Hi, I use family search and ancestry.com. I have gotten alot of free information from these sites and others. I have never subscribed to one of these sites. If I want more information I use the library that I support in my community or I go to a local historical society library or museum. They are very gracious and open to sharing. If I want to register my ancestors as a first family in that county, I join that society; I at least try to leave a small donation to support their efforts. I use a PAF file to organize and manage my family information. I downloaded this PAF file for free from familysearch. I back up my file on a disc regularly to protect my work from any difficulties with my computer. Volunteers staff alot of these local institutions. Alot of the information on genealogy was done by these tireless people long before I became interested in genealogy and I am sincerely grateful to them for preserving my heritage. I agree that the LDS websites can seem like a juggernaut but I saw on a program on TV that they have information on millions of names. It must be very costly to gather and preserve all of that information. To manage it and make it available to everyone in so many ways seems like an impossible task. I have not put any information out there yet but I will when I am more confident in my own information. I know that I will be responsible for the content and I don't want to make any mistakes. I know that people will look at my file and possibly contact me with new information, possible corrections or questions. This can only make my information more accurate and complete. With such a wide audience who knows what connections I might make. Each of us is an individual. Its no big deal, do it however it suits you. Just have fun. I don't put my info on ancestry or rootsweb anymore because if you change your e-mail address or password, you can't get into your pages to edit and correct them. I learned that long before ancestry owned rootsweb. But for research, especially the censuses and newspapers, ancestry is the best. When I was a "newbie", I posted my genealogy on rootsweb and hadn't documented all of it yet. Later, as I gained experience, I knew that I had a lot of errors in it and I had a new e-mail address and couldn't get in to correct my pages. I contacted rootsweb and told them the situation and their attitude was "tough luck" and nothing has ever been done. I can always tell when I look at others' pages who got their information out of my old tree and I cringe when I see the incorrect info. I don't want to mislead anyone but can't get it changed. When possible, I e-mail the person or put a post em with the correction. My suggestion, though, is this. If you want to put your info online, then put it on tribalpages. Their websites are beautiful and have great features and are free and very simple to do and if you don't want just anyone looking at them, you can set them so that others have to get a password from you, although, I prefer that anyone researching my families be able to assess my site. The wonderful thing is, though, in addition to having an extremely nice website is that you can go in and edit, correct, add, delete, or change your information anytime. You are in complete control. If you want to see a couple of tribalpages websites or get your own, look below my name for mine. Hi Debbie, You do not need an email address to sign in and edit your WorldConnect gedcom at RootsWeb. All you need is your user code or ID that you chose when you first uploaded your gedcom and your password which you also chose. The email address is changed in the edit process. Just choose advance options. If you lost or misplaced your user code and password, then I would expect that the people and RootsWeb would not be able to help you since they do not have that information, only the submitter does. Bottom line, when you first upload your gedcom to WorldConnect, write down your user code and password in a SAFE place. I keep mine in my agenda. I hope this is of some help and that you are able to update your incomplete information. Apparently, you did at one time as I wrote them and phoned them and was told both times that my user code and password was invalid because it did not match the e-mail address those were assigned to and that it could not be changed. Debbie, have you tried contacting the helpdesk at RootsWeb (by email)? They are very helpful there. If you can provide enough information to them to prove the tree(s) is/are yours, there should be some way they could help you. If I were you I would give it another try... what do you have to lose? Good advice, Jean! Linda in Costa Rica Monroe County, NY Records and Family Genealogy http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monroenys/ Monroe County, NY History http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~monroenys/ ----- Original Message ----- From: jeanne hime To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com Sent: 12 February, 2008 11:32 PM Subject: [OHMIAMI] Genealogy research sites.
