Linda, Yes, genealogical information, as much of this puzzle as I have stuck together so far, mostly with a lot of help. That is what I was trying to figure out. The family moved into Miami Co.(not exactly sure where other than Miami Co., have not figured that out yet) from TN. Then migrated to Preble Co. (Lewisburg, Eaton, New Hope) (with some probably in Darke Co. also) and stayed put for a while. Then wandered off to Richland Co., OH for 5 years then over here to Allen Co., OH for the last 37 years or so. That should give a small idea of the dilemma. Apparently, a lot of Ohioans went to Illinois and some later returned to Ohio. Jana Broglin does a lecture on this called Transplanted Buckeyes, Ohioans : Their Migration to Illinois and Settlement in Illinois. She will be presenting her lecture at the Sept. 21 meeting of the Allen County Genealogy Society in Lima, Ohio. The meeting is open to the public and we would be happy to have any of you who can attend as our guests. Those unable to attend may urge their local genealogy society to book Jana or check her website to see where else she will be presenting this lecture. Those Census records that show Mary Brown in Jonathan Tucker's household in 1850 and 1860 and the 1840 record that shows her next door to him plus his marriage and one child, Nathaniel, who apparently served in the Civil War are all I know about Jonathan. Could you tell me who his other children were. The Tucker names you refer to must all be Jonathan's descendants -- I do not recognize them. Would you like info about Jacob's line in Indiana? Getting a picture of the cradle sounds like it would be complicated. It would be wonderful if you could do it. The chair is not so hard. Don't think I can send it via email ( my picture skills are lacking), tho some of my family might make it possible. My genealogical info is all on PAF (Personal Ancestor File) which I got shortly after it was made available by the Mormons. It was a very modest price at that time, and now it can also be downloaded for no charge. Perhaps not all is on PAF for I have correspondence, copies, and even pictures in the TUcker notebook. If you are not sure who to contact at the museum, then I would address my letter to the director of the museum. As for your genealogy, you can give copies to LDS, the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, who will give you a bound copy of your genealogy for yourself (contact them for information. It may also be on their website.), any county state or regional library, archives, or genealogy society would be happy to have copies. There are plenty of places to put your genealogy. I've seen several people mention that their families went west to IN or IL. I wondered if anyone knows a specific reason. Some of my Wyatt ancesters moved from Shelby County, OH to Bunker Hill, IN in 1871. My Smith great grandparents and all their children (both single and married) moved from Piqua, Miami County, OH to Harvey, IL around 1890. Some of the Wyatts eventually ended up in the Chicago area as well. I assume the move to IL was to get jobs with the railroad (as several of them did), however I wondered if there was another reason people were leaving Shelby and Miami counties during this time period. Does anyone have any experience with museums? Our family made some donations to the museum down in Huestons' Woods State Park, but I have never been back to check on if they still have the items, if they were put on display and so forth. We donated my Great Grandmother Erminnie Carl Mitchell's wedding gown as she was married in that gown in the house that the museum is now in. There were other items donated at the same time that they seemed to be interested in, but again, I have NOT been back to check and see if any of it was displayed and this was all done before 1974, so none of it might matter any longer. Also, where do you put this information for safe keeping? I have no children, two nephews and a niece, none with the Tucker name, and I am not sure how interested they will be in preserving it. I have heard that you can turn it in to the LDS Church, but I have never heard how to do this and I have NOT been able to get back information that I know was compiled on the Mitchell side of the family mentioned above by a cousin of mine who did that work. I can't seem to find anyone who will tell me how to get a copy of that information back to our branch of the family, so I am hesitant to deposit any information there. Don't know what has me thinking this stuff today, I hope they are suitable topics for the Miami Co. board. Thanks, Tim Tucker
