    3. Wayne - a question... Is your site indicating that the work produced in 1912 by Miller and Royer is copyrighted by you? Since that work was published prior to 1923, it would be in the public domain. Even if you provided new **formatting** that might be copyrightable, the info in the book itself is not copyrightable. dee

If so, you don't need to do anything but sign up and install. I use the free Pico Search on my site www.genealogyfinder.com Try a search on if for the word Peacock - you'll get page matches for that family name in Erath County, Texas. 1. [OHMIAMI] Some Who Led by D. L. Miller & Galen B. Royer #2 (Volunteers)
    2. Wayne Webb
    3. Evening Lists, Since several people seemed intrigued by the idea of volunteering to aid in the creation of keywords for the Some Who Led web site I thought a word to the wise in how it should work. Those interested in participating would send an email to me denoting their willingness to participate. After I have some five or six willing I will assign them a range of pages to work on. Each person would enter the proper information into the box to the bottom right corner. They can do four ro five pages, or whatever feels comfortable to them per session, and send the email. I will then on a periodical basis update the web site to reflect those changes. The follow lines is an example of how the email is when I receive it; minus the opening and closing quotes. "001.jpg ~~ ____________________________________________ 008.jpg ~~ ____________________________________________ 073.jpg ~~ Comments: Jacob Wine, George Wine, George Wein, Philadelphia, Pa., York County, Pa. Little Canowago congregation, Michael Wine, Susanna Miller, Frederick, Md., Shenandoah County, Va., Forestville, Va., John Wine, Elizabeth Garber, Elder Martin Garber, Flat Rock, Va., Jacob Wine, John Garber, Catherine Neff, John Neff, Daniel P. Wine, Page County, Va., ~~ ____________________________________________ 074.jpg ~~ Comments: Jacob Price, New Market, Va., West Virginia, Ohio, Prince of Peace, Civil War, Brother John Kline, Hardy Co.,W.Va., Pendleton Co., W.Va, Flat Rock church, ~~ ____________________________________________ 075.jpg ~~ " What information do we need to enter keyword about? Since Robin was kind enough to show what it would look like a few rules on what is needed. Obviously we want every person mentioned with the women denoted by both their maiden and married names. Robin correctly entered Susanna Miller. Susanna Miller would also entered as Susanna Wine. Yes, it may seem odd but in the long run it works because someone may only known of "Mrs. Susanna Wine" and not know her maiden name or the name of her husband. Galen B. Royer aand Daniel Long Miller, more commonly known as D. L. Miller, would be entered two or three different ways. As you can see on the metadata I already have entered they each appear several different times under variants. Again this is trying to be as helpful as possible. Now as to places. This presents a small problem. Yes, we would like to know all the instances of a county or city. I believe that in the entirety of the project this would be cumbersome. What I have done in the material I have completed is to create keywords for the churches and congregations and any other church body. Even if the church mentioned was not a German Baptist church I recorded it. I also created index entries for institutions (Virginia Normal College, Huntingdon Normal School, etc. etc.) and any companies mentioned. I have also entered any references to periodicals Brethren related such as the Primitive Christian, Brethren Family Almanac, etc., etc. I am not saying that the way I view this is either right or wrong. Once I get the five or six volunteers I would like we will mutually settle on a schema to follow. Perhaps it may include counties and cities. Thank you to the two people who did seem to be interested in participating. Wayne Webb

    3. Afternoon List, As part of my ongoing archival project of German Baptist church related material I have posted online a sample of one of the books in my collection. I offer it for your reading pleasure. There are no strings attached but I do offer these words of advice. You may have trouble printing it depending on your computer. I can not control this and offer no solutions to this problem. You will not be able to "right-click" the image and save it to your computer. There may be some other problems that I am not aware of - no warranty comes with the material. For those of you with dial-up modems you will likely have problems with the images in the film strip at the bottom of the page. I know I did when the site was created. Your web browser will likely time out and not paint all the images. In their stead will be just a place-holder. Clicking on the image still serves the same function - it takes you to that page. Those with a faster connection to the Internet should have no problems. How it would appear on a Web TV I do not know. Web site creation for that crowd offers difficulties. The book contains the biographies of a sampling of prominent, and some not so well-known, ministers and elders of the German Baptist church of the 19th and early 20th Century. The graphics were scanned individually and then the book in its entirety was typeset. It represents a lot ofd work on the part of myself so I do hope that you enjoy it. I am looking for a select few individuals willing to help me create keywords, such as shown on the pages. What is needed is the keywords from the individual pages to be typed into the block to the bottom right and then emailed to me. Let us see how many are willing to aid in this and how many just want the book with no effort on their part. Takers and no givers! This web site is a test bed to see how the technology works and how to set up an aesthetically appealing site. It, with several other works, will hopefully be the start of something that will attract attention so that others of it's kind can be worked on. I am looking for critiques on the page. Please do not send an email asking for a serarch engine. Yes, there is no search engine as you may have noticed. You need keywords to create a search engine plus the program that can eventually be obtained to create the search engine. As stated, a few readers can facilitate this by taking the time to email them. One person to take a range of pages and one or several others to take another range of pages and soon it would be done. Then a search engine program can be purchased to create one. The one thing needed is a Javascript routine to include a "next" & "previous" page button on each page. I do not know how to create such a script as I am not a programmer. To create each page and then include on it these buttons is very time consuming thus requiring a script to accomplish it. You try coding this many pages, and more, and soon you will see what I mean. If you go to the "Contents" page (pages 7 and 8) you will see an alphabetical listing of the biographies. They are all capable of being clicked with your mouse which will take you to that page. Furthermore, if you scroll using the film strip at the bottom to page 225 there is an index. You can clck on the number and it will take you to that page. My thanks to Mr. Dennis Roth for hosting this site for me. His willingness to step up to the plate is most welcome and admired. Please, no emails asking something that was already covered in this email. Read the email if you have any questions. And lastly. You may pass this email along to any mailing lists you would like to. However, please include the entirety of the email and not just the web site link. http://www.brethrennetwork.com/orwahist/books/001_some_who_led/ Wayne Webb Editor: Brethren Roots P.S. I sure do write a disjointed email huh! Sure wish I had finished school. <grin>
