For more information contact [email protected] The Pennsylania Humanities Council presentation “Slovak Settlers in Pennsylvania”, by Commonwealth Speaker Dr. Michael Kopanic. In this illustrated presentation, Michael Kopanic examines where Slovak immigrants settled and describes some of their early experiences in the state. Some of Dr. Kopanic’s most interesting information is drawn from the unpublished archives of Rev. Baska, one of the first to research the settlements of early Slovaks. This presentation is supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylania Historical Commission. ----------------------------- The Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet on Monday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the 4 mile Run Christian Church in Austintown, Ohio. This lecture will explain the reasons why you might or might not be able to find the passenger list for your ancestor, and tips on where else to look. The newly opened Ellis Island Records website will also be discussed. Elissa has been doing genealogical research since 1985, and became certified as a Certified Genealogical Record Specialist (CGRS) by the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) in 1995, and is one of only eight certified associates residing in the state of Pennsylvania. Elissa is a past president of both the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and the North Hills Genealogists as well as past newsletter editor for both. She is a Trustee for the Association of Professional Genealogists. Elissa also appears in Episode 207 "Cemetery Records" of the PBS TV station KBYU's "Ancestors 2" series. -------------- -------------- Old St. Luke's Church Heritage Lecture Series, located in Scott Township, Allegheny County, PA. At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 7: "The Role of Newspapers in Pittsburgh's History" will be presented by Clarke Thomas, senior editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Post-Gazette traces its roots back to 1768 and was the first newspaper west of the Allegheny mountains.
