In general, I would save my money and not get certified copies of certificates for genealogy documentation unless you do not have a choice. An exception would be if a society you were trying to join asked for certified copies. Some States such as NY only give uncertified certificates for genealogy purposes (the information is the same except it does not have the seal). You would want certified copies for legal purposes such as proving a death to get an inheritance, proving a birth for purposes of social security eligibility, etc. Margaret Scheffler ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sheila and Dave C." <grami948@yahoo.com> To: <OHLORAIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 06, 2001 2:56 PM Subject: [OHLORAIN] Birth Cert Questions > Received word via mail today that one of the birth > certs/records I requested was found. Sheila, You've had good answers to your questions. I just want to clarify a couple of points. There is no difference between a certified and an uncertified copy of a certificate. They are identical except for the official seal (and cost <g>) A check for payment would take much longer because it would have to clear you bank before they fill your request. A money order would be more expedient. Sue -- Sue Strick, Lorain County Coordinator for OHGenWeb Lorain County Genealogy Page, http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen L.C.
