    3. I have had that happen, too, but not just from people I have found through Ancestry.com. It has nothing to do with them - it is the people we have tried to contact that for whatever reason are not interested in replying. That is no reflection on Ancestry or any other Genealogy website. Of course it is frustrating, especially when it appears that you may have found the connection you are looking for, but in all ways, genealogy is a slow process and can only be put together piece by piece as you collect sources that help you put it together. That has got me angry too with them having wrong info, because you can network and connect the other's info, but may never hear from them.

    3. I don't see where they are charging us for putting our info on there or how they are making any money off of our trees. The cost to have employees to gather records and those with the computer knowledge to get those records online and organized online for us to search and all the other things they need to operate must be enormous. I, for one, do not have the time or money it would take to travel everywhere I need to research my ancestors. It would take me years to find everything I've been able to find in a few hours or days or weeks on there. Their every name indexes, which are not perfect but still the best available anywhere, alone are worth the price of the subscription. I do think we all need to put this topic to bed now and get back to Miami County research. My main Miami County surnames are Carter, Dobbins, Steen, and Beason. 3. Debbie, have you tried contacting the helpdesk at RootsWeb (by email)? They are very helpful there. If you can provide enough information to them to prove the tree(s) is/are yours, there should be some way they could help you. If I were you I would give it another try... what do you have to lose? 3. Ancestry uses a username and password, you do not need a specific email address to sign in. For LDS, go to their website and click on the link for the catalog. Once there, you have several options for searching. I find the best to be by place meaning the town where your ancestors were for the records you want. Add the country or state after the town name and enter and then you will find a listing of what is available for that area. Each one is clickable. When you find the one you are interested in - say Catholic Church records for the town of your choice, click on that listing. In the upper right hand corner on the information page for that roll of film there is a button to click which is called "film notes" or similar. Click on that and you will be given the pertinent film numbers. There could be more than one. Each has a description of what years and parishes the film covers. Hope this helps! I have went out to the LDS website. How are you supposed to know WHICH information to order in on an ancestor?

    3. The best way for ANY genealogist to safeguard their information in case of a computer crash or other tragedy IS TO BACK IT UP! 3. To all who are reading the ongoing blurb about genealogy services: I need to put in my 2cents worth. I have been involved with ancestry.com since it's inception. NO, I do not work for them! I have watched them grow to be what they are today. They are building databases to accommodate more and more researchers. Yes, the yearly fee seems overwhelming to one not having a library with the subscription, but it is SO worth it. The History center in Troy, Ohio, is a wonderful resource center for Miami County research, with the added bonus, as has been posted, of Ancestry.com. There is another new site available for free, to all researchers looking for Ohio deaths. The death certificates are online for FREE...not even Ohio State can match that. Here is the website. You must log in and get a password, and that takes about a day. It is well worth it: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/. Let's put the issue to rest and get on with positive, helpful research. De Hill -----Original Message----- From: ohmiami-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohmiami-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Debbie Carder Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 11:09 PM To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHMIAMI] Genealogy research sites. I don't put my info on ancestry or rootsweb anymore because if you change your e-mail address or password, you can't get into your pages to edit and correct them. I learned that long before ancestry owned rootsweb. But for research, especially the censuses and newspapers, ancestry is the best. When I was a "newbie", I posted my genealogy on rootsweb and hadn't documented all of it yet. Later, as I gained experience, I knew that I had a lot of errors in it and I had a new e-mail address and couldn't get in to correct my pages. I contacted rootsweb and told them the situation and their attitude was "tough luck" and nothing has ever been done. I can always tell when I look at others' pages who got their information out of my old tree and I cringe when I see the incorrect info. I don't want to mislead anyone but can't get it changed. When possible, I e-mail the person or put a post em with the correction. My suggestion, though, is this. If you want to put your info online, then put it on tribalpages. Their websites are beautiful and have great features and are free and very simple to do and if you don't want just anyone looking at them, you can set them so that others have to get a password from