Mary Ann or anyone, I was given some hints on trying to trace back through the Friends Church, but never had much luck with figuring out how to do this. Is there a book or a write-up somewhere on the net on how to do this? I often feel like a bull blundering around in a china shop, afraid that I will insult someone or upset them by accident without even knowing I did it. I am, unfortunately, not much of a real geneologist, I just like to corral, organize and preserve facts before they are lost forever, which I have been doing as best I can. I was originally given some of this information by a distant relative of some kind who found us by putting an ad in the little paper in Lewisburg, OH, where WB Tucker resided for some time and my grandmother met my grandfather Robert K. Tucker. A friend of hers saw the ad and sent it to us after my grandmother died. This gentleman lived in northern Indiana, somewhere near Ft. Wayne (I hve somewhat more detailed info but it is several layers down in boxes right now and I can't shift enough stuff to get to them. Never heard of this Louis Jones person, though we lived in New Hope, OH for several years and my Grandmother and great aunt on the Tucker side lived there until they died, Aunt Nell in 1972 and Grandmother in 1974. That is about 8 or 9 miles from Richmond on US 35. > I would be happy to trade a picture of the chair known in my family as > the 'Grandmother Brown Chair' > for a picture of the Tucker cradle. > I will check and see if I can find and scan in a picture of the cradle. If I can not, when it gets warmer I will find someone who can climb and get it down from the top of the garage, assemble it and take a picture of it. That cradle started a fight between Marjorie Nell Tucker Renner and Laura Jane McConnaughey Tucker (Joe William Tucker's wife) that still had not been been settled at the time of Aunt Nell's death. Anything you would be interested in sharing, I would be interested in picking up to add to my computer files (I use Brother's Keeper for lack of any information as to anything better out there at the price - free to private users). Hi Tim, You asked: Also, where do you put this information for safe keeping? Do you mean genealogical information? If that's what you mean and your lines are from Miami County I would suggest the Flesh Public Library and also the Historical Society. Anyone interested would then be able to find the information there. I hope that I have answered understood your question correctly! Don't know what has me thinking this stuff today, I hope they are suitable topics for the Miami Co. board. Pam, are you interested in anyone who was buried in Wood Cemetery and moved to Forest Hill? The names of Adam Furrow and Mary Graham Furrow his wife are missing from your list. Adam was the father of Jeremiah Furrow (1804-1890), grandfather of Alonzo Furrow (1842-1908). My relationship is to Mary Graham, Adam's wife. Her stone is almost unreadable. Hi Debbie, Yes, I also have a family line that moved on to Illinois and a few members came back and forth or moved on to other states. I also have lines that moved up fron North Carolina. I think some of this movement had to do with their church affiliations. Some churches were very strict about your movements. They would require a certificate to move from one church to another. Also the opportunity to settle land and clear it as your own at a good price was an incentive, as the territories opened up and were settled people speculated on land development. Some people didn't like the rules and taxation that came with civilized society and kept moving to a new frontier. Poliical, economic, social and religious reasons always move people around. Tim, I have reviewed some of my notes on the Tucker family. It was Jonathan, your ancestor, that had his mother, Mary Brown, in his household in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. In 1840 she apparently lived next door to him. She died in 1865 according to my records at age 89. So it was your ancestor, Jonathan, who took care of his mother, Mary Castner Tucker Brown, while my ancestor, Jacob, moved with his family to Cass Co. Indiana. The indication that Mary's husband Abraham, b. 1773, died in Warren Co. comes from a letter from Gale Honeyman dated 19 Aug. 1977, in which he describes what appear to be loose papers filed in the administration of Abraham's estate. One of these was a note dated 7-16-1808 that appointed his brother Joseph as his lawful attorney to sell his land and chattles in Washington Co. TN. This noted indicated he was then in Warren Co. The estate was indeed administered in Miami Co. It was appraised 6-15-1810. There are tax records in Washington Co. TN for Joseph Tucker as early as 1792. Abraham does not appear on the tax list until 1797 although Elizabeth, his wife, paid tax in 1795. Abraham, husband of Elizabeth, was deceased at the time of the marriage of his daughter Margaret to Aaron Coppock in 1797. There is a record in the minutes of the Buckingham MM in Bucks Co. PA of the marriage of Abraham Tucker and Elizabeth Michener declaring their intentions for marriage in September and October of 1854. The marriage was completed before November 4, 1754. John Dyer's Diary includes the entry that says Abraham Tucker and his family "moved for York over the Susquehena" in 1776. Another entry says that Abraham had a son named Abraham in 1773. Where was Abraham Sr. between 1776 and 1792? Possibly York Co., though I have found no records there. I have found a tax record there for Jacob Castner father of Abraham Jr.'s wife Mary. Jacob Carsoner (the name has many spelling variations) appeared on the tax records of Washington Co. TN in 1797. I have never found a marriage record for Abraham Jr. and