    3. I began with only ordering the pension files for my ancestors, but now I'm going back and ordering the military service records. The service record I received last week of my 2nd great-grandfather contained his birth date and birth place which the pension file did not and also gave a physical description of him (I just had a birth year from his tombstone). It also mentioned the name of his guardian. I had not been able to place him in the 1850 census, but with this new info, I located him in his county of birth and now have his possible mother and siblings to research and will be checking on a guardianship record for him to confirm his father. My motto is you can never have too much information on an ancestor.