you, although, I prefer that anyone researching my families be able to assess my site. The wonderful thing is, though, in addition to having an extremely nice website is that you can go in and edit, correct, add, delete, or change your information anytime. You are in complete control. If you want to see a couple of tribalpages websites or get your own, look below my name for mine. 3. I don't know Sharon. It wasn't until I read the previous email that got me to thinking. I do know one thing for sure. About six months ago I made a slight change to the "title" of my family tree on ancestry. Well my thinking was that it would change the ALL old to the new listing. Well it didn't. I even called ancestry about it. I was told they have people that have changed their family tree name several times and its like a new one each time along with all the old ones. Ancestry does have some holes. On the listing there is no place for communion. Names changes are hard to list. I have a nephew born with one name, his father wouldn't pay child support so when his mother remarried and his new stepfather adopted him for another name change. Years later because his father/stepfather was very very mean and brutal, my nephew changed his name again when he joined the Navy to a variation of his grandfather. I know, I know its very screwed up. Also I am working on my husbands family tree. His grandfather didn't get along with his wife's parents. She died in 1915 and he left his two children with their grandparents/in laws. He went to Pennsylvania and started a new family. We know that he died sometime in the 1960's. And no he did not change his name. Any suggestions on how to find him? I have scoured Ancestry but come up empty handed. ----- Original Message ----- From: ohmiami-request@rootsweb.com<mailto:ohmiami-request@rootsweb.com> To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com<mailto:ohmiami@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 9:54 AM Subject: OHMIAMI Digest, Vol 3, Issue 48 Today's Topics: 1. They have to pay employees, pay for obtaining information, pay for internet space, and just like any other company, pay all taxes, etc., covering employees, buildings, etc. I, for one, have used Ancestry for almost ten years and have had no problems. I have a few family trees posted and have corrected with no problems. I have asked for assistance from their tech service and received help with no problems. I think it boils down to a person's choice - either join or not. No one is forced to pay a membership fee. BTW - my trees are still on Rootsweb as well as Ancestry. They have also had my credit card number for almost ten years and I always get an advanced notification that they will automatically renew my subscription unless I contact them. For every person that has had a problem, there are many more that have had none. Just like dealing with any other company. As far as finding information on the internet through societies, libraries, et al - it takes volunteers. So ask yourself when was the last time you walked a cemetery and transcribed it. Or gone to a court house and looked up birth, marriages, and deaths and transcribed them and offered to a library or genealogical society. Or even offered yourself as a volunteer look-up on any publications you have or looking up items at your local facilities for people who cannot get to your area. However, the problem that I DO have is that YOUR product (in this case compiled information, sometimes put together at great cost and time) is just that .... YOURS .. It is something YOU did, it is not THEIRS and in the case of your family history they did NOTHING to create that family tree. Yet, they talk people into putting it online on THEIR site, they pay you and give you NOTHING for that family tree (except ... big deal .. a place to put it online ... something you can do elsewhere without any hostage holding). Then, they turn around and charge YOU and anyone else who wants to see YOUR information money which they keep in THEIR pocket. Just like the person who wrote in relating how a computer crash wiped out their home database, which they had previously submitted to ancestry. The person asked for the simple help or courtesy of allowing them to retrieve a copy of their OWN information and was told "Sorry, not unless you pay for your own information by subscribing." Ancestry gives you NOTHING in return for anything you give them .... no free access to anything ... not even the Social Security Death Index is free at ancestry. That is why ancestry is the LAST place ... if even that ... that I would post my family tree on. With search engines, it is easy to find a family tree you create and put online and there are too many other places that dont engage in unfriendly customer relations. In my humble opinion, ancestry may, indeed, have a wealth of information, but they have some of the most arrogant and predatory practices and take advantage of others in an effort to line their own pockets. They use OUR information to make money for themselves when it comes to family trees. I will have no part in helping them make money for themselves with my and my cousin's efforts. If they want to sell and make money with their OWN efforts, that is just fine .... that's free market economy. Compile information, buy, catalog and put online documents, etc But taking and demanding YOUR money for YOUR efforts and giving you nothing in return, not even appreciation, is not free market economy ... it has another name. Please understand that I DO use ancestry. I use it for free in libraries that have chosen to pay for a subscription. I have found great information on it. My objections to ancestry come from practices occuring with information such as family trees or gedcoms submitted by other people for which ancestry pays nothing to acquire and then charging others for it.... including the people who submitted it. > From: Edythe98@aol.com<mailto:Edythe98@aol.com>> Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 08:43:27 -0500> To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com<mailto:ohmiami@rootsweb.com>> Subject: Re: [OHMIAMI] Ancestry charges for almost everything> > How may I ask would Ancestry be able to continue if they did not charge for > subscriptions? 