As I said she know how to use her cane if she walked down the aisle beside your desk and didn't like your writing or your work she came down across your desk with one of those canes and it did get your attention. 2. My main complaint with ancestry is that many of the obits I've tried to view come up as blank pages. I've repeatedly reported it and even said something to the person I spoke to when I renewed. The search engine for articles also leaves a lot to be desired. My downtown library has a wonderful genealogy department, however when I figure in the price of parking and the agravation of driving downtown, subscribing to ancestry and viewing things at my convenience is much better for me. 3. I look at Ancestry.Com two ways:1. Operational and 2.Data The operational side of Ancestry needs some work. Sometimes it is so difficult to review information. It is constantly being unavailable which is increasing in frequency. The organization of the data they have housed has become complex. I am not sure what is out there any more. The way updates are done for errors is old and antiquated. It does not work properly. When you change something it should update it to make the actual correction. Not just an informational marker. The functionality of it does not work properly. You would think they could hire programmers to make this work more efficiently. When you call to speak to a technician you never get a call back nor do I ever receive an answer from an email reporting an issue. Data on the other hand is another issue. When an existing tree is updated. It appears that the same information makes another tree based on update date. It should update the record you update. Not add another line. This takes up a lot of server space. Needless to say how many times have you had to look at the same persons information 3 or 4 times since it is a separate tree. There should be permanent standardized fields built in for data. For the most part I think it works great. It is time consuming as with any research. I use it a lot and I think it is very reasonably priced for the information on it. I can work from my home, print, copy and paste. I have a cost savings of not having to purchase materials from other resources. Most historical societies want you to pay to see their information online. So you pay either way you go. -----Original Message----- From: ohmiami-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohmiami-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ohmiami-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 11:48 AM To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com Subject: OHMIAMI Digest, Vol 3, Issue 39 Today's Topics: 1. I understand the frustration of those that find it costly. BUT...when we were living in Florida, I had no access to a research library. At least not one that held information I needed (there was a LDS library about 45 minutes away with limited hours and facilities) Ancestry filled the void. No travel expenses, no waiting for someone to finish using the microfilm reader or fiche. No copy cost. While Ancestry kept me researching....its is only as good as the person adding the entry, much like the IGI. What is most convenient is the availability of the census information and the ease of it's use. To sit in my home and be able to display the page of the census needed, without a line by line search is, in my opinion, a minor miracle. To think of the hours spent when that was the only way to find someone! Now, with more and more available: Newspapers, Pictures, books, I can't imagine what else will soon be found there. Yes, the charge. Yes, it is relatively expensive...yes, they use your research. The other point I would like to make is, that having information on Ancestry is that YOU WON'T LOSE IT, in a computer crash, a housefire, or any other calamity. 3. Maxine I had a Miss Rooks in the 8th grade at Kyle School in Troy Ohio. I don't know what her first name was because we used Miss Rooks. She used two canes to walk with and believe me she knew how to use them. I had her about 1948. We had to go into our rooms on the fire escapes. I remember on boy that got a Mohawk haircut one day when he came to school the next day she meant him at the top of the fire escape and sent him home. He showed up the next day with his head shaved. She was a good teacher. 3. How do they use your research? The only thing I know done with your own is that it is posted at your own request. They do not change it, added or subtract form it, or take anything from it. They just provide a service for you to be able to put yours online for others to find. If you don't want to share it, no one forces you to put it on there. 3. Have you tried the Troy Local History Library website? Go to www.tdn-net.com/genealogy and go to their Cemeteries listing. It's a wonderful site and maybe you'll get as lucky as I was just a while ago! Alan Knutson <boris@terracom.net> wrote: I have a question: I have a typescript (c1912) of family members, it lists Francis Caroline (Easty) Wilson, wife of Thomas Jackson Wilson (son of William and Jane (Enyeart) Wilson), b 2 Feb 1824, New Brunswick, CAN. d 17 Oct 1906. The typescript states that she is buried at Casstown, OH. I have checked the online transcriptions for the Casstown, Lewis and Sodom cemeteries in Lost Creek Township but have not found her burial, does anyone have any other suggestions as to where she might be buried?
