Sharon... What an interesting experience!!! I am at a loss as to what happened. Try again, because the site is so worth it. It is loaded with death certificates 1908-1953. See if this works: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html. You use your email to get into the program (once you have registered) and there are some great databases as well as the above Ohio stuff. Good luck, and keep me posted. Mary, When you want to enter a category that isn't included, you click on custom event. Then you can add whatever you want, like date of first communion, name change, whatever. I have the same question about what to do about different spellings of a surname. For example, a James Forsythe who had a son whos' name is usually spelled Forsyth isn't acceptable to the ancestry program. What I sometimes do is use the other spelling as one of the middle names... About six months ago I made a slight change to the "title" of my family tree on ancestry. Well my thinking was that it would change the ALL old to the new listing. Well it didn't. I even called ancestry about it. I was told they have people that have changed their family tree name several times and its like a new one each time along with all the old ones. Ancestry does have some holes. On the listing there is no place for communion. Names changes are hard to list. I have a nephew born with one name, his father wouldn't pay child support so when his mother remarried and his new stepfather adopted him for another name change. Years later because his father/stepfather was very very mean and brutal, my nephew changed his name again when he joined the Navy to a variation of his grandfather. I know, I know its very screwed up. Also I am working on my husbands family tree. His grandfather didn't get along with his wife's parents. She died in 1915 and he left his two children with their grandparents/in laws. He went to Pennsylvania and started a new family. We know that he died sometime in the 1960's. And no he did not change his name. Any suggestions on how to find him? I have scoured Ancestry but come up empty handed. --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Recently I had a discussion thread with Ancestry about uploading a revised gedcom file asking them if it would just replace what was there - this is in the Family Tree Section - NOT the Ancestry World Trees. They told me there was no provision to overwrite the online tree and the only thing you could do is to delete the tree and upload a new one. This in my view is rather archaic. Even WorldConnect allows for overwriting the gedcom and their system is far older. So, I am not surprised that the name change had no effect and resulted in two trees being online. One thing I would like to say is that it is true that the people at Ancestry do listen when enough people complain about a feature. So it is in our best interests to tell them what does not work well. Hello Darraugh I am Suz (Susan Cruse) in Tipp City, Ohio. I am so very sorry about your involvement with that tornado! What is needed there? How is the college managing? Your offer to ancestry is lovely. I was one of the $$challenged who dosen't join with it! But, about your needs down there. How is your home and family doing?? Prayers for Ya Girl. My best wishes to you. Suz Darraugh <darasue@charter.net> wrote: I am one of those who have had a subscription to Ancestry.com since 1998 and hope I can continue to maintain a subscription. I am also one of those who have had very little problems with Ancestry, particularly on the telephone. But as another list-subscriber previously mentioned, some have successful relationships and others don't. But this is not my main reason for my little blurb here. On occasion, an individual has emailed me about a surname that we may have in common and stated they have run into the infamous brick wall. Even though there is no match in the common surname, I will either go to Ancestry.com and look up the individual's name they are inquiring about, or will email the individual asking if they have a subscription to Ancestry and if not, I would be more than willing to see what I could find on the name of inquiry. Of course, I get back to the person to let them know whether I found information or not. Having said this and keeping in mind what another list subscriber mentioned of limited income resources, I am willing to do a search on Ancestry's website for the individual of whom the list subscriber is seeking. However, I do have limited time during certain months of the year. I happen to be a 40-something mother of three kids and a full-time college student at Union University in Jackson, TN. As many of you may have heard over the past two weeks, this is the same university that was hit by the F-4 tornado. We are suppose to be resuming on February 20th - hence, the little bit of free time I now have. Otherwise, during the college semesters (Sept thru Dec and Feb thru May) are off limits for feeding my genealogy addiction. If a list subscriber would like me to do a search on Ancestry.com for a particular individual, please be sure to email me directly, so as to free up this list of unrelated Miami County inquiries. Please put "Ancestry.com Search" in the subject line; include specifics you have about the individual and what specifically you are looking for; and provide me with plenty of patience. Hey, Guys. Could I make a request? When you hit the reply button- please edit out what is not important from the original message and leave what you are referring to in the post as a quote or some other kind of highlight. Repeating all the emails over and over again makes it hard to find the new postings and uses lots more space on the server. For those of us who get these lists in Digest Mode, it is particularly difficult. This is a reply to ONE digest that contained only TWO new messages. See the <<----- below. But just follow on down the page and look at what was in that total digest message. These things get reprinted over and over not only in our email but in the archives. I am one of those who have had a subscription to Ancestry.com since 1998 and hope I can continue to maintain a subscription. Again, email me directly and NOT to the OHMIAMI email list. Darraugh Nolan Tennessee
I clicked on your link to the family search site, and tried to register, but all i got was a big klonk out of the computer. What am I doing wrong? --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
