There is a wonderful resource at the LDS Family History Centers - Women in the Western Reserve OHIO before 1840 . Litchfield was in Medina CO. My Fenn ancestors - I believe - were from Medina Co..The woman responsible for this county must have had some misfortune, as her efforts were aborted and the county is scantily covered, if at all. It seems that in 1896 a large group of women protested among themselves that the men got all the credit for whatever good was accomplished in the early days - books were largely written about men - and they decided to interview women and learn how they lived, etc..in the various counties - the criteria of selection was pioneer women in Ohio between 1796 and 1840 (1850). They then wrote up the results. It was a fabulous success for researchers. Later came an index. It's on fiche -2 or 3 fiche-, arranged alphabetically by surname. Then it is broken down by women's first names. The number given for each woman corresponds to a page on the film of the same title. Fiche #6087501 Film 1009031 misc. counties and 1009032 Trumbell Co. Enter the film number in http:www.familysearch.com (library holdings) and you can see which counties were covered. There you find when your ancestor came to that part of OHIO and her last dwelling place if dead. The husband's name is also given and for the most part children are right under - not boys however - the focus is on women. Lastly, but of great importance, there are the accounts. Now should anyone be fortunate to find the right woman and family in the fiche and film, they must take a trip to Cleveland where there are large volumes in the Western Reserve Historical Society corresponding to the numbers designated on the fiche and in the film- I think I remember reading that there were 15 vols.. The details are as individual and interesting as the ladies themselves. There are also a number of memorabilia kept there from that time. I hope this is helpful to many of you. Joan
I'm not sure if this is the reference you mentioned, but there is a 3 volume set, that I looked through at the OGS in Mansfield, named Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve. It, too, was written in 1896. The index there is in book form. There is a reference in it to my 4gr grandmother, Sarah Gilchrist (Mrs. Eugene). It tells of her trip to the US from Ireland, a widow with 7 children. It mentions that her two daughters were Betsey and Jane. I often wondered why it didn't mention the male offspring--thanks for giving us the info on why it was written. It is a very interesting book and gives a lot of insight into those times. Unfortunately, from a genealogical standpoint, most of it was written from the pioneer woman's relatives a generation or two later and that has led to inconsistencies. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan T.
