The Lorain County Reporter, September 1898, ..............BREAKS THE RECORD........... The Elyria Stone Co., Mr. Charles T. Ely, manager, has again broken the record for raising large stone from their quarry hole at Grafton. A bridge is being built at Edgewater Park, Cleveland, and the con- tractor was obliged to furnish four cap stones for the four corners of tremendous size. He took the job on the supposition that he quarried and supplied the demand and consequently he would be released from his obligation. The county commissioners finally heard of the fame of the Grafton quarry. Each stone occupied 345 cubic feet and weighed 27 ton. No car could be found on the Big Four that would hold the stone but finally the Lake Shore Road furnished one and the stones were delivered one at a time. It will cost the contractor several hundred dollars to furnish machinery to handle the stones. --------------------------------------------------------------- Nancy M.
