    3. This may be true. HOWEVER, if you contribute you will NOT be able to access your own information or any other information unless you also have a subscription. They do not give ANYTHING to people in exchange for putting your information on their site. So, it ends up with you putting your information on their services, and then they give you no price break, no nothing, and also charge others to look at YOUR information. Wouldnt put anything on ancestry for any reason myself.... > From: Gwamma38@aol.com> Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 18:58:02 -0500> To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [OHMIAMI] Ancestry charges for almost everything> > > In a message dated 12-Feb-08 3:47:35 P.M. 1. [OHMIAMI] Genealogy research sites.

    3. Hi, I use family search and ancestry.com. I have gotten alot of free information from these sites and others. I have never subscribed to one of these sites. If I want more information I use the library that I support in my community or I go to a local historical society library or museum. They are very gracious and open to sharing. If I want to register my ancestors as a first family in that county, I join that society; I at least try to leave a small donation to support their efforts. I use a PAF file to organize and manage my family information. I downloaded this PAF file for free from familysearch. I back up my file on a disc regularly to protect my work from any difficulties with my computer. Volunteers staff alot of these local institutions. Alot of the information on genealogy was done by these tireless people long before I became interested in genealogy and I am sincerely grateful to them for preserving my heritage. I agree that the LDS websites can seem like a juggernaut but I saw on a program on TV that they have information on millions of names. It must be very costly to gather and preserve all of that information. To manage it and make it available to everyone in so many ways seems like an impossible task. I have not put any information out there yet but I will when I am more confident in my own information. I know that I will be responsible for the content and I don't want to make any mistakes. I know that people will look at my file and possibly contact me with new information, possible corrections or questions. This can only make my information more accurate and complete. With such a wide audience who knows what connections I might make. Each of us is an individual. Its no big deal, do it however it suits you. Just have fun. 3. NOT true! See the Ancestry blog at http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2007/12/26/more-questions-and-answers-about-the-online-family-tree-transition/ And specifically: Will this continue to be a free feature? Or will everyone have to have a paid membership to use this? Your family tree in the Ancestry Member Tree system is FREE for you and all your invited guests. (Others who want to search your tree must have a paid subscription in order to do so.) Some related Ancestry.com features, such as viewing and attaching historical records to your tree, require a paid subscription. But you are free to ignore all paid features on the site. 3. I am surprised of your mention that you find the Ancestry.com website unavailable. It is extremely rare that I have had this happen and when it does I simply click on the back button and try again with no problem. I agree that errors could be handled better, but I suspect that rather than having someone physically check each submission it is easier to have it automated. At least the corrections are posted in due course and are searchable. As for their search engine, I find it EXTREMELY versatile. Please tell me how many other online genealogy services offer as many ways to search for information? I cannot tell you the number of times that I have searched by using a first name and other criteria to find someone who was either enumerated or indexed incorrectly or the surname was spelled in a variation I had not thought of or misspelled. You can search so many ways! Have you tried searching for all persons in a specific ward in any given census in your location of research? Or how about a listing of all passengers on a specific voyage to look for others who may be related to the person you found on a particular ship? The search engine is one of the BEST features of Ancestry. I have never found more than one of my family tree online when I have updated so I am not sure what you mean? It is very reasonably priced when you consider that the US subscription is less than 50 cents a day and the World subscription less than $1 per day. Of course, paying for it all at once is difficult for some people and I can understand that. But for those of us who can subscribe, it is a very cost effective way to conduct research that would take a lot more time and money to do the conventional way. Operational and 2.Data The operational side of Ancestry needs some work. Sometimes it is so difficult to review information. It is constantly being unavailable which is increasing in frequency. The organization of the data they have housed has become complex. I am not sure what is out there any more. The way updates are done for errors is old and antiquated. It does not work properly. When you change something it should update it to make the actual correction. Not just an informational marker. The functionality of it does not work properly. You would think they could hire programmers to make this work more efficiently. When you call to speak to a technician you never get a call back nor do I ever receive an answer from an email reporting an issue. Data on the other hand is another issue. When an existing tree is updated. It appears that the same information makes another tree based on update date. It should update the record you update. Not add another line. This takes up a lot of server space. Needless to say how many times have you had to look at the same persons information 3 or 4 times since it is a separate tree. There should be permanent standardized fields built in for data. For the most part I think it works great. It is time consuming as with any research. I use it a lot and I think it is very reasonably priced for the information on it. I can work from my home, print, copy and paste. I have a cost savings of not having to purchase materials from other resources. Most historical societies want you to pay to see their information online. So you pay either way you go.

    3. Hi Susan, Ancestry does not USE anyone's research. They offer server space for anyone who wants to put it there. They do nothing to it, the only changes made are those the contributor makes themselves. The only one to own the information is the contributor. Ancestry has no claim to it. The Ancestry World Trees are free to search as well as the 1880 US census, the SSDI and a few other databases. I hope this answers your question. 3. Yes , you bet Ancestry charges us for whatever you can get from them. They put their link out in many places and also send out days for free for certain items. Then when you find a name there and try to get it, they make you subscribe for them 2 free weeks free time. Then that isn't all with that, as they will if you don't unsubscribe by letting them know you don't want to stay after the 2 weeks free time BEFORE the 2 or 3 days that it is over, they will take your money for whatever you filled out for if they have a credit card number.. I have seen where some have had problems over this. Just don't give them a credit card number and they can't go ahead and get your money if you don't want them. Best thing to do is send them a American Express Money order for the time you want, then they can't continue you if you don'/t want to stay.. Many libraries are connoted to Ancestry and also there many people who don't have just SS to live on and can and do subscribe and are happy to look something up for you. Someone also told me they now have a program way , that you can go in with another r person and each pay half or go together on a subscription period and get to it that way. I have never checked on this but several have told me this. Would be nice if it is one way to get it. I would not give them or any place as such my only card number anyway but just send it by mail.
