Although this is not directly related to genealogy, the fact that our libraries provide each of us with so much needs to be addressed. Please read the following and pass it on. It was sent by the Director of Public Libraries in Ohio... This is not just for Dayton/Montgomery County libraries, but ALL Ohio public libraries. Public libraries in Ohio are again facing major cuts in the state budget currently being debated in the Legislature. If passed, the Dayton Metro Library will lose an additional $950,000 in state support beginning next January. The cuts get worse in future years if the Legislature passes the Governor’s tax reform plans. Funding for Ohio public libraries has been reduced several times since 2001. The continued erosion of state funding threatens the library’s ability to provide the hours, books and services the community needs and voted to support in last year’s levy. Facts: * The Dayton Metro Library counts on state funding for 64% of its income. * Funding for Ohio public libraries has been reduced while state revenues have grown. * Tax reform as proposed by Governor Taft would reduce income tax rates, but would also reduce funding for libraries and other local services. * Tax reform would also mandate larger real estate tax levies in order to generate the same amount of income under current tax law. Public libraries are vital. They contribute to the state’s economic strength. Job hunters, students, schools, small businesses and senior citizens depend on library services. Libraries add to the quality of life of all citizens and build strong families and communities. Additional cuts in funding for libraries will reduce Ohio’s competitive edge. VOICE YOUR OPINION.
