Although this is not directly related to genealogy, the fact that our libraries provide each of us with so much needs to be addressed. Please read the following and pass it on. It was sent by the Director of Public Libraries in Ohio... This is not just for Dayton/Montgomery County libraries, but ALL Ohio public libraries. Public libraries in Ohio are again facing major cuts in the state budget currently being debated in the Legislature. If passed, the Dayton Metro Library will lose an additional $950,000 in state support beginning next January. The cuts get worse in future years if the Legislature passes the Governor’s tax reform plans. Funding for Ohio public libraries has been reduced several times since 2001. The continued erosion of state funding threatens the library’s ability to provide the hours, books and services the community needs and voted to support in last year’s levy. Facts: * The Dayton Metro Library counts on state funding for 64% of its income. * Funding for Ohio public libraries has been reduced while state revenues have grown. * Tax reform as proposed by Governor Taft would reduce income tax rates, but would also reduce funding for libraries and other local services. * Tax reform would also mandate larger real estate tax levies in order to generate the same amount of income under current tax law. Public libraries are vital. They contribute to the state’s economic strength. Job hunters, students, schools, small businesses and senior citizens depend on library services. Libraries add to the quality of life of all citizens and build strong families and communities. Additional cuts in funding for libraries will reduce Ohio’s competitive edge. VOICE YOUR OPINION. Share your thoughts about state funding for public libraries with your representatives in Columbus. The Ohio House intends to pass its version of the budget by April 14th. To voice your opinion, please go to: _http://www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/funding.cfm_ (http://www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/funding.cfm) PS: Feel free to forward this to others interested in libraries. This Myrtle is with parents John and Virginia, brothers Emery, Ernest, Charles, and Edward, and a sister Maud. Would this be the right Myrtle. If so, go to the web site Ohio Historical Society and click on Newspapers. Then into search by cities and click on Columbus. Then just click in July 1973, this brings up the Columbus Dispatch and the Citizen. You'll see where you can get this roll of microfilm through interlibrary loan. The SSDI just brings up her month and year, not the day of the month, and I can't bring her up for Ohio Deaths. So you'll of course need to look on the microfilm each day in July to find her obit. Other questions that I can help with, let me know.

I know she had a son named Joseph (Joe), that lived in Lawrence Co. Ky. and Paul sounds familiar too. Do you have any idea which newpaper in that area could possible have the obituary? I can check around on the net and look for some newspaper and libraries in the Columbus area, and maybe get lucky now with the correct death date. Myrtle was my grandmothers' sister. Thank you so much for this info. Clarice

Ida is my main concern, she married Alfred Hezekiah Fenner and is my grandmother. The 1880 census is the only one that I was able to locate John, there are numerous John Pennell's and not knowing his mother's name made it difficult. I don't know where Wilber is buried either. I know Wilber was alive in 1930 and living in Franklin Co. Ohio.Thank you for all you have done. Please feel free to e-mail me here- bskeener@nts-online.net -Thanks again, Susan

Genealogy Dept is in the basement of the library, so a volunteer has to be there at all times. It's usually only open about 4 hours a day. What I would do is call them on Monday when the director is there so she can make arrangements for you to be there longer hours. I'm sure that won't be any problem as many volunteers as they have, they are very helpful. Just call the library and ask for the Genealogy dept. Their hours are Monday - 11 to 4 Tuesday - 3 to 7:30 Wednesday - 11 to 4 Thursday 3 to 7:30 Friday - 11 to 4 Saturday - 10 to 2 Telephone number is 740-852-9543

The 1880 census has John's Mother Elizabeth living with him and Clara, and right next door is Evan Pennel just 6 years younger than John. Both say their parents were born in PA. Evan married Julia Akison in Madison Co in 1873. He died in 1928, Julia in 1921, buried together in the cem. I don't see Wilbur in any cemetery. I did find in Latter Day Saints where a Evan Pennell was born May 6, 1847 which ties in with the 1880 census, born in Columbus, parents were Lewis and Elizabeth Zemmons. I'm going into town pretty soon and will snoop around a little more for you.

I did come across that blurb about the brothers while doing some online research. I think I have pretty much exhausted all my options online. Do you have any suggestions as to where I could visit in order to obtain any more information? I live in Michigan so I thought I might come for a couple days and try to do some research at local/state libraries or historical societies. I know that they weren't required to keep birth records at that time, but I'm wondering if it is still possible to find records of this nature somewhere, perhaps church records? Thanks, Janell
