Hi Nancy, Its very discouraging. I have my blocked senders list full of names and they just keep coming. Its great to be able to delete them but I am thinking that my delete key will certainly wear out long before the rest of the computer does! As for the Conf. I will be attending, as a vendor representing the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research. Should be interesting! Morning Listers, When I turned on the computer early this Saturday AM, I had to wade (& delete) thru 28 messages before I got to even the very first one concerning genealogy. Discouraging isn't it? The next dozen or so were genealogy related. Thank goodness. Anyone on this list attending the annual OGS conference this year? The well known CYNDI will be there. Have seen and heard her before. Go to the OGS link below and click on the side bar "conference" link. -- Nancy M. Although, this is not genealogy, I offer the following, as a way of cutting down on SPAM. 1. In my experience the most effective way to cut down on SPAM is convincing one's good friends and relatives from sending on those chain type letters with the sentimental stories, poems, that some people find touching. Some of those "communications" have some 500 or more working email addresses attached to them. They must be a spammers delight! If one MUST pass on some of that "stuff", cut and paste the message into a new message with only one or two email addresses. When someone asks me if I received some of that material, I kindly reply that I delete it all without opening so as not to perpetuate spam. Most of my friends, over a year or two have taken the hint, and no longer send it to me. They are still my friends too <g> 2. NEVER respond to be taken off a spammers list -- you have just told them you have a good email address. 3. Contact your ISP -- some of them have spam blockers, and some of the ISPs have a place where you can forward on the spam, which can in the long run keep the amount any one user receives. To make those services work, we users need to take the time to forward on the spam messages to the appropriate places. Of course the spammers are clever, and find new addresses to use so one will never be entirely free of the spam. 4. Put a firewall such as the free "Zone Alarm" on your computer so that no one can break into your computer and use it as a server to send out viruses and spam to others. Along with your up to date virus program, Zone Alarm and your virus program will keep you computer free of viruses. I have had a new ISP (Time Warner cable provider) for about 4 months now, but have kept my old ISP I had for about 4 years so I won't lose genealogy contacts. I am getting almost NO spam from the cable modem account from which I post frequently to rootsweb lists, but when I check the old ISP most of the messages are spam. It is my OPINION that my #1 point above is the primary reason for not quickly recreating the volume of spam. I hope this helps Nancy and Karen and others of you responding to her message. Anybody come across anything new on CARPENTER and DAILY families in the Avon, Lorain Co. area in the 1800a. I am willing to share what I know on these families.
