I know this is not gen related but thought I could add to the Hurrican info. There are many sources of information...re mississippi, at least sunherald.com eyesonkatrina.com (the local neswpaper's blog) Wlox tv website...with links to search for survivors. My daughter Skye, son-in-law Chris, and baby granddaughter, Jordan, live in Long Beach Ms (between Pass Christiane & Gulfport) where he is a CB with the US Navy. He has just returned from 6 months duty in Spain...what a homecoming. Resource wise, they left with few provision, no check book and his first paycheck stateside had not yet arrived. They headed north and east to Alabama and are staying in a hotel in a little town called Grove Hill Alabama. My kids are among some 100+ Mississippi refugees staying at the the Windwood Inn. A freeway bypassed Green Hill some years ago and I understand that there's not much there. However, the towns people are doing more than I'd ever expect. The Baptist church paid for 2 my kids first 2 nights; the pubisher of the local newspaper paid for 2 additional nights and treated them to dinner at the local diner. The Baptist Church threw a "social" for the refugees so that they could get aquainted with the townspeople and with each other. A local couple made friends with my kids and offered them the use of there washing machine today so finally, they have clean clothes. Chris is hoping to drive back to Long Beach tomorrow to see if their new home is still standing and if their pets are still alive. From the news reports, we know that the town of Long Beach Ms was flattened from the Ocean northward to the railroad tracks. However, my kids live abt 3 miles north of the tracks so we're still holding out hope that their 4 bedroom brick home is still standing... Please hold good thoughts for us.
