I'm trying to find his ancestors in hopes of finding a connection to my ancestor, Ogden Alger (1810-1876), born in NY, married Harriet Luddington in Ashtabula, and moved to MI. It's a long shot, but I'm at a dead end here with Ogden's ancestry. Of course with Russell Alger or his parents coming from CT or Mass., it's an even longer shot than I thought!

I included the Sarah A. Grim marker, as it is the only one listed as being between those of Ellen Agler and Mary P. Agler, and I thought perhaps she could be related to the family. Ellen Agler (above) may be the Ellen, age 57 b. in PA, may be the Ellen listed in the 1870 Census of Lafayette Twp with John Agler, age 66 b. in CT, both of whom appear to have been old enough to be the parents of your Russell. And the Urial S., mentioned above as being the husband of Mary E., might be a brother of your Russell. Good Luck!!! Jean Best

We know that his parents were from New York. His father was James Cannon VanLiew and his mother was Sarah Babcock. What we can't seem to discover is when they left Ohio and went to Michigan and if they knew the Feltenberger family in Ohio as that was where Alphas Feltenberger was also born in 1865. Alphas or Alphus married the daughter of William and Josephine "Brooks" VanLiew - Estella Meb VanLiew. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

About 1840 came, from Connecticut and Massachusetts, settlers with names still connected with farms of that well cultivated township: (lists about fifteen names) and Russell Alger. Down two paragraphs it says: Perhaps the most known native resident of Lafayette is Russell Alger: General Alger was conspicious in the War of the Rebellion; afterward he made a fortune in lumber in the state of Michigan, became U. S. Senator from that state, was Secrectary of War under McKinley and Thedodore Roosevelt; later served as the head of the Grand Army of the Republics. Hope this helps. Norm Wehner

    3. Posted on: Medina Co. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Medina/333 Surname: SMITH, LEVITT, LEVET, LEAVITT ------------------------- SMITHHi, Mary Kay I checked my History of Medina Co., Baskin & Battey, and found a Soloman Smith mentioned on page 657. His name is included in a group of men and their families who were among the early settlers of Homer Twp, this having been in the very early 1830's, locating in the southeastern part of the township. I found the name mentioned again on page 347 where it lists participants from the county who enlisted for service during the Civil War. Included with those from Medina Twp is: SOLOMON SMITH, Co. H, 8th O.V.I., enlisted June 1861; killed in service. I also checked my Medina Co. tombstone book, and found this group buried together: Pg 185 N.W. 3. Posted on: Medina Co. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Medina/331 Surname: Hastings, Carr, Warner, Deming ------------------------- Permelia Carr was my grgrgrandmother in my Hastings line. Permelia is buried in Delta Center Cemetery, Eaton Co., MI. I was aware that she had married George Moore after Waitstill's death in 1842. I don't have much on George Moore but have much on the Hastings line and a bit on the Carr line. Robert Carr was b. in Weare Twp., NH, came with his wife Alice and daughters Permelia and Sallie in 1816 to Liverpool Twp., Medina Co., OH. Robert had a son Robert who was a treasurer of Medina Co. If you are a desc. in the Hastings line, there are Mayflower connections.

Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Medina/330 Surname: Babyak, Gilchrist, Horwedel, Traxler, Zawerac ------------------------- I don't know if this fits, but here goes. Just recently I came upon a connection I seem to have to a Robert Carr in Medina Co. My gggg grandmother, Sarah Gilchrist, purchased 72 acres in Brunswick Twp. in September 1823. The deed states in part "by Sarah Gilchrist and Robert Corr [or Carr,I think it should be] late of Ireland in the county of Down and now residing in the township of Brunswick...in equal quantity..." The reason I think it should be Carr with an "a" is there is no mention of any other Corr in any census or records of Medina Co that I have seen. There is, however, a Robert Carr mentioned in a few places. Sarah was a widow from Co. Down with 6 children. Her husband,Eugene/Eoghain/Owen),was dead before she immigrated here. An old history said that she had been told by her brother that this was a great place to live. I have info that her maiden name was Clark, but it's undocumented. In the Pioneer History of Medina County 1881, there is a list of Treasurers of Medina Co. A Robert Carr is listed as : Robert Carr, Liverpool, 1852, 4 years. According to the other dates in the list, he served 1852-1856. Liverpool Twp is right next to Brunswick Twp. Sarah and a couple of her children owned land there also around the 1840-50's. I did see in the 1850's (I think it was about then) that the "Heirs of Robert Carr" owned some land in either Brunswick or Liverpool Twp. Think it could be the same man?
