Dear Subscribers, The current ROLL CALL has got all of you paying very close attention. So please stick with me, I'm going to jump up on my soap box for a moment. There are currently over 300 subscribers to this Lorain County list. I do wonder what percentage of those 300 plus are also members of a Lorain County genealogy group? Did you know that there are currently four active genealogy groups in this county? Of course that doesn't include the many of the county's historical societies who also try to deal with genealogy requests. Even though those of us who are online can (very quickly & usually free) access a lot of data, the local groups still need our support via memberships. These local groups cannot exist without dues paying members. Next month, many of us will be getting the usual dues reminders in the mail. This prompts me to personally encourage you to consider (if you haven't done so already) to support one or more local genealogy groups somewhere. I am NOT an officer nor do I have any Ohio roots, but this is where I try to do my part. Thanks for listening. What is your opinion on this? Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH
Hi, Internet Genealogists, I agree wholeheartedly with Nancy. Everyone should support the group which is in the area they are searching. A lot of the local groups are having problems and lack of support because so many are using the Internet (which certainly has it's place.) But the local groups are the ones who do all the work and publish records, cemeteries, etc. for our use. Even if we live afar, the least we can do is join the local society. It is because of these groups that Ohio is such a great place for researching our ancestors. The Lorain Chapter, OGS puts out a terrific newsletter 4 times a year with material which will not be found anywhere else. I am also on this soapbox!