Mary Castner. There is a deed in Washington Co. between Jacob Carsoner and Abraham Tucker both of Washington Co. in which Abraham purchases 106 acres for some $300 from Jacob "where the said Abraham now liveth". As to the Tuckers before Abraham Sr. born supposedly in 1729, I have found nothing conclusive. Louis Jones, last of Richmond, Indiana, did a great deal of research on them without finding anything conclusive, either. Abraham Sr. was supposedly from Bristol Co. Mass. There were Tuckers there. Historically it is true that Quakers did move out of Mass. where they were persecuted and into PA. There were several Tuckers in Bucks Co., but I have never been able to connect any of them to our Abraham Sr. I would be happy to trade a picture of the chair known in my family as the 'Grandmother Brown Chair' for a picture of the Tucker cradle. Hi Again Suszh! Was just reading your reply and the mention of your N.O. Billet. Althought I despise the term "deaf and dumb", I know that in those days, it was the common use. But what another similarity we have. I am Deaf. Louie was full hearing. Our older girl, Jill (now 38 in May) was born full hearing, but the younger girl, Tim's Mom Kate was born very deaf. When she was 5, she was diagnosed with an excess of fluid blocking her hearing, and had tubes put in her ears. It gave her hearing, but the 1st year or so, she had quite a time with all the change and confusion caused by the sudden hearing. She is now 35 and for years has heard just like Jill. All my grandsons are hearing as well. What was the full name of the deaf Billet, do you recall? Unless they had them and were distroyed by the Katrina, there may be Deaf Annals there and he may be in them. Friday I went over to Alcony. I took a bunch of pics, the Church in particular. And my friend, Marlene Ishmael who owns the shop "Plain N' Simple" there in Alcony showed me the new Elizabeth Twp. historical book the genealogy people there put out. She said there are Saylors all over the place, showed me the names page and it was full of them. She dosen't know where the Saylor Cem. is, but I intend to find it! On one map I have it shows Alcony as being in Miami Co.--my county. But it might actually be in Clark Co. I'll find out. At any rate, up in Troy--4 mi north of us, 6 mi west of Alcony--there is a fabulous genealogy/history library. Also the county court house are just catycorner accross the street, so I can do some prowling around. When you get a chance, give me the names and anything you can think of about them in the area. I'm a digger. It may take a bit of time, but we'll get something. Is your friend Miriam Schindler still alive and in Alcony? Maybe I could meet her and together we could dredge up something useful or something not yet found! I'm really sorry about your husband's cancer. I hope he has good treatment. How old is he? I'll put him on our prayer list at church if you'd like. Could you give me your regular mailing addresse. I saw a small cute thing at Marlene's that I think must belong to you! I just need to send it. Well, I gotta go do some stuff--you know how that goes! Say, I was only in Alcony for about an hour, and didn't get in the Church, but Maybe this week, I can get over there earlier in the day. Tim is 15 1/2, so getting home without me there is not a problem. We leave notes and all and he's really reliable. I'll write more real soon! Bye for now! Hi, Thankyou for your reply Sharon. I am researching both my husband's family and my family in Montgomery, Butler , Preble, Darke, and Miami Counties. We have a long history in this area. I don't know if Joshua Cox is related to John Cox of Miami Co., but on my husband's side we have a Daniel Curtner bn. circa 1763 in Guilford Co., NC married to a Catherine Coble bn. circa 1758 same place. Their son Daniel marries a Nancy. I believe that she may be Nancy Cox and that they are listed in the 1850 census of MI. Co. There is a will extract for John Cox in MI. Co. that lists heirs: wife Susannah, eldest son Joseph's children and Henry,John,George,Nancy(Curtner)Cox,Sarah(Sally)(Conaway)Cox,Jesse,Catharine and William. I believe this family maybe my Coxes. My grandmother Estelle Wright's maiden name was Cox. Her husband,my grandfather was of the Union Township MICO. Wrights. Estelle's father was John Henry Cox in DKCO married to Sallie Henninger. John's father was George Cox bn.circa 1819 OH married to Julia Ann Kitchin DEL or NJ, they did not originate in DKCO. Julia came with family, Enoch Kitchin. They are married in the 1850 census VB Township DKCO. John Cox bn. circa 1819 NC is in the 1860 census Greenville DKCO married to Frances is father to 4, his two youngest boys are George W. and Thomas T. Cox. John's oldest son William H. Cox was 19 in 1860. In the 1880 census George Cox VB DKCO lists son John and nephew George. In the 1870 census also with John in school and his cousin George working the farm. They were both 14 years old in 1870. In the 1850 census for Union Twp. MICO Jesse Cox bn. circa 1821 OH is married to Catherine bn. circa 1827 OH and father to Rachael,Issac,John,Ahyah, and Susannah. In the 1870 census for VB Twp. DKCO Jesse Cox bn. circa 1818 