preble, Darke, and Miami Counties. We have a long history in this area. I don't know if Joshua Cox is related to John Cox of Miami Co., but on my husband's side we have a Daniel Curtner bn. circa 1763 in Guilford Co., NC married to a Catherine Coble bn. circa 1758 same place. Their son Daniel marries a Nancy. I believe that she may be Nancy Cox and that they are listed in the 1850 census of MI. Co. There is a will extract for John Cox in MI. Co. that lists heirs: wife Susannah, eldest son Joseph's children and Henry,John,George,Nancy(Curtner)Cox,Sarah(Sally)(Conaway)Cox,Jesse,Catharine and William. I believe this family maybe my Coxes. My grandmother Estelle Wright's maiden name was Cox. Her husband,my grandfather was of the Union Township MICO. Wrights. Estelle's father was John Henry Cox in DKCO married to Sallie Henninger. John's father was George Cox bn.circa 1819 OH married to Julia Ann Kitchin DEL or NJ, they did not originate in DKCO. Julia came with family, Enoch Kitchin. They are married in the 1850 census VB Township DKCO. John Cox bn. circa 1819 NC is in the 1860 census Greenville DKCO married to Frances is father to 4, his two youngest boys are George W. and Thomas T. Cox. John's oldest son William H. Cox was 19 in 1860. In the 1880 census George Cox VB DKCO lists son John and nephew George. In the 1870 census also with John in school and his cousin George working the farm. They were both 14 years old in 1870. In the 1850 census for Union Twp. MICO Jesse Cox bn. circa 1821 OH is married to Catherine bn. circa 1827 OH and father to Rachael,Issac,John,Ahyah, and Susannah. In the 1870 census for VB Twp. DKCO Jesse Cox bn. circa 1818 OH married to Catherine bn. circa 1825 OH is the father of Sarah, Mary, Martha, Nancy, Jesse, and Eddie.Listed with them but not in the family group is Thomas age 12; working on the farm. In the 1875 atlas there is an A.H. Cox in Jaysviille that came from Miami Co to Darke Co and a Jesse Cox that came from Miami County to Darke County. Did Jesse move his family from MICO to DKCO; are these the same people? Is Jesse taking care of his brother John's boy, Thomas? Does Thomas have to earn his keep on the farm while his cousins go to school? Is George taking care of John's boy George? Is he working for his keep while his cousin John gets to go to school. These two boys are both the same age,14. Are these boys orphans and where are the rest of their family? I have William Cox 152nd Inf. Co. I , buried in Old Abbottsville Cemetary VB Twp.DKCO. Records indicate he was born in 1830. Is this the youngest brother of John, Jesse and George of MICO? Van Buren Township records indicate they held important positions in the community and were very active there. They were holding offices, planning a cemetary and a school. There are records of them being paid for hauling gravel and other township work. Thomas grew up and married Mattie. He was in two censuses as an adult; that I find so far. We moved to Wisconsin to pursue healthcare for my daughter Sarah. First we moved to Cleveland for a lung transplant and then Wisconsin. I spent the last six months of her life with her in Chcago waiting for another transplant. She was brilliant, kind, funny and a fighter. She wanted to experience all that life has to offer. She did not want to be forgotten. Today is her birthday, she would have been twenty. She had cystic fibrosis. I am studying the past to understand the present and to put her in her place in history. Cystic fibrosis didn't have a name when some of my ancestors were burying one child after another. I think I see pockets of it in my genealogy. I have a greater appreciation for the tenacity and strength of character of our ancestors thanks to my new hobby and it is reconnecting me to people and places. I have been rather isolated for a while and need motivation to adjust to my new life. My daughter Grace is realizing that she is not alone without her sister as we share this journey to visit relatives back home and get pictures and letters in the mail. Even my husband William, I did not think he would be too interested, is now asking me regularly what I have found out. If you like to read about genealogy I suggest a fascinating book, Mr. and Mrs. Prince by Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, Harper Collins Press, 2008. It is about a black family in Vermont and Mass. starting in 1705 and details the research to uncover their story. Abijah Prince started as a slave in New England where slavery was thriving at the time, served in the French and Indian Wars and gained his freedom. His free sons served in the Revolutionary War. You can imagine how difficult it was to find information. It is amazing how much is preserved as they search and sift. I look forward to coming home in the spring and spending the summer visiting and sluething around for more clues. I have very far back genealogy on them if you are interested. Sharon jeanne hime wrote: My family ties to Miami County are: Cox, Wright and in Darke County and Miami: Haworth, Penny, Eck, Kitchin and Curtner. Darke County Hollinger and Henninger. In Montgomery, Preble and Butler too: Paxton and Hime in the southern Counties. My Cox, Wright and Kitchin lines seem to come to Van Buren Township Darke county from Miami County. I am currently trying to tie George, John, and Jesse Cox to John and Susannah Cox of Miami County based on a deed extract. My Wrights are the Wrights on Wright Road just outside of Laura. The cemetary is still there and cared for by family on the old abandoned family farm. Thankyou for sharing.