I have no problem with ancestry or any other business charging for THEIR product or information. However, the problem that I DO have is that YOUR product (in this case compiled information, sometimes put together at great cost and time) is just that .... YOURS .. It is something YOU did, it is not THEIRS and in the case of your family history they did NOTHING to create that family tree. Yet, they talk people into putting it online on THEIR site, they pay you and give you NOTHING for that family tree (except ... big deal .. a place to put it online ... something you can do elsewhere without any hostage holding). Then, they turn around and charge YOU and anyone else who wants to see YOUR information money which they keep in THEIR pocket. Just like the person who wrote in relating how a computer crash wiped out their home database, which they had previously submitted to ancestry. The person asked for the simple help or courtesy of allowing them to retrieve a copy of their OWN information and was told "Sorry, not unless you pay for your own information by subscribing." Ancestry gives you NOTHING in return for anything you give them .... no free access to anything ... not even the Social Security Death Index is free at ancestry. That is why ancestry is the LAST place ... if even that ... that I would post my family tree on. With search engines, it is easy to find a family tree you create and put online and there are too many other places that dont engage in unfriendly customer relations. In my humble opinion, ancestry may, indeed, have a wealth of information, but they have some of the most arrogant and predatory practices and take advantage of others in an effort to line their own pockets. They use OUR information to make money for themselves when it comes to family trees. I will have no part in helping them make money for themselves with my and my cousin's efforts. If they want to sell and make money with their OWN efforts, that is just fine .... that's free market economy. Compile information, buy, catalog and put online documents, etc But taking and demanding YOUR money for YOUR efforts and giving you nothing in return, not even appreciation, is not free market economy ... it has another name. Please understand that I DO use ancestry. I use it for free in libraries that have chosen to pay for a subscription. I have found great information on it. My objections to ancestry come from practices occuring with information such as family trees or gedcoms submitted by other people for which ancestry pays nothing to acquire and then charging others for it.... including the people who submitted it. > From: Edythe98@aol.com> Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 08:43:27 -0500> To: ohmiami@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [OHMIAMI] Ancestry charges for almost everything> > How may I ask would Ancestry be able to continue if they did not charge for > subscriptions? Hi Debbie, That's really too bad. Obviously they didn't foresee that people often change their email addresses. :-) For the benefit of all of you who may be worried, I just signed into my gedcom at RootsWeb WorldConnect with my user code and password without any problems. I did not need to use my email address. I signed in two ways, both with the older upload specifications and the newer version and was able to access everything including downloading a copy of my gedcom to my hard drive (I need to do some updating!), without any problems. Also, I found that in the registration area of RootsWeb, you can add other email addresses that you have used with them and have everything linked - if you want to. It is unfortunate what happened to Debbie but I still urge all of you to upload at WorldConnect - I cannot tell you the number of people who have found me there. Between having your gedcom at RootsWeb and also that they include it at Ancestry, the exposure you get is VAST. This OF COURSE does not mean that you can't submit your gedcom somewhere else or make use of the Tribal pages that Debbie was telling us about. You can do that in addition to uploading your gedcom to WorldConnect and INCREASE your chances of having someone find you. Just ALWAYS remember to keep your email addresses current anywhere you submit your information and keep your usernames and passwords in a safe place! They don't deny that it's my tree, only not that there's no way to get into it. I'm not that concerned. As I said, I contact anyone I find who is using my incorrect info and they are usually grateful and I have found a new cousin in the process. I also have post 'ems on my pages stating what is incorrect and if I find that info in anyone else's tree, I contact them and put a post 'em on their pages for anyone else who goes there and include my e-mail address if anyone wants to contact me about it. I've been with ancestry since the beginning and agree with you. There wasn't near as much on it then and some of it was hard to use, just indexes, not records and there was only one basic search, not all the search options you have now. There was nothing compared to what they offer today and they have barely raised their prices since then so you are getting way more than you did in the beginning and more than you are going to get on any other website. Janet, The collection that was at the Hayner Cultural Center for many years is now located at 100 W. Main St. in Troy. We have been there about 4 years and we have so much more room. We are very proud of our facility which has been provided to us by the Troy-Miami County Public Library. It is actually across the street from the Miami County Courthouse. The Troy Historical Society continues to volunteer their services as they have since inception of the history and genealogy library. We grew out of the space at the Hayner. The Hayner continues to provide culture for the area. Our hours are: Monday & Wednesday 10-8 Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 10-4 Saturday 9 - 1 By going to the website you can see a lot of what we have available http://tdn-net.com/genealogy/troy/troy-lib.htm We have 2 microfilm readers that print. We have 2 computers that the patrons can use. Ancestry is available for patrons. We have a room especially for the family histories that have been donated over the years. We now have the layouts of the cemeteries in Miami County. So if you know the section and lot # you can see it on the maps. I encourage all to come visit us. Thanks Barbara Besecker Asst. I do agree that they should always let you have access to your information and that you should have complete control over the ability to edit it. That's why I do not put mine on there anymore but use tribalpages, which offers you a great website of your own free. They also have paid ones without advertising but there's really not much advertising on the free ones. I have never been asked or had them try to talk me into putting it on there, though. All I have seen is that they promote it so that you know the service is available if you want to put it on there. I understand not everyone wants to or is able to have a subscription but I do know that the library addition doesn't have as many resources and records accessible.
