It was not an easy path and, at at several points, including Stone's River and the Chickamauga, more agressive action from the Southern Army under General Bragg might have resulted in the destruction of Rosecran's Army. Stones River was fought just west and north of Murfreesboro, Tennessee begining on Dec 30 1862 and ending in Bragg's pull-out to the south Jan 3 1863. This battle along with the earlier battle at Shiloh proved men of valor on both sides would march and fight without disasterous retreating. Battle losses at Stones River were a staggering 24,000 men out of 12,900 of 41,000 for the Union and 11,730 of 34,739 for the Confederates. The battle began with both Armies trying to roll up their opponents left wing which resulted in a Clockwise rotation wherein Union General Hazen's stand became the center of rotation. Basically the Confederates were stopped from destroying the Union Army by Hazen's stand and the adroit placement of Artillery along the railroad leading back to Nashville. I will leave it to wiser men to describe the battle fully and explain why the South lost the battle. The best account, in my opinion, is "No Better Place to Die" by Peter Cozzens. I believe that was a line spoken in true poetic style by Irish-born Patrick Cleburne, a Conferderate General, to one of his peers upon viewing the beautiful landscape around Murfreesboro before the battle began, of which freeways and construction have erased much. It still is a beautiful town and maybe Cleburne would repeat himself although, to the west of Murfreesboro lies Franklin, Tennessee where a couple of years later Cleburne actually did die, is perhaps "a better place to die" nowadays. Oh Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Medina/10505 Surname: DODGE, STOAKS, PERKINS ------------------------- Need help with the following family line. Luther Palmer Dodge was born in New York on 23 Jan 1826. I don't know how long his family lived in NY but do know that he moved to Medina County Ohio, sometime in the 1830s to 1840s. Luther married Mary Jane Stoaks in Medina, Medina Co, Ohio on 29 Mar 1849. The Stoaks were originally from Steuben Co, and Orange Co, New York. Luther and Mary were living in Delaware Co, Ohio in 1850 and their next door neighbor was a George W. Dodge whom I'm sure was related somehow. Maybe an older brother?? Samantha Dodge may have been a younger sister?? Delaware Town, County of Delaware, enumerated by Henry Wodjdon 31 July 1850 Page 170 B Line25 House #1041 George W. Dodge age 32 Manufacturer b. Ohio Samantha Dodge age 19 b. NY I believe that Samantha Dodge married Noah Shaw and lived in Columbus Ohio. Sometime after 1850, Luther moved his family to Detroit Michigan where his son was born: Joseph L. Dodge b-13 April 1861. I'm sure there were more children, but Christina and Joseph are the only two that I know about at this point in my research. At this time, I believe that Luther may have been a Photographer in Detroit. Luther Palmer Dodge died on 20 Oct 1869 in Wayne Michigan which is right next to Detriot Michigan. Age 43. After his death, I believe that his family moved back to Ohio. His son Joseph L. Dodge married Elizabeth S. Sauer in Cleveland Ohio on 20 Aug 1885.The Dodge family was a prominent family in Cleveland at the turn of the century. They had the following children: 1.Benton Dodge was born on 25 Aug 1886 in Cleveland, Ohio. He died on 27 May 1957 in Cleveland, Ohio. 2.Clayton Dodge was born on 8 Aug 1890 in Cleveland, Ohio.
