Posted on: Madison Co. Oh Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Madison?read=532 Surname: KENTON ------------------------- If you are searching for Simon Kenton , the frontiersman, I believe his bones have rested in Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana, OH since 1836. I'm not sure if he ever spent any time in Madison County. Mostly it was KY, & the Urbana-Springfield area.
My great grandfather, George William Armentrout, known as William Armentrout, was born December 15, 1858 to Elias Armentrout and Nancy (Bigelow) Armentrout. He committed suicide February 27, 1945 in the Madison County Home. I recently learned of this while doing family research. His wife, my great grandmother, was Melvina (Landis) Armentrout. She died August 4, 1938 in Madison County. I am hoping to learn something about my great grandfather and why he took his own life. He was in his 80's at the time. I would like to hear from relatives or anyone who knows anything about this family. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Karen Conley [email protected]
Hi Fellow Madison Co Researchers, Please stop by the Madison Press online and read about a "missing" cemetery. Perhaps you have someone buried there! (Story ran on April 7, 2000) http://www.madison-press.com/NF/omf/madison/news_lead_story.html?[rkey=0006007 +[cr=gdn
Posted on: Madison Co. Oh Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Madison?read=531 Surname: Osborn, Lee, Springer, Richards ------------------------- Hi, I posted a note in response to your query on the Madison County list. I realized later that I forgot to add two more children for Simon & Mary Kenton, one was Benjamin (looks like Mary got her way this time) and the other was Nancy. I reread a little to refresh my memory. Simon Jr. married Martha Dowden. Wm. married Mary Cleland. Martha was the daughter of Mary Cleland's sister and Thomas Dowden. After Martha's death, Simon married her cousin, Elizabeth Jarboe, whose mother was a sister to Mary Cleland Kenton. There is so much information in this book that I would have to reread the whole th ing to get it all. Meantime: If you come across information regarding the Osborn's (any spelling), Lees, Richards or Springers in Madison County, please let me know. Good luck, P.S. I will also post this on the Madison Co., List

Posted on: Madison Co. Oh Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Madison?read=527 Surname: OSBORN, SPRINGER, RICHARDS, LEE ------------------------- I can't be certain this Simon Kenton is the one from Madison County, but the book, The Frontiersmen, by Allan Eckhart, gives the following information: Simon's father was Mark KENTON. Mark was born in County Down, Ireland 1 March 1701.The date of immigration is not stated. When his period of indenture (5 years) was over he became a tennent farmer on the Carter Grant, near Hopewell (Prince William Co.,VA?) It was there he met Mary MILLER. They were married in January of 1737 when Mary was 23 years old. William was born about 10 months after their marriage. He was followed by Mary 1739, Jane 1742, Frances 1744, Mark about 1749, John about 1751 and Simon (Mary wanted to name him Benjamin)in April of 1755. The book also gives an account of why for a time Simon changed his name to Simon BUTLER. It follows through with a lot more family information as well as Simon's friendship with Simon Girty. While the book might be classified as historical fiction, the author has done a extensive research with a lot of source notes included/ . As a huge Eckert fan, I would recommed it, even if you are not researching the Kenton family. I hope this helps Evelyn
Posted on: Madison Co. Oh Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Madison?read=522 Surname: Flanagan ------------------------- JR, Your Flanagans do not match up with mine. Very close however. I was aware there was another Mary A. Flanagan from West Jefferson. I have run across her name on my trips back to London, Ohio doing research in the library. My great grandmother was also a Mary A. Flanagan. However, she married James McLaughlin in 1875. Her siblings were Edward, John, Rose, and Annie. My Mary Flanagan was also born in New York - Staten Island. Her parents were Edward II and Rose Elizabeth Kearney Flanagan. Her grandparents were Edward and Mary McGahee Flanagan. So, I guess this invalidates a connection. I wish you the best in your research. I'll certainly keep you in mind if I run across anything in my research that I think would be of interest to you. Good luck! Tim
Posted on: Madison Co. Oh Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Madison?read=521 Surname: Williams, Heath, Straley, Gilliland, Lambert ------------------------- I'm sorry, I thought I had updated this. When I got hold of the Obituary, it turns out his name was Richard F. Williams; he married Sarah Sells in Columbus in 1857, she died in 1861 and he remarried Adline Straley in Sedelia (Madison County) in 1866. I have a suspicion that these two (Richard and Albert) may have been related; but who knows, there are LOTS of Williams in Ohio that predate Richard (he arrived in the US from Wales in 1840 at age 7, and came to Ohio about 2 years later.) I have no information on his parents or siblings names, but do know that his parents came to America and to Ohio with him, settling in Radnor in Delaware County. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help. Let me know if any of this ties into any facts you have on your Williams' line. Thanks felicia

Flanagan of County Rosscommon, Ireland b. 24 June 1830. John's obit purported him to be one of the original members of Tammany Hall in New York City, but tired of rough and tumble politics, he moved to Madison County and became a gentleman farmer in 1868. He was married in Princeton, N.J. (28 May 1855) to one Mary Maloney of Galway, Ireland. Their offspring were Kate, Anna, John, Berney, James F and my great grandmother Mary Alice, who married Sylvester Wesley Durflinger and had two daughters, Florence and Lillian (1883) and one son, Clarence. Lillian married Frank Conway and had three sons, James Richard, 1914, Robert Wesley, 1917 and John Philip,1921. Only Philip is still with us. Florence married Richard Logan of Toledo, Ohio and had one son Richard, Jr. Clarence died with no issue. That's not much but maybe it will help. Would appreciate any info you have that might validate or invalidate any of this.
