Greetings! I am planning to make my first visit to Medina County next week, to do some research on my wife's family. Can anyone advise me as to: * the address & days/hours of the County Court House (and their procedures/rules that apply to genealogists); * the address & days/hours of one of the better genealogy libraries in the county. Most of my own research (so far) has been in Michigan, so I am not familiar with what records are maintained at the county level vs at the state level (for Ohio). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated - thank you! Steve [email protected]
See the Medina County Genweb link to the Medina District Library. They have a Genealogy Research room, and many county recods and the Gazette on film [with index]. Below are nine meeting opportunities that provide genealogical information, and for the most part, are free... one could be in your area, or worth driving to! On Tuesday, August 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Northland Public Library, 300 Cumberland Rd., McCandless Twp., Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Free and open to the public. the North Hills Genealogists (for more info: [email protected]) will feature "THE ETHNIC EXPERIENCE IN LAWRENCEVILLE", by James Wudarczyk, noted local historian and author. Mr. Wudarczyk will illustrate how the various ethnic groups were instrumental in shaping the Lawrenceville community. Injecting amusing stories, he will show how one Pittsburgh neighborhood reflected national trends. Because many families in the Greater Pittsburgh Metropolitan area can trace their roots to the historic community of Lawrenceville, the lecture will also focus on available resources for genealogical research and address what the historic communities must do to preserve the records of the past. The presentation will trace the areas status from that of a struggling rural village of 200 people in 1826 to a metropolitan community of over 30,000 residents in 1900. While historical events will be mixed into the lecture, most of the talk will focus on how the English, Irish, Swedes, Germans, Polish, Solvenians and other ethnic groups built churches and fraternal organizations, and founded newspapers. Both the heyday of ethnicity prior to WW II and the subsequent decline of ethnic identification in more recent times will be discussed. Exhibits will supplement the presentation. Mr. Wudarczyk is author of the book PITTSBURGH'S FORGOTTEN ALLEGHENY ARSENAL, co-author of the book MONSTER ON THE ALLEGHENY AND OTHER LAWRENCEVILLE STORIES and author of the booklet HISTORICAL SITES AND LOST LANDMARKS OF LAWRENCEVILLE'S SIXTH WARD. Weymouth Rd. & Rt. 3 Is now private land and no longer maintainee as a cemetery...I've been uable to find out who owns it or whether any tombstones remain. Donna Gruber, a member of this list, found the cementery on an 1858 Medina map on the wall of the Medina County Historical Society. (Donna was one of the dedicated volunteers working on the GenWeb "lost cemeteries"project.) >From 1881 Medina chapter from an Ohio history published by Baskin & Battey, page 214. Indian Point was the burial site of early pioneers and prior to that apparently a fortification built by Mound Indians. The Indians built 3 mounds, apparently as fortification with adjacent trenches. Townsmen dug a road through the mounds to the point so they could transport the dead by wagon. The text says "Early settlers of the township thought this high point of land, this old fortification a super place for burying-ground, and it was used for this purpose for some years; a few of the brownstone slabs still stand reminders of the pioneer whites who dispossessed the red man of this territory which had once sported the semi-civilized Mound Builders. To get at this cemetery, a road was cut through the center of the three embankments."
