This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Everett, Mitchell, Miller, Johnson, Gossard, Fisher, Watson, Helfenstine Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/GZB.2ACI/931.1 Message Board Post: I am a descendant of a Thomas Everett who appears to have resided in Jefferson Township, Madison County, Ohio in 1830 according to the Federal Census, and then in Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio in the years 1840 and 1850 (Federal Censuses). My great-grandfather, Joseph W. Everett, was the youngest son of this Thomas Everett and his wife Hannah Mitchell. Hannah is the name of his wife on the 1850 census. However, Thomas may have been married prior to his marriage to Hannah (I cannot ascertain this as I have not been able to get to Madison or Champaign counties to investigate further). Thomas Everett and his wife Hannah appear to have died sometime between 1850 and 1860, as the named children that are listed on the 1850 census are either living scattered among households in Madison County (how or if those households were related to either Thomas or his wife are also unknown at this point) or do not appear at all in the 1860 Federal Census. I believe this indicates some type of tragedy that befell the family forcing the children to be farmed-out to other households. My great-grandfather appears to have been the youngest surviving son of Thomas and Hannah Everett, as he was born in 1851. If this Thomas Everett is your "Thomas Everitt" that was married to Jane Sidener, they may have indeed had children together. There are 2 named children listed on the 1850 census that could be surviving children of your Jane Sidener - Edward age 17 and Elizabeth age 16. The next child listed is Louise and she is only 14 so if your Jane died in 1834, she would be the daughter from the following wife. In the 1830 census, the Thomas Everett household in Madison consisted of 3 males in household (1 under 5 years; 1 5-10 years; 1 30-40 years); 4 females in household (3 under 5 years of age; 1 30-40 years). I need to find the marriage date of my Hannah Mitchell and Thomas Everett though, as well as what occurred to disperse the children among so many families in Madison County. My main question is why were these children dispersed among families in Madison county rather than in Champaign county and all I can surmise from this was that perhaps these Madison families had ties to Hannah and Thomas (and now perhaps your Jane). The names of the families the children were farmed out to in Madison by the 1860 census are: Miller, Watson, Johnson, Fisher, Gossard, and Helfenstine. Maybe one of these family names will seem familiar to you. These families lived in Somerfield, Midway, Range and Stokes townships in Madison County. I hope this will be of some help to you. And if you should uncover any additional information that would indicate that your Thomas Everitt and my Thomas Everett are one and the same, I would be most gratefully appreciative. The 1850 census indicates that Thomas Everett was born in Delaware around 1801 but I have had no luck so far identifying his Everett family in Delaware at that time.
