Hi All, I am in need of more help. I submitted a picture to the Ancestral Images of Lorain Co. site. Amy has loaded the picture in as of yesterday. I am hoping that someone can at least give me some clues about it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohlorain/pictures/New2001.htm go to the Unidentified Girls in Uniform photo. The picture is of 8 girls in some sort of uniform. I don't know if it is a sport uniform or maybe a school uniform. I believe the picture to have been taken sometime in the later 1910's. I have no idea what school they would have attended. It could have been Lorain High or maybe a catholic school. I have been to the Black River Historical Society and searched there with no luck. I believe that one of the girls would be my husband's grandmother Mary Agnes Kozar. My husband never met her because she died at the age of 36 in 1943 from Berrilym disease. My father-in-law passed away in 1985 before I started my quest, so I don't have any clues that way either. Would appreciate any help or clues... Thank you... Jane (Spurlock) Hoholski
Jane, This sure looks like a school picture. You might try looking through the Lorain Hi Scimitar for around 1910. These are in the Special Collection room at the Lorain Public Library. What about some sort of scouts or explorers uniforms? I don't have a clue when the Girl Scouts began (and I used to be one... !) but the kerchiefs made me think of that. Or what about a boating club or something?... They look sort of sailor-ish... Those are all the ideas I had. Anna Hanson Jane wrote: > Hi All, > > I am in need of more help. I was wondering if there was a definitive answer to Jane's query (see below). I remember seeing guesses, but nothing definite and I'm still curious! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane" <jhoho@lorainccc.edu> To: <OHLORAIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2001 3:07 PM Subject: [OHLORAIN] more help needed Hi All, I am in need of more help. Hi, Well, I can tell you that I had these ideas given to me as to what the outfits might have been: Cheerleader uniform Tap Dancer uniform Basketball uniform Volleyball uniform ROTC Club - Naby Sea Cadets School Uniforms.... Other than that, I still do not know for sure what the clothes represented or for sure who was in the picture. Still researching... Thanks for bringing it up again. Jane (Spurlock) Hoholski
Jane; They could be a singing or stage group, the dress looks like early beach atiar. The markings on the one shoulder is a stewards (officers servant) rating. Hello, The girls in your photo are wearing uniforms with United States Navy insignia patches on the left sleeve on some of the uniforms<----U.S.Navy also, they may have been WAVES-(Women Appointed got Volunteer Emergency Service). The girl in the front row, (middle) as well as the one in the top row, (2nd one in from right side) have United States Navy Second Class Petty Officer. This is an Enlisted Seaman, not an Officer. A 2nd Class Petty Officer is considered an E-5 in the Enlisted ranks. I can't tell their "jobs" due to the fact that I can't clearly see the emblem located under the eagle (top of patch) and above the chevrons (v-shaped on bottom of patch). As it is, I may be incorrect on the "class" of Petty Officer (hard to tell in the photo posted), 1-chevron = 3rd Class, 2-chevrons = 2nd Class, 3-chevrons = 1st Class Petty Officer (no, these aren't backwards) If you can blow up the scan I can help you further.
