what I would do if you want to preserve the bed is get a large bedboard cut to lay over the springs-fit it so it is held solid by rails, then put boxspring and mattress on top. Bed may be a bit high but much better for yur back. we had to do this when living in Italy one year and the board was just plywood and worked wonderfully. Mary
