I use Ancestry, because I am in position to. I understand the frustration of those that find it costly. BUT...when we were living in Florida, I had no access to a research library. At least not one that held information I needed (there was a LDS library about 45 minutes away with limited hours and facilities) Ancestry filled the void. No travel expenses, no waiting for someone to finish using the microfilm reader or fiche. No copy cost. While Ancestry kept me researching....its is only as good as the person adding the entry, much like the IGI. What is most convenient is the availability of the census information and the ease of it's use. To sit in my home and be able to display the page of the census needed, without a line by line search is, in my opinion, a minor miracle. To think of the hours spent when that was the only way to find someone! Now, with more and more available: Newspapers, Pictures, books, I can't imagine what else will soon be found there. Yes, the charge. Yes, it is relatively expensive...yes, they use your research. The other point I would like to make is, that having information on Ancestry is that YOU WON'T LOSE IT, in a computer crash, a housefire, or any other calamity. I, as assistant archivist at the Local History Library in Troy, Miami County, Ohio, would like to offer our location at 100 W. Main St., as a site that would be interested in collections of family histories. People come from all over the US to visit with our library. I know it is because they have used our website ( www.tdn-net.com/genealogy ) to find information that brings them here. We have been contacted and visited by people around the world for help in searching their family tree. We are a branch location of the Troy-Miami County Public Library and work in cooperation with the Troy Historical Society to house a collection of family and county information. If you would like more details please contact me. Thanks Barbara Besecker Asst. If I want to acces the information I contributed to Ancestry.com....I have to pay them. I had bought it for a while, but then had my subscription cancelled, and even after i had cancelled it, got a confirmation code and everything.......for 8 months, they continued to with draw from my checking account. I called everymonth, kept getting the same confirmation code, and they still continued to make monthly withdraws. They promised to refund my money, but never did................. I had to close my bank account and open another,to put a stop to it. CRUSE <visionwarrior@verizon.net> wrote: Well, I have to agree with Tim on this. Sharon, I won't contribute to any site that requires a subscription. They are making money off of my or our research, and I just won't participate in it. Hello Tucker researchers: The Jonathan Tucker you are referring to was connected to My SWISHER family....he married Sarah Swisher in Montgomery Co. Ohio, but the marriage is mis-reported...giving his name as Jonathan LACKER in most of the records. Poor spelling or mis-reading likely. They had a good sized family and were later in White Co. IN, where they were buried. I have some info on most of their children and will gladly share. Sarah Swisher was the daughter of John Swisher and Mary (surname not given yet). They were originally from Bedford Co. PA, coming to Ohio agout 1815. They were in Montgomery Co. Randolph Twp. before 1820, and moved to Darke Co. OH. by 1828. John died in Greenville, Darke Co. in late summer 1849. Mary died after 1850. Anyone who would like a copy of the Jonathan Tucker info I have, should contact me personally at _...DGJR23@AOL.COM_ (mailto:...DGJR23@AOL.COM) ...... and send me a snail mailing address. Happy to hear from the List...don't we have a lot of fun and appreciation for each other. Cheers, Diane G. **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. How about a Public Family Tree on ancestry.com with the photos, etc. available online to anyone with a subscription? I am very fond of this site and how easy it is to find relevant information. Sharon Edythe98@aol.com wrote: If you are referring to data, you might consider donating your material to OGS in Mansfield. I have made notations on each of my family notebooks and file folders to donate my material and have made a notation with my Will. Also - all genealogy publications I have purchased for researching will be donated to my local library's genealogy dept. with the stipulation if they already have to try to find another nearby library - such as a more major city, to accept the duplicates. On my maternal side I have many photographs from the 1800s as well as family bibles from mid-1800s and was concerned about them. Fortunately, I have a cousin who has a son very interested in family history and have stipulated for those items to be given to them. In fact, due to my age, I have already begun giving them some of the original photographs and keeping the scanned copies. On my paternal side, there is no one to pass photographs on so they will be included with the family notebooks to be given to OGS. Personally, I prefer these options vs the LDS Church as more people will be able to access them at all times. I have had one problem with the LDS Church in Wyoming that has documents and photographs that I am unable to access. I also prefer to keep everything as local as possible. OHS [Ohio Historical Society] in Columbus has been cut back so drastically due to budgets, they do not seem to be able to maintain material well any more but that is also another option. At least you would know the information would be preserved. I hope this gives you some ideas. Shirley, The OHS (often know as the Ohio Hysterical Society in some circles) should NEVER be considered as an option, they are in history ONLY to make money! I have been an American Civil War reenactor and know many others. The OHS has HOSED many reenactors many times at Ohio Village in Columbus, Johnsons' Farm in Piqua and at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg as well as at other places they control or used to control. Time after time they have promised specific events and support to get reenactors, then changed the events and CHARGED for promised free support at the event (usually straw and firewood). They also destroyed several reenactments at the big Labor Day thing at Johnson's Farm in Piqua. THEY scheduled a Civil War Battle at a specific time on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and then POSTPONED, at short notice, the battle each day just to get one extra load of passengers each day on the canal boat! We tried to fill in for the 45 minute delay (that was actually one hour each time) but we could only do so much and we watched the crowd drop from over 100 to down around 30 each day. They just got tired of waiting and went on to other things or went home. The ONLY WAY they get reenactor support now is to promise the world to new units just forming, and that lasts till the first time they treat them like normal, ripping them off and raking them over. They have also abandoned major historical sites such Ft. Amanda south of Lima and, I have heard, Ft. St. Clair in Eaton, OH. Ft. Amanda was donated to the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park district as was the Deep Cut Park on the Miami and Erie Canal in Spencerville, OH when it got to be too expensive for the OHS to keep. If you look at what they are doing now, they are ONLY keeping venues that they can get ADMISSION for! They did not invest ANY money (or at least they have never proven they fought it with any money, though they have CLAIMED TO at times) in trying to prevent development around the Fallen Timbers Battlefield near Toledo, and now very close to that pivotal battlefield we have a MALL, "The Shops at Fallen Timbers. I would be VERY AFRAID that anything donated to OHS would either be sold for whatever kind of profit they could get out of it (your work on a commercial CD of a giant list of names) or thrown away for not wanting to spend any money preserving it properly.