3. Hi Debbie, You do not need an email address to sign in and edit your WorldConnect gedcom at RootsWeb. All you need is your user code or ID that you chose when you first uploaded your gedcom and your password which you also chose. The email address is changed in the edit process. Just choose advance options. If you lost or misplaced your user code and password, then I would expect that the people and RootsWeb would not be able to help you since they do not have that information, only the submitter does. Bottom line, when you first upload your gedcom to WorldConnect, write down your user code and password in a SAFE place. I keep mine in my agenda. I hope this is of some help and that you are able to update your incomplete information. Hi, I use family search and ancestry.com. I have gotten alot of free information from these sites and others. I have never subscribed to one of these sites. If I want more information I use the library that I support in my community or I go to a local historical society library or museum. They are very gracious and open to sharing. If I want to register my ancestors as a first family in that county, I join that society; I at least try to leave a small donation to support their efforts. I use a PAF file to organize and manage my family information. I downloaded this PAF file for free from familysearch. I back up my file on a disc regularly to protect my work from any difficulties with my computer. Volunteers staff alot of these local institutions. Alot of the information on genealogy was done by these tireless people long before I became interested in genealogy and I am sincerely grateful to them for preserving my heritage. I agree that the LDS websites can seem like a juggernaut but I saw on a program on TV that they have information on millions of names. It must be very costly to gather and preserve all of that information. To manage it and make it available to everyone in so many ways seems like an impossible task. 3. That is an excellent point, Debbie. We can all search at RootsWeb for free and it is a part of Ancestry.com. What's more, they host this and all other mailing lists and offer free websites - the GenWeb sites, FreePages. So even though they charge for their main website, they also give back a lot to the genealogical community. 1. Re: [OHMIAMI] Ancestry charges for almost everything
    2. How may I ask would Ancestry be able to continue if they did not charge for subscriptions? Now can we please get back to what this site is all about? Sharing information and helping each other. Shirley Shirley **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. 3. Dear Miami County, OH List Group: Tribalpages is a great place to post your genealogy to make it accessible to anyone wishing to see your family tree. I have used the paid version of it for about 3 years and I've been very happy with its service. Its free version is worth checking out also; however, it has banners on the pages which may or may not bother you. 3. If your tree was created on ancestry, you should be able to notify them that you're changing your e-mail address and find out how to change it on your account. The trees I had the problem with were created on rootsweb World Connect about 10 years ago so it may not be an issue on ancestry if you have a subscription with them . I would never give up the opportunity to have high speed internet over dial up just to be able to get into an online tree. A new tree can always be created. I would rather put mine on tribalpages.com (free) where I have full control over my website than on ancestry anyway plus you get so much more on your website than anywhere else. 3. Boy am I ever glad I read this latest email. I was/am in the process of changing my email address due to going high speed. Now I read that I won't be able to access my trees on ancestry. Now I don't know what to do. I have went out to the LDS website. How are you supposed to know WHICH information to order in on an ancestor? ----- Original Message ----- From: ohmiami-request@rootsweb.com<mailto:ohmiami-request@rootsweb.com> To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com<mailto:ohmiami@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 3:01 AM Subject: OHMIAMI Digest, Vol 3, Issue 46 Today's Topics: 1. 3. I'm glad I asked for opinions on ancestry.com. I have learned a lot. For one thing, I had never heard of Tribal Pages, but now will check it out. About changing your e-mail address - can't you continue to use your old one just as your site identity? What I mean is - when I go to my mother's house and log in to my ancestry or similar accounts, I just type in my information and it doesn't matter that it is on someone elses' computer...
