    3. The Palatines to America Society, a German genealogy group, has its national headquarters in Columbus. It has a good German genealogy library. The library is open on Wed, Thur and Friday from 10:00 to 3:00. It is open the same hours on the first and third Saturdays. There is a small fee for visitors who are non- members. Also for a small fee, the library will do research from the internet. The web site is http://www.palam.org. There is also a small bookstore. The group will hold its national conference in June. The address is: 611 E. Weber Rd. Columbus, OH 43211 614.267.4700 It is near the intersection of I-71 and Weber Rd. It is in a small office building by the railroad track. 3. Hi Joanne, The travel route from New York City to Piqua depends on several factors. Here I am including some general information along with an attempt to answer your question! *What time period did your ancestors immigrate to the US? The earlier they came, the possibilities are fewer. They could have traveled over land on the various "roads" of the time, but this was a very difficult and long journey. They would have had to purchase a wagon and mules in order to make this journey, so unless they had some money they could spare, this would not be the first choice. Many, many immigrants moved west by the waterways. If it was after 1825, they went up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal and traveled across New York State to Lake Erie. Here is a description that was posted on another mailing list of how one family traveled to St. Paul. It will give you some idea: The following account given by a man who traveled in 1849 from Augusta, Maine to St. Paul. It's not clear how far he took the 'steam car.': "...I started from Maine by the steam cars, taking them at Augusta....We went by boat to Boston, then by rail to the Erie Canal. We were ten days on a good clean canal boat and paid five dollars for board and our ticket. I don't remember how long we were on the lakes or what we paid, I should say two weeks. We landed at Chicago. It was an awful mud hole....A man was sending two wagons and teams to Galena, so I hired them...We bought tickets to St. Paul. Three of us took passage on the Yankee. She was really more of a freight than a passenger boat. She only made three trips to St. Paul that year...It was so cold the fifteenth day of October that the Captain was afraid that his boat would freeze in, so would go no further and dumped us in Stillwater... Travel to Piqua could also have been on the canals that, as I understand it, no longer exist today. If they had sufficient funds and it was 1860 or after, they could have used the railroads or partly by rail and partly by water. *Did they have a large or small amount of money? As I have already mentioned, money was a huge factor in how they traveled. The more limited their funds, the more limited the possibilities and the longer the journey. By far the cheapest way to cross New York State was by water. *How many were in the traveling party? While we all know that many families moved to all parts of the US in various fashions during the 18th century, families with small children most likely chose methods of travel that would be the most congenial for their little ones - certainly a canal boat would have been easier than going overland and cheaper, too. If it was a small group of men - brothers, cousins, etc., it is possible they would have looked for a faster way to travel, but again, it would depend on the funds at their disposal. Of course they could have stopped along their way and worked at various jobs to earn more money and some of them did, but to know absolutely how YOUR ancestors arrived in Piqua would be impossible unless you found their diary or some other of their personal papers that told of this account. Despite the fact that many traveled the waterways, others the railways and still others by wagon, I think you will discover that there was still some uniqueness in how each immigrant or immigrant family arrived at their destination. As for a book on this subject, I really do not know of any one book that addresses this subject. You might try looking into what the Ohio libraries might have on this subject. I doubt you will find it in any one book. For example I am currently reading a book on the Erie Canal (in New York State) and it discusses how the immigrants traveled along the canal to their destinations and some about what their experiences might have been. Maps of the period in question will undoubtedly allow you to see the possibilities for travel. Probably the best source for this subject would be any personal accounts you might be able to find, most probably in the libraries or perhaps the Historical Societies. I would recommend asking the Flesh Public Library. The people there are very helpful and if they do not have anything that might provide the information, they probably would know if there is anywhere you could contact that might be able to help you. The e-book I referenced earlier in this post has some very interesting personal accounts that may give you some insight. I hope that this helps in some way. 2. Re. German immigrants An excellent book is "They came in Ships"(Revised Edition) by John Philip Colletta.  It's a small book but loaded with information and reference/ research tools.  Colletta lectures at the National Archives and Smithsonian and on the Genealogy lecture circuit around the country and really knows his subject.  There were many ports of embarcation and debarcation.  Also, if you search for this book on Amazon, you will get a list of other references. This will help you with how your ancestor may have gotten to the "New World" (One of the ports of entry). After that, the path to Piqua may not been direct, as people moved West as means/opportunity permitted and where word of mouth gave them hope of getting land or plying their trade.  A primary means of travel West into Ohio, at that time, would have been on the “National Highway” (the first paved [“Macadamized”] highway in the US) which went from Cumberland, MD to Springfield, IL.  It was finished as far as Western Ohio in the early 1830’s. 1. Re: [OHMIAMI] Pension Files
    2. Again from all the time I spent hunting files at the Archives. Sometimes I would pull a file and copy a lot of pages only to find when I got home that I had cut off a word I needed - you have a time limit and always trying to get as much done as possible during my turn. Anyway when I went back in 3 months to pull the file again I was told it wasn't where it belonged. This went on for some time and finally a year later it was back there. Now for the reasons: 1. It seems to take them a long time to get them filed back after being pulled. The ones I needed a second time always showed up but it took almost a year. 2. Sometimes they are out with students in the room doing projects. That happened to me one day and I was not real happy. The teacher brought in a dozen either high school or college students and they were given a list of names to pull and copy. They monopolized the machines and they weren't even looking for anyone special. 3. Sometimes a researcher has a lot out as for a project. When you visit the room, you are only allowed one file at a time - yet I think these kids had more. 5. They now only let you have 20 files a day, it might be less. It was 24 and I ordered them and then had 2 days of work so perhaps someone else is working with them that day. I don't think they have the time nor the staff to keep track of files that people are waiting on. You just have to keep submitting your request. Some are truly lost - stolen I think. Others are mixed with someone else's file either from the past or a researcher project. I have found lots of papers in the wrong person's file and I don't know how long it takes them to find the right file and straighten out the error. Then there are the files with letters such as C, etc and not just numbers. Those files are not at the National Archives but at local veteran administrations and I am not sure exactly how to get them, but have to learn as have a growing list I need. The Archives are a very busy place with so many different types of research going on. I love being there and the research room was put on the National Historical Building or something like that and they couldn't turn this gorgeous research room into offices like they intended. Yeah. Paneled walls and carved molding. The did upgrade it with new research desk, lamps and an electric outlet at each desk. Enough rambling. Just remember they have so many files and it does disappear at times. Think of Sandy Berger who walked out with all those papers from the Clinton administration stuffed in his pants and socks. He got off with a fine and a 3 year exile from the Archives. I would be in jail if I tried that. Jerilyn **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. 3. This may not happen often. I ordered pension papers for one relative and a distant cousin ordered the same relative's poapers just a few days after me. We did not know that we had ordered the same pension papers a few days apart. So, the government told my cousin that they could not find the papers he wanted. But they never contacted him again, to say if the papers were found.
