Hi All, I have a bed that used to be in my grandparents house. This bed has the old metal springs instead of the new type box spring. What I need to know is, can I buy a normal mattress for this bed? The mattress that is on it is in bad shape and I really need to get a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.. Jane Hoholski
Yes, you can use a regular mattress with excellent results. I bought one 6 or 7 years ago to use on my Grandmother's old tubular steel bed (from about 1925-30) and it's great. We had the bed and springs sandblasted and painted by a local company. They (and the mattress people) discouraged us from using the old springs and gave various reasons, but I had it done anyway. The grey paint they used on the springs make it look like the original metal. I bought a light weight mattress cover for the springs to enclose them and keep from having to dust the springs! I love seeing my granddaughter jump and bounce on the bed just like my sister and I did many years ago! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane" <jhoho@lorainccc.edu> To: <OHLORAIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2001 9:38 AM Subject: [OHLORAIN] antique bedspring question Hi All, I have a bed that used to be in my grandparents house.