OH married to Catherine bn. circa 1825 OH is the father of Sarah, Mary, Martha, Nancy, Jesse, and Eddie.Listed with them but not in the family group is Thomas age 12; working on the farm. In the 1875 atlas there is an A.H. Cox in Jaysviille that came from Miami Co to Darke Co and a Jesse Cox that came from Miami County to Darke County. Did Jesse move his family from MICO to DKCO; are these the same people? Is Jesse taking care of his brother John's boy, Thomas? Does Thomas have to earn his keep on the farm while his cousins go to school? Is George taking care of John's boy George? Is he working for his keep while his cousin John gets to go to school. These two boys are both the same age,14. Are these boys orphans and where are the rest of their family? I have William Cox 152nd Inf. Co. I , buried in Old Abbottsville Cemetary VB Twp.DKCO. Records indicate he was born in 1830. Is this the youngest brother of John, Jesse and George of MICO? Van Buren Township records indicate they held important positions in the community and were very active there. They were holding offices, planning a cemetary and a school. There are records of them being paid for hauling gravel and other township work. Thomas grew up and married Mattie. He was in two censuses as an adult; that I find so far. We moved to Wisconsin to pursue healthcare for my daughter Sarah. First we moved to Cleveland for a lung transplant and then Wisconsin. I spent the last six months of her life with her in Chcago waiting for another transplant. She was brilliant, kind, funny and a fighter. She wanted to experience all that life has to offer. She did not want to be forgotten. Today is her birthday, she would have been twenty. She had cystic fibrosis. I am studying the past to understand the present and to put her in her place in history. Cystic fibrosis didn't have a name when some of my ancestors were burying one child after another. I think I see pockets of it in my genealogy. I have a greater appreciation for the tenacity and strength of character of our ancestors thanks to my new hobby and it is reconnecting me to people and places. I have been rather isolated for a while and need motivation to adjust to my new life. My daughter Grace is realizing that she is not alone without her sister as we share this journey to visit relatives back home and get pictures and letters in the mail. Even my husband William, I did not think he would be too interested, is now asking me regularly what I have found out. If you like to read about genealogy I suggest a fascinating book, Mr. and Mrs. Prince by Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, Harper Collins Press, 2008. It is about a black family in Vermont and Mass. starting in 1705 and details the research to uncover their story. Abijah Prince started as a slave in New England where slavery was thriving at the time, served in the French and Indian Wars and gained his freedom. His free sons served in the Revolutionary War. You can imagine how difficult it was to find information. It is amazing how much is preserved as they search and sift. I look forward to coming home in the spring and spending the summer visiting and sluething around for more clues. I am currently trying to tie George, John, and Jesse Cox to John and Susannah Cox of Miami County based on a deed extract. My Wrights are the Wrights on Wright Road just outside of Laura. The cemetary is still there and cared for by family on the old abandoned family farm. Thankyou for sharing. I know this list is not meant for this thing, but former Miami list member Scott Nicodemus lost another tragic death in his family (his wife) this week. Please give your prayers and blessings for his family. He already lost 2 children and rest of family before. --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
Dear listers: I don't know if I can be helpful, since I use the DOS version of PAF. I tried the Windows version once, but didn't like it and went back to my original "old reliable" program. In my PAF, I can either click on "searcH" in the "options" at the bottom of the screen, or press "H". That gives me a new screen into which I can type as much information as I want to search on. I usually search for somebody by name, i.e. their surname and/or first name. Just for fun, I typed ",Miami,OH" into the Burial Place field and nothing else. I was immediately able to click thru a long list of people who are buried SOMEWHERE in that county. It helped that I usually enter the county between city and state for each person in my files. If there's no simple way to do something like what I just described in the Windows edition of PAF, then this is just another case of simple, handy features being lost in an upgrade of a DOS program. Does "Search" appear in the menu bar at the top of the PAF screen? What happens when you click on it? Have you tried clicking on "Help" and looking for information on the Search feature? Does anybody else on this list use any version of PAF? It's probably the original family history program. I bought my copy in 1987, right after I bought my first computer. One of my LDS cousins had let me try it on her computer and I thought it was so COOL!
